I read a review of the show in today's newspaper and the reviewer was praising it to the sky. He said it was very much music rather than celebrity oriented and that it really showcased the participants love of music.

Well.... I am treated to John Cougar Melloncamp (spg?) at the present. This is becoming one of the most amazing TV music programs ever! Elvis is an amazing host... hey, if she married him, he must be quite the lad? >;-)

He hasn't used "Cougar" in decades. His record company stuck that in against his will.

What program is this you're talking about?

Spectacle with Elvis Costello. It's on ATV.... locally... it's CTV... I asked in a post for a clone to fix the title back on April 3 but that did not happen.

Cougar.... Yeah... but some of us still know the name, eh?

June Carter... a one!

What a great show about the tunes!
It's fixed now (I hope). ~Mod

Off the subject but in my limited genealogical research I find Costello as an Irish name..I always assumed it was Italian and it could be both, but it is found ont he Dingle peninsula. mg

In Oz we have had this show on ABC-TV for the last couple of weeks. The first one I saw was Lou Reed, and this week it was Sting and The Police. It's interesting when Elvis and the artist discuss a song and either or both get the guitar and sing a few phrases to illustrate what they are talking about.

On this week's show Elvis & Sting sang an Elizabethan song by John Dowland, with Sting playing the lute, à la Sting's Songs from the Labyrinth project. At the end of the show the band, Police, and Sting and Elvis sang a medley version of Elvis's song Watching the Detectives and one of the Police songs - title escapes me - and at one stage one of them was singing the chorus of one song while the band was playing the other song. Worked well.

In Oz the show is on ABC2 at 8.30pm Fridays and repeated on ABC1 at 11.30pm Thursdays.

Helen

Hi mg,

Elvis Costello is a stage name -- his given name is Declan McManus, I believe.

I must admit that this show has opened up a whole new world of music for me. Most of my life I've listened to nothing but folk. I've nothing against other kinds of music, of course, but when I sit down and relax with some music its always been folk. As I get older I've found out that there is all kinds of beautiful music out there as this show has pointed out to me.

Indeed... the genius of the show seems to be it's in depth investigation of the hearts and souls and circumstances in such a professional and personal manner, aside from displaying the music itself. No "bubblegum" here.

Case in point... Bill Clinton in a couple of hours... now tell me this ain't one of the most amazing TV shows about music ever!

Beer just sent me a YT link with Jessie Winchester singing on Spectacle. I saw the show on the weekend. It was top notch.

Here's a link to Spectacle if you want to see what's coming up.

Here's the link Beer sent me. There are other songs from the program too.

Jesse's song is very touching, so much so that it brings tears to Neko Case's eyes. I saw Jesse perform it this past summer at Adrien's festival and I had to get the CD just for it (the other tunes ain't too shabby either). The comments at the YouTube link demonstrate the power of song to move people and are also revealing of the fact that many had not heard of Jesse before this appearance.

In my approximate 10 minutes I spent with him I left as if I had been speaking to some guru. I remember very little of the festival due to the constant energy being spent on making sure everyone is happy and finding immediate solution to unexpected situations. But Jessie I found to be so humbling that he will remain very very special to me.
