Subject: RE: Village Music Project: More tunes online From: johnadams Date: 06 Apr 09 - 07:09 AM Thanks for that, Chris. It never occurred to me that the B: field would cause a problem. The hyphens for slurs should have been picked up by BarFly - it picked up lots which I corrected. The mishit bar lines are something to look out for in the future because it's likely to be a regular problem. As to running it through a PC, I'll leave that to someone who owns one. I did upload the code, harvest it and error check it after it had been on the site but nothing significant had happened to it as far as my abc package was concerned. It's a jungle in abc land - lots of lurking horrors! :-) |
Subject: RE: Village Music Project: More tunes online From: GUEST,ChrisP Date: 06 Apr 09 - 06:04 AM Hi Johnny, I think you've made the lines too long and the file has been word-wrapped. Specifically the B: field wraps round in every tune, and means the next line starts without a field letter (in this case it should be another B:), which some programs maybe can't cope with before the K: field. It may be no coincidence that line 6 in every tune is the B: field! It has also happened in some of the tune lines, leaving partial bars orphaned. The hyphens for slurs should be brackets. The random backslashes would appear to be mis-hits for barlines. Maybe to overcome the line ending problems you need to run the files into a PC, perhaps then universal line endings will be inserted? |

I spent hours on cleaning this code (which was done originally by Andrew Kuntz of the Fiddler's Companion so many thanks to him). It eventually passed every Barfly test and Phil reckons that his Barfly programme follows all the abc rules It also went back and forth between Barfly and a text editor and I thought that all incidences of bad line feeds and maverick characters had been netted. Obviously not. I'm starting to think that all of our files need two versions - one for Navigator on the PC and one for Barfly on the Mac. It would save a lot of effort in the long run. |

Subject: RE: Village Music Project: More tunes online From: treewind Date: 05 Apr 09 - 12:26 PM I think Barfly put Mac-style line endings on (CR instead of CRLF or LF) There are some other problems too - '\' in unexpected places, and smart quote characters that may or may not be acceptable (difficult to tell - abcm2ps blows up at line 6 for no apparent good reason...) Subject: Village Music Project: More tunes online From: johnadams Date: 05 Apr 09 - 11:50 AM Volume 4 of Thompson's Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances is now available as a pdf download at the Village Music Project site. Also Volume 2 is now there in abc format for those who prefer. Let me know if there are any problems with the abc. I think I caught most of them using BarFly. Thompson's 200 Country Dance Tunes Volume 2 in abc Published collections page. |
