Subject: RE: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: Eve Goldberg Date: 14 Apr 09 - 06:54 PM Why, you are quite welcome. It wasn't that hard since the info is out there to be had pretty easily. If I get a chance, I will try to find some info on other festivals across Canada. |
Subject: RE: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: Rasener Date: 14 Apr 09 - 03:14 PM I would like to thank Eve for digging up the info on a lot of festivals and providing them in a way that I was able to put into the table. Les |
Subject: RE: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: Eve Goldberg Date: 14 Apr 09 - 11:27 AM Hi all, I just added a bunch of information about Ontario Festivals, and I thought I'd chime in here to say that while I take Marion's point about folk scenes in different parts of the country, I think there is a lot of usefulness in the listings, for a few reasons: 1) Having a listing of festivals would be interesting and useful, and there are a few places you can get a lot of that information quickly (like I just did with the Ontario festivals. 2) There are Canadian Mudcatters on here who are performers, and it might be of interest to other Canadian Mudcatters where they are going to be. There are also Mudcatters who organize events, and similarly I think it's nice to share the information about who's up to what. 3) People travel, and sometimes they want to know what's going on in another part of the country. People definitely travel long distances for festivals, but also, if I'm going to be in Vancouver for a week, I might like to know what's happening folk-wise while I'm there. I say, let's try it and see if people find it useful or interesting. |
Subject: RE: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: Rasener Date: 12 Apr 09 - 06:07 PM Marion LOL I am hoping I get a sellout for Tanglefoot, otherwise I will send them back to you in a coffin :-) LOL I take your points on Board. >>If you were to do the research yourself to compile a master listing of Canadian gigs - that would be an overwhelming amount of work. And if you were to depend on Mudcatters to send you events to list, the results wouldn't be at all comprehensive, and thus not a particularly useful reference.<< Agreed >>I see that the UK What's On thread is a lot more developed than the USA one, which makes sense to me; in a small country, people are more likely to think of the people in other cities as part of the same folk community and to contemplate traveling to the far end of the country to hear a good concert. In a big country, that's just not realistic.<< Agreed >>For me in Toronto, for example, the folk scenes in Winnipeg or Vancouver or Halifax are just as remote for me as if they were in other countries. Even if somebody did take on the project of making a big list of Canadian gigs, I wouldn't be likely to go through it looking for something to do; I'd look at my local resources (e.g., websites of folk clubs) to see what's on locally.<< That the whole point. I can just do a table of local folk clubs with a link to them. However I am not familiar with your area, so people like yourself would need to feed that to me. Remember that mudcatters may be in your area and would love to know whats on in the area. Your help or other mudcatters help would be invaluable. >>In terms of Mudcat permathreads, I think a more practical option would be to have separate threads for provinces or cities. Or, rather than attempting to list individual concerts, create a list of ongoing things like sessions and song circles - this would be a more reasonably sized project because there aren't as many of them and they're not continually changing.<< I have tables for sessions and singarounds, so great get the data to me. >>Another thing I'd suggest would be to ask the American Mudcatters how many of them are really using the US permathread to find events to go to. If it isn't useful for the Americans, it probably wouldn't be very useful for Canadians.<< I will leave that up to the Americans to decide. I amdoing it for Joe for USA mudcatters. >>My feeling is that the most effective way to use Mudcat to promote individual gigs is to start a regular thread for the gig with the date and place in the title. << No problem in doing that as well. I do it for my club in the UK :-) I personally think it would be much better if we had a volunteer in Canada who knows the scene to handle the thread. Any volunteers. I would be able to show whoever it was, how to do it, but they would need decent Spreadsheet knowledge and the ability to get that info into the thread using HTML. I could teach themand of course Joe Offer. Any offers other than Joe Offer :-) best wishes |

Subject: RE: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: Marion Date: 12 Apr 09 - 05:36 PM Hello Villan. I appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to include us Canadians in the "diary" project. But, I'm a little skeptical about whether it would make sense for us - i.e., whether the benefits would be worth the effort. If you were to do the research yourself to compile a master listing of Canadian gigs - that would be an overwhelming amount of work. And if you were to depend on Mudcatters to send you events to list, the results wouldn't be at all comprehensive, and thus not a particularly useful reference. I see that the UK What's On thread is a lot more developed than the USA one, which makes sense to me; in a small country, people are more likely to think of the people in other cities as part of the same folk community and to contemplate traveling to the far end of the country to hear a good concert. In a big country, that's just not realistic. For me in Toronto, for example, the folk scenes in Winnipeg or Vancouver or Halifax are just as remote for me as if they were in other countries. Even if somebody did take on the project of making a big list of Canadian gigs, I wouldn't be likely to go through it looking for something to do; I'd look at my local resources (e.g., websites of folk clubs) to see what's on locally. In terms of Mudcat permathreads, I think a more practical option would be to have separate threads for provinces or cities. If it isn't useful for the Americans, it probably wouldn't be very useful for Canadians. My feeling is that the most effective way to use Mudcat to promote individual gigs is to start a regular thread for the gig with the date and place in the title. Take care, Marion my website |
Subject: RE: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: Rasener Date: 12 Apr 09 - 03:45 PM Thanks and no problem. As sson as I get the OK from Joe that I can edit the thread we will get going. :-) Just to use the above example of how not to do it. If all you do is put a link, I won't be going and finding the info. You have to give me the data in a way that will go straight into the diaries. Just as I indicated in my previous post above Subject: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: The Villan - PM Date: 11 Apr 09 - 06:26 PM So have a look at that post. Les |
Subject: RE: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: meself Date: 12 Apr 09 - 01:41 PM Yup - much appreciated. |
Subject: RE: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: gnu Date: 12 Apr 09 - 01:36 PM Ditto what Terry said. Thanks Les! |
Subject: RE: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: meself Date: 12 Apr 09 - 01:28 PM There are five or six of the major Canadian festivals listed there (Dirty Linen) - and a fiddle camp; the rest is American. |
Subject: RE: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: Fidjit Date: 12 Apr 09 - 01:17 PM Les This should help you. Dirty Linen Chas |
Subject: RE: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: Rasener Date: 12 Apr 09 - 05:10 AM Eve As I said, as long as people feed me the details correctly and don't expect me to go searching for it. :-) I will get Joe to set up a Perma thread called CANADA What's On And Where - Folk Music Les |
Subject: RE: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: Eve Goldberg Date: 11 Apr 09 - 11:57 PM I think it would be great to have, if you are willing to put in the work! |

Subject: Canada - Diary like UK and USA From: Rasener Date: 11 Apr 09 - 06:26 PM I am prepared to build up a diary like the ones that are now installed for the Uk and USA for Mudcat. The only thing that I do not have, is the knowledge of Canadian folk music and where to find venues, gigs etc. I need people to give me the information in a way that I can copy and paste so that any errors are not mine. Please look at the UK or USA ones and you will see roughly what I need. Please don't feed me a long story. I need the relevant info for each field heading. Such as Saturday June 27th Faldingworth Live, Faldingworth Memorial Hall, Faldingworth,Lincolnshire LN8 3SE Tanglefoot No Support Act Doors open 7:15pm for 8:00pm start Website http://www.faldingworthlive.co.uk :-) I am pleased to say that I have the pleasure of putting them on as above. There you go, I am supporting Canada :-) If there is enough interest, I will get Joe to create a Perma Thread which I will moderate. Remember I don't know your scene or geography, so thats your job to provide clear and understandable information. Cheers Les Worrall |
