Subject: Lyr Req: Love love love (Look what its done for m From: GUEST,Steve g Date: 13 Apr 09 - 08:03 AM DEsperate for lyrics to a Cosmotheka song. The first verse is something like; Love love love, look what its done for me I eat no breakfast I eat no dinner and every day I get thinner and thinner Waste not want not, but I'm wasting every day Wasting my money and wasting my time till I wasted myself away. Can anyone help with the rest? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Love love love (Look what its done for m From: gnomad Date: 13 Apr 09 - 08:38 AM You might try lyrics for Ernie Mayne, from whose recording the Sealeys got it. As Cosmotheka they recorded it on "You only had to ask!" Folk Sound Records FSCD55, but I have a feeling that disc is no longer available though only about 7 years old. 2nd hand market maybe? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Love love love (Look what its done fo From: Bainbo Date: 13 Apr 09 - 09:18 AM Can't remember the verses, but I do remember the words they used to sing at the same time as the ones you've quoted above, as a counterpoint: "Love, in other words an intimate affection for a member of the opposite persuasion, scrutinise the awful havoc it has wrought in me; My matutinal repast is ended, as for dinner it is scornfully rejected Every day I'm more emaciated, more debilitated and more dolefully dejected Waste not and you will never come to want and yet in spite of this instructive little motto, anyone can see that I am wasting every day I'm wasting all my money, wasting all my time and wasting evrything that I possess until it's absolutely certain I shall waste myself away." (It helps if you have the ability to sing without breathing!) I remember dear Al Sealey - who didn't exactly look like he was "wasting away" - used to get to the line about "every day I get thinner and thinner", then he'd pause, fix his eye on someone in the audience and scowl: "I can lip-read, and that was very 'urtful." I saw Dave Sealey, just a couple of days ago, doing a show about Max Miller. If I'd known this was going to come up, I could have asked him then! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Love love love (Look what its done for m From: GUEST,Steve g Date: 13 Apr 09 - 09:57 AM Cripes! Pretty impressive that you can remember that! Been searching everywhere for the rest bof the words, but no luck so far. I still see Dave occasionally, sad loss to the music world when Al passed away. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Love love love (Look what its done for m From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 Apr 09 - 02:31 PM Found in a blog: "Now once for my breakfast I could eat fifty eggs Now I can't go forty-nine of them I had muscles hard, like slabs of lard But alas now I can't see a sign of 'em (alas alas) I got so thin that the suits that I wear Fit me nowhere and I don't think it's fair She don't seem to care if to nothing I shrink I'm afraid to wash now (you can guess this one) Lest I slip down the sink...." * I know Cosmotheka was famous for reviving old music-hall songs. Was this an old music-hall song? If so, does anybody know wrote it, or who performed it originally, or anything else about the song? If it IS a music-hall song, I might be able to find the sheet-music, if I had more to go on. |
Subject: Lyr Add: LOVE LOVE LOVE (Andrew B Sterling, 1906) From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Apr 09 - 01:01 PM I've been looking for songs titled LOVE LOVE LOVE, and I was surprised how many there are. I will post the ones I have found, despite the fact that they are not the one requested, just so we can eliminate them, and so they will be available here in the future in case anyone looks for them. From the sheet music at The Archive of Popular American Music: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Andrew B. Sterling New York: Century Music Pub. Co., 1906. 1. There's a magic word you have often heard And it makes your heart beat fast; It stirs your soul, it will grieve, console, Tho' we can't tell how long it will last. The bee and the flow'r have felt its pow'r, The birds up in the trees Sing its glad refrain to the tender strain That is lent by the summer breeze. CHORUS: The sweetest word you ever heard is Love, Love, Love. It comes to us all, the great and the small, does Love, Love, Love; It makes our lives worth living, This gift from heav'n above, The whole world is ringing, the whole world is singing of Love, Love, Love. 2. Ev'ry girl and boy, all have felt its joy, For without it none could live; When earth seems dark, then its tender spark Unto you brightest sunshine will give. 'Tis dearer than gold, it can't be sold, For wealth could never buy. From a faithful heart it will ne'er depart, But will live on and never die. |
Subject: Lyr Add: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE (A Ross & F Tours, 1909) From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Apr 09 - 01:02 PM From the sheet music at Mississippi State University: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Words, Adrian Ross. Music, Frank E. Tours New York: T. B. Harms & Francis, Day & Hunter, 1909. 1. I have been ever a queen, and the men are slaves before me. Just a chance word or a glance, and the best of them all adore me! If I but smile, once in a while, someone in haste discovers He is my Love, favored above all of the rest of my lovers! CHORUS: Love, Love, you are my throne And my royal crown; You I long for alone Till my sun goes down; Give me all you can give, There is naught above Love is the rose of the world, and I live For Love, Love, Love! 2. Young or old, ardent or cold, not a man of them can resist me. Each would pay millions to say that he conquered my heart and kissed me. If I've a mind, I may be kind, smile on him as a brother; Then I may soon change like the moon, leave him and look for another! |
Subject: Lyr Add: LOVE LOVE LOVE (Victor H Smalley, 1910?) From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Apr 09 - 01:04 PM From the sheet music at Indiana University: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE* Victor H. Smalley New Orleans: Victor H. Smalley, Orpheum Theatre, 1910? "Dedicated to the Jacobs Candy Company of New Orleans" 1. You may sing about the dear old moon, And a banjo and a love-sick coon, Or a cottage built for two, With Mabel, Maud or Sue. They sing them morning, night and noon. But what's the use of wasting words, On a shady nook and stars and birds? Ev'ry girlie that you meet Much prefers a Jacobs sweet. There's bliss in ev'ry Jacobs candy kiss. CHORUS: Love, love, love; There is nothing so entrancing As love, love, love. It sets the world a-dancing. A maiden with a tender light Of love in eyes that shine so bright, And a box of Jacobs made last night, That's love, love, love. 2. When a boy, I went to Sunday school. Teacher told me of a good old rule. She told me it was right To love ev'ry one in sight. I did it 'cause I was no fool. So while other fellows softly sing Of a preacher and a wedding ring, From this song just take your cue: Send her up a box or two Of Jacobs' candy made for her last night. [*LOVE, LOVE, LOVE is the title of the first page of music. The title on the cover is THAT'S LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!] |

Sexton, 1913. 1. What is it makes the diff'rence 'twixt an old maid and a wife? Love! Love! Love! What is it makes the lucky man so happy all his life? Love! Love! Love! Why does a rich girl leave her home and live in poverty? Love! Love! Love! What is there to the leading man that is no novelty? Love! Love! Love! CHORUS: Love! Love! Love! Love! Nothing in this world but true love. Rich man, poor man, beggar man thief, Doctor, lawyer merchant chief, Because it's love! Love! Love! Love! Love that makes the world go round. If you want to know the reason Whether in or out of season, Well, it's love! Love! Love! 2. What is it causes gladness when he whispers soft and low? Love! Love! Love! What is it causes sadness when it's time for him to go? Love! Love! Love! Why is it you feel badly when he has to be away? Love! Love! Love! Why is it you would like to have him always with you stay? Love! Love! Love! Because it's...CHORUS |

Subject: Lyr Add: LOVE LOVE LOVE (Gerard Carbonara, 1919) From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Apr 09 - 01:09 PM From the sheet music at Indiana University: LOVE LOVE LOVE Words and music by Gerard Carbonara New York: G. Carbonara, 1919. "As sung in D. W. Griffith's spectacular romance, 'The Fall of Babylon'" 1. You're fair to me and enchanting. Red lipped soft skinned are you. Visions of sun-kissed mornings To live and laugh with you. Limpid pools are your eyes, Rivaling blue of the skies. Fair maid oh! what a prize For all life through. CHORUS 1. Love, love, love, 'Tis mightier than kings. Yet love grief sadness sometimes brings Like summer rain Refreshes all again The only thing in life Is love, love, love. 2. From out of my mountain fastness, Where sheep and goats abound. Longing I've gazed o'er the city For there my love I found. His is a kingly state. Mighty magnificent great. Heart throbs caresses kisses and smiles Lotion divine That heals this breast of mine Oh! what an endless joy Is love, love, love. |

Subject: Lyr Add: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE (Ernie Mayne/Cosmotheka) From: cptsnapper Date: 20 Apr 09 - 05:14 AM As requested, the verses taken from Cosmotheka's "A Good Turn Out": LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Ernie Mayne 1. I am a man who is deeply in love, Deeply in love, there's no doubt of it. Right up the loop and I'm fair in the soup, And I haven't the strength to get out of it. Once on a time I could eat a big steak, Not half a steak and I make no mistake. 'Til I met Miss Blake, now my appetite's spent For she lives in my heart but she pays me no rent. CHORUS: Love, love, love, look what it's done for me: I eat no breakfast, I eat no dinner, And every day I get thinner and thinner. Waste not, want not and I'm wasting every day: Wasting my money and I'm wasting my time 'Til I'm wasting myself away. 2. Now, once for my breakfast I could eat fifty eggs, Now I can't go forty nine of them. I'd muscles hard, like bladders of lard But alas now I can't see a sign of 'em. I got so thin that the suits that I wear Fit me nowhere and I don't think it's fair. She don't seem to care if to nothing I shrink I'm afraid to wash now lest I slip down the sink. CHORUS Speaking of Cosmotheka did anyone see them at the Cardiff folk festival years ago? They did a workshop about music hall & they saw me as I was just passing the room where it was being held & Al rushed out & asked me to sing a song. I pointed out that I didn't know any music hall songs but he said that it didn't matter. When I'd finished they got up and said that whilst it was obvious that I didn't sing music hall songs I was the sort of person who would have if I'd been alive at the relevant time!!

Subject: Lyr Add: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE (John Prine, Keith Sykes From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Dec 21 - 11:11 AM I see in this thread we have a collection of songs with the title LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, or something similar. How could we have missed this one? LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Written by John Prine & Keith Sykes As recorded on John Prine’s album “German Afternoons” (1986) 1. He stumbled through the alley with his long coat on, Nothing but a bottle in his hand. She sat in her apartment lonesome to the bone, Wondering what had happened to her man. CHORUS: Love, love, love, love— Nobody ever understands All the things that go Between a woman and a man. 2. When they'd walk down the sidewalk, the street would shine With the kind of love no human heart can fake, And they vowed to stay together till the end of time Like the couple that stands on top of the wedding cake. CHORUS 3. If I should live to a ripe old age, The only lesson I may ever learn Is to not stand so close to the flame of love Unless you are willing to get burned. CHORUS All the things that go, Between a woman and a man. |
