You might try lyrics for Ernie Mayne, from whose recording the Sealeys got it.

As Cosmotheka they recorded it on "You only had to ask!" Folk Sound Records FSCD55, but I have a feeling that disc is no longer available though only about 7 years old. 2nd hand market maybe?

Can't remember the verses, but I do remember the words they used to sing at the same time as the ones you've quoted above, as a counterpoint:

"Love, in other words an intimate affection for a member of the opposite persuasion, scrutinise the awful havoc it has wrought in me;

My matutinal repast is ended, as for dinner it is scornfully rejected

Every day I'm more emaciated, more debilitated and more dolefully dejected

I remember dear Al Sealey - who didn't exactly look like he was "wasting away" - used to get to the line about "every day I get thinner and thinner", then he'd pause, fix his eye on someone in the audience and scowl: "I can lip-read, and that was very 'urtful."

I saw Dave Sealey, just a couple of days ago, doing a show about Max Miller. If I'd known this was going to come up, I could have asked him then!

I know Cosmotheka was famous for reviving old music-hall songs. Was this an old music-hall song? If so, does anybody know wrote it, or who performed it originally, or anything else about the song?

If it IS a music-hall song, I might be able to find the sheet-music, if I had more to go on.

Speaking of Cosmotheka did anyone see them at the Cardiff folk festival years ago? They did a workshop about music hall & they saw me as I was just passing the room where it was being held & Al rushed out & asked me to sing a song. I pointed out that I didn't know any music hall songs but he said that it didn't matter. When I'd finished they got up and said that whilst it was obvious that I didn't sing music hall songs I was the sort of person who would have if I'd been alive at the relevant time!!
