Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: Derek Date: 05 Jul 99 - 04:01 PM I believe I have an LP record by Paddy Roberts. 'At The Blue Angel' I think it's called. Next time I'm home I'll look it out and see if the song is on it. |
Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: Folkbloke Date: 05 Jul 99 - 06:13 PM Thanks Derek, look forward to hearing from you. Even if bethnal green is not on the LP, I would appreciate the details of recordlabel and number as I would love to get hold of a copy, most probably from a collectors sale or something. If anyone else can help with any Paddy roberts material please contact. |

Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: Splott Man Date: 28 Sep 06 - 03:52 AM I've got a Paddy Roberts songbook at home, in a box somewhere as I've just moved. I've put a post-it in my pocket to look it up this weekend. Will hopefully post the lyrics next week, if someone doesn't beat me to it. |
Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 28 Sep 06 - 07:19 AM Yer 'tis. BALLAD OF BETHNAL GREEN (Paddy Roberts) I tell a tale of a jealous male and a maid of sweet sixteen. She was blond and dumb and she lived with her mum on the fringe of Bethnal Green, And she worked all week for a rich old Greek and her dad was on the dole, But her one delight on a Friday night was to have a little rock and roll. Now one fine day in the month of May she met her big romance. He was dark and sleek with a scar on his cheek and a pair of stovepipe pants, And she said, 'To you I would be true through all the years to come' For she loved the gay abandoned way he chewed his chewing gum. Now all went well because he fell for her girlish charms, But he had a doubt when he caught her out in someone else's arms, And he said, 'Look here! You know, my dear, this is going a bit too far' (fa-la) And he went quite white and sloshed her right in the middle of a cha-cha-cha. They went before a man of the law who said, 'This will not do. I've had enough of the sort of stuff I get from the likes of you.' And was she peeved when he received a longish term in clink! In a fit of pique she married the Greek and now she's dressed in mink. Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 28 Sep 06 - 07:24 AM P.S. That is exactly as it was typed, but when it first came out verse 2 referred to drainpipe pants (not stovepipe, which was the type of hat worn by Abe Lincoln and Isambard Kingdom Brunel), which were the uniform choice of the "Teddy Boys" of that time. Don T. |
Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: Lanfranc Date: 28 Sep 06 - 10:44 AM So, why change it, Don? "Drainpipe pants" makes sense in the context of the time when the song was written, as does "in the middle of a cha-cha-cha". "Stovepipe" is not only anachronistic it's even more confusing than the original! Paddy Roberts recordings always had "drainpipe", and that's what I always sing. I also do "The Belle of Barking Creek", "The Englishman and his Sang-froid", "Follow Me", "Love isn't What it Used to Be", and "Merry Christmas you Suckers" when roused. Trouble is, at my age, I take a bit of rousing! Alan |
Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 28 Sep 06 - 02:19 PM I didn't change it Alan. When I did a search, that's what came up, which is how I posted it, then noticed the word and put in the second post. Don T. |
Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: Lanfranc Date: 28 Sep 06 - 07:02 PM Ah - I didn't think that it seemed like a Donish thing to do! Sorry for the misunderstanding. Alan |
Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: Gurney Date: 28 Sep 06 - 11:43 PM Don't forget the 'to my rit-fal-lal, to my titty-fal-lal, to my itty-bitty fal-dal-day' chorus. Drainpipe pants. Started well. They came before a man of the law. Not that it matters. |

Subject: ADD: Follow Me (part) From: Splott Man Date: 11 Jan 08 - 11:03 AM Here's all I can remember after 40 years: FOLLOW ME (as sung by Paddy Roberts) When I was a little Wolf Cub, and you were a Brownie, We always remembered our good turn each day. First it was your turn, and then it was my turn. And life was so wonderful and carefree and gay. Follow me, follow me, Tonight is the night of the Jamboree. When I was a little Wolf Cub, and you were a Brownie, We learned all the regulations of which there were lots. We wandered into the clover, and tried them all over, And you did your semaphore, while I did my knots. Follow me, follow me, Tonight is the night of the Jamboree. When I was a little Wolf Cub, and you were a Brownie, We did everything a Wolf Cub and Brownie should do. I wanted to be a Boy Scout so I could salute you With three fingers vertical instead of just two. Follow me, follow me, We'll go to the grotto, and get slightly blotto, To hell with the motto, Follow me. |

Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. I love Mary,
Yes, I've got a date with a crabby old crate called Sadie. |

Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. Lady Jane From: GUEST,Henri Date: 18 Jan 12 - 12:28 PM I seek the lyrics as sung by Paddy Roberts of Lady Jane. Many of his recordings are now available on Spotify but Lady Jane is not. I am certain his lyrics were more repeatable than most of the disgusting lyrics in the many internet Rugby songs and as I wish to be able to sing the song in polite society it would be nice to know his treatment. |
Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: Bert Date: 18 Jan 12 - 12:51 PM For what it is worth, Barking Creek is an open sewer and is the very place that the sewer in "British Workman's Grave" was headed. It is also the creek from the saying "Up the Creek". |
Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: Edthefolkie Date: 14 Sep 12 - 12:10 PM On a whim, nipped into the local Oxfam shop - and there were the two Paddy Roberts EPs in very good condition. They were £3.99 each. But I couldn't resist - especially when I saw the bit on the sleeve about "to clean use a fairly dry martini". They are first pressings by the look of them, 1959 and 1960. Took me straight back to 1959 when we grammar school boys used to play things like this on our Dansettes - a prelude to the much more rebellious stuff which came later. Somebody on one of the threads namechecked Jake Thackray, Ian Dury and Noël Coward in connection with Paddy Roberts - very perceptive I think. I now have to find out who was in the Dennis Wilson Octet/quartet, who presumably play on the tracks, as Dennis Wilson did the arrangements! Not THAT Dennis Wilson, the other one. |
Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: GUEST Date: 14 Sep 12 - 11:58 PM Ed, 'Paddy Roberts Tries Again' names them. "Let Me Introduce The Boys." |
Subject: Lyr Add: I LOVE MARY (Paddy Roberts) From: Nigel Parsons Date: 04 Mar 13 - 04:39 PM I LOVE MARY Paddy Roberts I love Mary, Shy little blue-eyed Mary. Warm and glowing as an Autumn sky. Sweet, sweet, Mary, never a bit contrary. And I'll love her 'til the day I die. But I'm going out with a blousy ol' trout called Sadie. She's right on the ball, but she ain't what you'd call a lady. But she's twice as rich as Croesus; Sleeps in golden fleeces. And when I see the dough, my principles go to pee-pee-pieces. I'm weak in the head when it comes to the ready money. Just jingle the tin, very soon I'll begin to dance. And though I love Mary, pretty little Mary, Mary doesn't stand a chance. Yes I've got a date with a crabby old crate called Sadie. Got a face like a cart, and believe me she's not a lady. As a beauty she's a stumer, but I'll keep my sense of humour. I can stomach the lot, as long as she's got that old mazuma. So I put out the cat, and I do this and that for Sadie. And if I keep my health I could end up a wealthy man. And though I love Mary, gentle little Mary Mary doesn't suit my plan, Mary's just an also ran. Lyrics transcribed from "Paddy Roberts tries again" NP |
Subject: RE: The songs of Paddy Roberts. From: Nigel Parsons Date: 04 Mar 13 - 04:42 PM The above transcription is a great improvement on my previous attempt which was from memory of over 30 years! Now I'll look at some of the linked threads to see what else needs corrections! |
