"Drainpipe pants" makes sense in the context of the time when the song was written, as does "in the middle of a cha-cha-cha". "Stovepipe" is not only anachronistic it's even more confusing than the original! Paddy Roberts recordings always had "drainpipe", and that's what I always sing. I also do "The Belle of Barking Creek", "The Englishman and his Sang-froid", "Follow Me", "Love isn't What it Used to Be", and "Merry Christmas you Suckers" when roused. Trouble is, at my age, I take a bit of rousing! Alan |

They were £3.99 each. But I couldn't resist - especially when I saw the bit on the sleeve about "to clean use a fairly dry martini". They are first pressings by the look of them, 1959 and 1960. Took me straight back to 1959 when we grammar school boys used to play things like this on our Dansettes - a prelude to the much more rebellious stuff which came later. Somebody on one of the threads namechecked Jake Thackray, Ian Dury and Noël Coward in connection with Paddy Roberts - very perceptive I think. I now have to find out who was in the Dennis Wilson Octet/quartet, who presumably play on the tracks, as Dennis Wilson did the arrangements! Not THAT Dennis Wilson, the other one. |
