I have recorded this French folk song in Prince Edward Island, Canada. I am told that it could have been translated from an English-language folksong. Would anyone recognize it? Here are the French words with a rough translation :

Translation :

1) While turning the corner,
While turning the corner
I noticed a big inn.
I went in to have a little drink.
After one, I had two.
I didn't get drunk
But I came pretty close.

Refrain

It was close, man, it was close,
It couldn't have got any closer.
It was close, man, it was close,
I'm telling you that on the street
I was walking crookedly.

2) While turning the corner,
Getting around the corner,
I ran into a beautiful girl.
I looked at her like this,
I looked at her like that.
I didn't kiss her
But it came pretty close.

Thanks very much,

Georges Arsenault
