Yes, we're coming up to that time of year when all good men, women, morris dancers and banjo players should gird up their bells, gather up their 'struments, raise up their voices, and sally forth (sally gardens, sally free-and-easy, etc.)to the Kentish Horse Markbeech, Edenbridge for this year's Pig's Ear Kentish Horse Folk Ale.

This year, it's on Friday 29th - Sunday 31st May.

Except that it actually starts on Wednesday 27th May with a gig at THE OLD EDEN from rock covers band Dangerous Age (featuring lead singer "Pig-cussion" Keef.)

Thursday 28th May, Travelling FOlk will be getting us in the mood with a session at the Kentish Horse.

Yes, the camping field will be open from Wednesday, though the portaloos might not arrive until Thursday. If you're going to be there before Friday, it would be best to give Gina and Jeremy at the Horse a call first - 01342 850493.

Well guys.. hope that you have ordered good weather. The flying Citroen has gone to the big scrapyard in the sky. It's replacement is a Hyundai Matrix... no - not quite a 4 x 4, but hope it can compete in the Brian Rogers handicap bog race if necessary. Pleased to report that the Fox And hounds Folk Club has found a new home.

The Folk Club has a brand new venue, and it's not too far away from the old one. Lovely Pete has arranged for us to go to his local, The Foresters in Wilmington. It's address is 235 Dartford High Street, but that's at the pretty end!

We start there on Monday 4th May. I know it's a Bank Holiday, but please make an effort to be there. We want to create a good impression. I have spoken to the landlady, Katy, she seems very nice and keen to have us there. We'll probably coming straight from Rochester Sweeps Festival.

I would love to attend this year has I have never been before and have heard so much about it. I wish to camp from the Thursday night ,

Now can I just turn up and pay for me pitch etc or do I have to book?
Where is the nearest station to the campsite.
I camp and travel light so are there shops nearby.
More importantly is there a Off license nearby.
I also like to cook me own food ever on a couple of stobes or on the embers a Fire would the latter be possible?

- Tickets are cheaper if you buy them in advance but you can get them "on the door" (well, from the tent) from Friday onwards.Info on http://www.folkale.co.uk
- Nearest station is Cowden - about 1.5 miles from the Kentish Horse; small station in the middle of nowhere and no transport there. If you don't want a hike carrying your stuff, get the train to Edenbridge Town and take a taxi, it's only a ten minute journey.
- I'm afraid Edenbridge is the nearest source of shops - nothing in Markbeech. But the Kentish Horse will be serving food all weekend (I think they're doing breakfasts again, will check).
- You can bring your own drink on the campsite, but not on the festival site as it's in the pub garden, and it would be rather rude to our hosts at the Kentish Horse who let us take over their place for a weekend. So in the marquee, garden and bar, drinks bought from the pub only, please.
- Stoves and BBQs are no problem.
- The campsite is accessed through the pub car park. There's a water tap and there will be loos.

I have a spare filter if you need one desperately. I'll have it with me the Piggy. At present I have taken the core out of the old one on the basis that I use fresh water daily so what's the point of the filter? The non-return valves are horrid to change. They are plastic (if it's like mine) and you need to get all the small-bore fittings off to get a tight-fitting socket on otherwise the corners round off and then you ARE stymied. I found a bloke in Nottingham who would do the parts cheap - but mine still dribbles if you run the heater before you have attached the drop-in pump.

The bloke wot does the bits on my van that I can't took another look at mine (and it still dribbles as aforesaid) and he had to get at it by removing the Carver II fitting panel from the van (from the outside) to put it on a bench to dismantle. I want to try adding another non-return in the pipe. That seemed to work fine on the old van but the pipe diameters are different.

If you put the water container above the inlet socket, then water will not drain out, but siphon in, and if you then have hot water it is definitely the non-return valve (or maybe the pump) that is the problem.

I also have a very hi capacity pump I want to try, to get a better shower, but some people are telling me that if I overdo it I could blow all the seals in the Carver II and possibly throughout the water system. The hicap in my old van never did that though, on a much older system. If it works you can have my old one to try out if you like.

Indeed after watching the fun from the confort of me own tent I packed up in a jiffy and retired to the Tallyho to await my lift home.
I was some what puzzled to find your trailer sitting in the Tally Ho car park but there was no sign of you or the Volvo. It was still there at 3.30 when my lift home arrived. I took the liberty to knock on the door of your trailer but there was no one In. What Happened?

Knockers: yes, one Volvo, two trailers. Both out of field like dose of salts (secret, long steady run up, commit firmly, control the slide through the gate, impressed the hell out of Romany Man). So I had to pop one trailer in pub carpark, tow other home, come back for first... All with an iffy head gasket in the turbo...

This year plan might be to take the green one (the 2-litre) to Piggy, as I think it has an LSD, very useful in field.

Hi Open Mike.
Re to cook in a biscuit tin, Its on the web go to Google type in biscuit tin oven.

I have no pictures of mine but I cook most or if not all of my meals on the open camp fire or in a biscuit tin oven on a throw away barbecue. When I am camping . It comes with both trial and error and burned offerings to begin but I have become quite good at it and well known for doing it.
I cook whole Chicken and Fish and with my further two tier I can steam has well by creating steam from a reservoir of water stored in another tin. My Grandfather taught me to cook in a tin when I was a boy because he was a Army man and had mastered the biscuit tin cooking and passed it on to me. But like any Cooking you must take into consideration Heat and distance from both flame and embers or you will burn the lot.. I use flour and water seals to create a airtight cooking oven.
I will be cooking like this at Pigs Ear so I try to get some photos and post them on this site when the event is finished. Thanks for your interest Regards Pierre.

I forgot Richard you had two trailers at Knockers last year. A field with two gates is useful use one for the duration of arriving and back and forth etc Re cars. And use the second entrance for the day of leaving .

Yes indeed you have to be careful. I put flat stones in one of my ovens so I could take it off the heat from below and stone bake. from the tin above I was trying to bake bread.. What I did not know was the stones had to be sun cooked dried right through. These stones looked dry on the outside but were wet on the inside. I was in the kitchen and there was one almighty BANG. The biscuit tin lid I have never recovered I think it remains are on the roof of my house. I solved the problem by drilling a hole and placing a piece of copper pipe to act has a kind of steam valve.

I hasten to add I would never cook with stones on a camp site and when I cook at knockholt camp I always just cook with ordinary tins so there is no. worries just saves a lot of washing up and enables me to travel light.

We oldies accompanied the Young Coppers to the Pigs Ear last year. A very friendly small festival it was too. I'm a bit biased about the location as my auntie lived next door to the Kentish Horse and my grandma down the road and I've always viewed Markbeech and Horseshoe Green as God's own country. Do try and have a walk around the area if you get a chance, it's beautiful...oh, and there's a fabulous walk through the woods and fields up to the pub from Cowden station.

My grandfather in WW1 cooked a dead piglet in a empty metal Ammunition box in Flanders .
Once cooked it was immediately confiscated by the Company Sergeant Major who had it in turn confiscated from him by his senior officer and so on. Once eaten by who ever, it was traced back to him and he was put on a charge for stealing a Pig.

I have just looked up the train journey. Kidbrooke to London Bridge. Change at London Bridge.
London bridge to Cowden Journey time in all 66 minutes. Woodsie said he would take my camping stuff down Thursday so if I get the early train I aim to be on site by 12.00.
Unless of course I get waylaid in some country pub when I get off at Cowden.

Caravan watch - Tried to replace the cold inlet on the Carver Cascade 2 but the old one was brittle and snapped!!!!! Looks like I'll have to get the whole carver unit out, somehow strip out the old plastic before I can get the new one in. So it may be hot water via kettle for the Pigs Ear festival. Good write up in the Maidstone edition of the Kent Messenger I see.

If you can get the snap-on hose connectors off, it is but the work of half an hour to drop the Carver 2 out of the van - outwards, although you will need to clean off all the old sealant and re-seal afterwards. With the Carver out it should not be too hard to get the old valve out - if necessary, careful work with a hand-drill and scriber must succeed, but do not overdo the drilling and make sure that it is straight and central.

I should have fitted the high pressure pump today and tested the water installation, but I have in stead rested after yesterday's imbibitions!

I have worked all afternoon on making my own Chinese lanterns like the ones we used on the 24th, in Upper Stokeit was very successful. In the experiment I used a bag from a well know Burger Chain some cotton a match box and a Night light, The fist went up in the air but set alight and came crashing down into my lavender bush where a bucket of water at hand put out the offending flames so after a few adjustment to the inner hanger the second was a great success I make some for Pigs Ear.

Essex Girl and Naughty forty everything is sorted being picked up at 1200 from my place and can bring full camping equipment so little apprentice can have my sleeping quarters in my big tent and so has not to disturb her if she retires before us we can both sleep in the adjoining floor space i van bring cookers and all much of my stuff is throwaway after the event so coming back is no problem.

Thanks to a bit of bodgery with garden hose and jubilee clips the new shower pump works. Too soon to say whether it will be much of an improvement in the wet but on paper the delivery rate is a lot better.

But the non-return valve is still pants and I am going to have to figure out how to get an inline one into the circuit.

Other job before Friday is to check the generator just in case.

Between Friday and Knockers I can rip the shower plumbing apart to put the shower on the other side and install new shower rail and curtains. Big Dick promises me that my awning will be fixed by then too.

So, John, in case it is any use I have a spare water pump.

Caravan watch - Richard, the water pump's fine (at the moment) so I can get water up. With a bit of blue tac and a prayer we will have cold water, and just boil what's needed as and when, a sort of shower without the shower head. At least we have a wet room and a 'cludgie' - the most important things for an ageing hippy :-)

There is no camp fire at Piggy's.

The pub sells nice but quite costly food so you have no chance of using their cooking facilities.

I used to have a chimnea but it got nicked and I have not got a firepit.

Well, prepare for a gush. Totally, totally glorious. Wonderful weather people and music. The best Piggy ever (despite the untouchable music from the Young Coppers last year) taking one thing with another.

For the first time in my life I enjoyed a "tunes session" - taking my place in the mandolin orchestra with most of "Wasps in the Woodshed" (including TWO harp players) a wonderful piano accordian player, two wonderful button meolodeon players, a threepenny bit player more than holding her own - a silver piccolo player (I think it was), and driving rhythms from Bernard on the Djembe nobly assisted by a girl who played castanets better than average and kept hinting at apanish dance with her movements, and I think it must have been her sister dancing her skin off. And many others - at least two fine fiddlers, three tenor players who kept out of each other's way - all avoiding the "Lets play another Irish tune as fast as we can - how do they tell them apart" trap. I think there were a few Irish tunes, but it never got samey.

Fine stuff outside in the big (ish) tent on the PA rig. The Piggies themselves unfailingly helpful and polite, and pretending to like what one played (Oh, all right, Grant did say of my version of "Gentlemen of High Renown" - - - "Only you would think of doing that to it" - but I took it as a compliment.

A terrific range of music, from 60s/70s electric rock through to hard core 1954 English folk.

The pub food not exhorbitantly priced, a good range of beer in good condition and at fair prices, level(ish) part s of the field kept for caravans to avoid bog driving even if it was wet, which it wasn't.

Bargain price tee-shirts.

It's almost deserted here now. Marquee came down and went in 1 hour (how do they do that). We had a lovely gentle end of festival session last night, with Bob Kenward finishing the evening with one of his brilliant songs, and what's more finished on time.
A big, BIG thanks you to Pig's Ear for putting on such a great and rounded festival. As Richard so rightly said it was an inspired mix of guests, none of which would disgrace any of the bigger festivals. All in all a brilliant time.
On a personal note, thanks to all who came to the friday, saturday and sunday evening sessions, you make my life so easy.

We had to rough it by eating "dogfood" stew, veggie pasta, and bacon sarnies. Our newly acquired winch worked like a dream, and putting the caravan in the garage was a breeze. A very well done to everybody who both played and sung at the sing around,s and also to the booked performers in the Marquee a brilliant show one and all. It was fantastic to have a floor spot so close to those Harpists and to see first hand how both beautifully they played and clearly how difficult the Harp is to play and then later on in the evening to have the pleasure of sitting with them and my other tent neighbors to chat and drink and tell jokes more or less to sun up Sunday Morn.

Well done to the bar staff of The Kentish Horse who worked tirelessly especially on the Saturday night when the place was bursting . At one point I went to the bar clean shaven and by the time I was served I had grown a Goatee but none the more for that well done.

To Naughty forty and little apprentice it was fun having you share but may be difficult to comfortable accommodate you both in future has I have decided to go back to a small tent. solely to be able to travel light to these great events. I hope the new people who have my tent now have has much fun has I have had in it ?

Ride On was great on the Saturday night and I really got into it although this time I left the finger picking out has that is Mr Bridges bit. I fear in my enthusiasm I may have drowned out poor Melodeon boy who was sitting right next to me ,Sorry mate.

Thanks to Richard Bridge who showed me with great patients and explanation the proper way to string up a guitar 1.2.1. tuition which I wont forget, clearly a great teacher and a wit to boot.

I should have seen Chris the healer a perfect gentleman who sorted out Naughty Forty when her foot got thorns it on the Saturday and he worked tirelessly to remove all of them back at our tent.

I am some what worried that Val wants me to wear a long dress at Knockholt? some thing to do with me long hair and tight bum in cut-downs. Hopefully it was because she was pissed and now she is sober she wont remember or if she does she will clearly realize that the whole idea is ridiculous and that will be the end of the matter. Yeah Right?

And finally to John Barden who if it was not for him I would have had a difficult time getting to the event on Friday and a impossible time getting both meself and all me stuff back home again.

I spent ages editing the RB performance video and then another 3 attempts to upload to youtube only to have it rejected. Thank you Woodsie, I'm not ashamed of that. Pity Grant puts so much treble on the guitar and indeed PA generally: a bit less brightness, and a spot of bass boost, chorus, and reverb (or even straight slapback) would have transformed that performance. In real life the guitar is quite warm and resonant, and the bug in it is a Headway (a good one).

I see what you meant about the "toys" shelf on the mic stand though - it gets in the way of your shots of my left hand almost every time!

It probably isn't Grant's fault. My camera is a cheapo JVC with built in Mic and youtube compresses and changes format. I thought your guitar sounded fantastic. Part 2 & 3 will follow on my next post - I have had to compress these to 10% to upload quickly so quality may not be perfect, I think it's OK. I will eventually burn the uncompressed stuff to a DVD when I get time!

Nice one Woodsie well-done done mate does not work too well on my Apple keeps cutting out and starting again but the sound is good and i think Richard ,s Guitar sound great.

Thank you Woodsie. My guitar mistakes on "Coalhouse Door" grate, but the ones on Substitute are not too obvious. Shame you missed the little tease intro about it being a folk song and seeing who clocked it the first time down the neck - you start at the second time down!

Pete - the reason it is pausing is to do with streaming speed. The data has to be buffered first then played back. What is happening here is that the playback is faster than the buffering, Press the pause button and you will see the buffering grey line move slowly left to right, when you press play again the "play line" is a darker red colour and follows over the "buffer line"

Richard - I did edit a lot of stuff out because I wanted to keep the upload to a minimum size. There was a lot of overpowering background noise (probably me!) on the intro. Sorry about the poorer quality of part 2 & 3 but, again I had to squeeze the file to a minimum as I was hogging the family computer! Part 1 was a bit better but took ages to upload.
