'South' is a common/popular fiddle tune and I've seen words for it. They were online and now I can't seem to find them again. Some of the guys I played music with tonight were talking about it, asking if anybody knew the words or where to get them.

Anybody know words for it?

Thanks,
M

Not "South" by Bennie Moten?

"Down South Rag"?

Gene, Bennie Moten's "South" is the first that came to my mind too, but it is a jazz tune from the 1920s. No lyrics originally. First recorded by his Kansas City Orchestra.

Not that there is anything wrong with fiddlers using it. A catchy one to dance to.

the one I'm thinking of goes something like:

down below that old *** line
******             fine
(few more lines I don't remember at all)
that's what I'm talking about

Where the folks are *** all day
****                way

(and some more lines I can't remember)

--I'll keep looking and will maybe be able to at least come up with a midi or something. I've never heard the song called any other name..just "South"

Thanks,
M

That is Bennie Moten's "South," a jazz tune revised for fiddle.

Thank you, Q.

I'm popping this back up in case somebody knows (or knows where to find) words.
I'm not quite ready to give up yet.

Several people lent a hand [EAR] in transcribing this ditty.

South
As recorded by Maddox Brothers & Rose

Down below that old Dixon line
There's a place - really is fine
Don't you know what I'm talkin' about
You want to find out
Then take the trip with me.

Down below that old Dixon line
Where the sun is happy to shine
Where a friendly face is common to see
That's where I'm longin' to be.

Where the folks are happy and gay
And the easy way is the right way
Where the bees make honey all day
Don't you know you're right next to heaven down South.

Where the moon shines mellow and bright
And the breeze plays tag with the night
That's where the sundown gals hold you tight
Lordy, how I love the South.

Note. Sounds like Rose sings [Don't-chu][Slang] to me.

Gene,
Did you find the song online somewhere to hear?
If so, would you tell me where so I can hear it too?

Thanks,
M

There is another old thread about this song: Lyr Req: South - western swing. It has some lyrics (possibly incomplete) and links to some sound files.

Thanks, Jim Dixon..I'll look at that old thread.
What did you put in the searchbox to find it? My mudcat search didn't turn up with anything..

I have refreshed one thread with lyrics, there are others. Jim Dixon posted lyrics in two of them.

Easily found with -moten-; but -south- brings up too much and most seekers would give up.

I didn't know 'moten' when I was searching..I just didn't bring up anything when I tried. If I'd gotten too much, I would have filtered through them myself instead of opening a new thread--I got far too little.

those old threads will be interesting to me..thanks for popping one!
