Within the past half hour, I've been having problems with firefox. To wit, none of my three email programs will open, and Mudcat is giving difficulties. It took three tries to get the "new thread" box to open. However, if I go to Safari, all is well.

Anyone else experiencing same?

Thanks - Tom

My last reply didn't seem to make it here. I was sent a PM advising shutting down FF and restarting it, but it won't shut down.

Tom, Max has been tweaking Mudcat and said it would be slow off and on for the next couple of weeks. I am using Firefox with no problems, though when I migrate from and to Mudcat, it does seem a bit slow, including going to my gmail. Hope that helps.

"won't shut down"??!!
Try Ctrl-alt-delete, find Firefox in the list and tell it to close.

Just sent an email to my computer tech. I should have mentioned that this is on a Mac.

On my last attempt at FF, nothing would open - white screens, strange messages, etc.

Well, FireFox is free. If you can access Mozilla you can (and should, in my estimation) download the current version, and reinstall. Your presently set up version may be corrupted.

A situation somewhat like you describe can happen if you've had an ABEND1 while the program was open.

1 ABEND = Abnormal End of Program (arcaic, but accurate)

If you've had a power interruption, or anything other than a normal shutdown while "account files" are open, the "login files" often are corrupted just enough to prevent a normal login to your email server. Additionally, if the server doesn't get the full/correct login, it may have sent back a query and is waiting for a response (retry), in which case the program can't close, (even using the Ctl-Alt-Del/Task Manager in Windows, or the Mac equivalent) until the query/response transaction finishes or times out.

Checking and resetting your login parameters may or may not work, since sometimes a corrupted "identity" can't be corrected until it's been "uncorrupted." (Logins are usually encrypted, which makes patching them a little more than usually complex.)

On Windows machines, a Disk Check (Check drive for errors) usually will resolve the mangled file(s). I'm sure that Macs have something similar. After the disk check gets rid of any bent pointers and disconnected fragments, you might have to reset your login passwords/identities.

I can't be sure this is what's described, but it's close enough to be worth looking at possible disk errors and then at your login settings, for each account that had a problem.(?)

John

Firefox IS most current version -- and just reinstalled yet AGAIN just last week (as was the OS).

Despite what Curmudgeon said above, I don't think this is a Firefox problem -- we've been trying to sort out several levels of computer hell for the past few weeks while migrating from the old box with OS 9.2 to the "new" box (purchased pre-owned from above mentioned tech) and setting up a wireless network.

Whatever the glitch is, I think we're getting closer. It's just really annoying as I don't feel confident yet in the computer to load my usual contingent of software (Creative Suite) and get back down to some serious work. I feel as if my life is on hold -- projects left undone, periferals either unconnected or connected to the box without Photoshop, etcet etcet.

Annoying.
