I was in the audience when Newbury Park High School Chorus sang this, and my sister was in the chorus. It was one of only a few they did every year, and half the graduating class had more than truth shining in their eyes whenever they sang it.

I too, sang this song in high school music class. Mrs. Shoemaker was our teacher/conductor/fear-inspirer! I sang alto and stood in the second row, first step of the risers. I could remember all of the words and most of the tune. Not just the alto part, but also the soprano and tenor parts! Loved the song, never thought of looking for the music, until something happened that made me think of it and I sat down in front of the computer. Thanks so much, to whomever found this first!

Dear Ray, The lyrics and melody have stayed with (haunted?) me since performing it with the Chicago Youth Choir (?I think that was the name) school year 1972-73. We recorded an album of that concert with the Symphony and Band groups. It is an amazing thing, this Internet. Cool to see what your 3D company has been doing but bittersweet as I was hoping to find a cache of your songs to move me. Great work.
Curious tho, what is the story of how you came to write Movin oN? MlNS (go Armenia!)

Dear Mr. Hannisian,
I too am a fan of the son you wrote Moving On. Could ease tell me why you wrote it. What is the meaning that you actually were putting words and music to it? I am going through extremely emotional pain and this song came to me. I sung it in choir and was honored with the solo part. I hope to hear from you. I thank you for your time.

First verse: There is a voice that has no name. it comes with evening or behind the rain. I have no time now to stop and explain i just keep movin cause it helps to ease the pain.
Second Verse: The night has music that calls to me across the canyons of and endless sea. I have no time now to stop and explain I just keep moving cause it helps to ease the pain
The third verse is: Speak to me softly, but tell me no lies. I see tomorrow shining in your eyes. I have no time now to stop and explain I just keep moving cause it helps to ease the pain

Lyrics from sheet music by Shawnee Press
Enjoy!

There is a third verse.
It goes:
'The night has music, that calls to me,
Across a canyon, of an endless sea,
I have no time now, to stop and explain,
I just keep moving', 'cause it helps to ease the pain'

My choir sang it all the time last year.... It really helped me heal after my nasty breakup with my ex......

My high school performed a stunning version of this song back in 1982. It was the end of the year and it was really an emotional moment for her heard it. A recording was made, but I lost the record couple of years later. It's been suprisingly hard to find another good recording of it - maybe its fallen off choir playlists over the years. My music tastes has changed over the years but it's still a stunning song.

Still wish I could find the record, but the best version (and I'm sure better versions exist but cant find them) on the internet is at at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MnRJl7SNHE

Is it true that this was inspired by the Aberfan disaster, a catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil-tip that occurred in the Welsh village of Aberfan in 1966, killing 116 children and 28 adults.

As the others I also sang this song in high school chorus in 1976-77. The song is so realistic and reminds me of my life, as time rolled on. Can you send a copy of the sheet music ASTB and a recording of same or where I may find it. You diffinitly were annoited and talented to create such a moving piece. Contact me at Robertdonot@atlanticbb/net. Can't wait to hear from you.

I not only sang "Movin' On" with a men's chorus in the late 70's from North Farmington High School in Michigan...

...we actually made a recording of it!

I still remember standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the studio, and the final 45 we all received.

Now if I could only remember where I put the record!

Anyway, it was pretty amazing to recall this song after almost 35 years, do a search online, and find this thread.

Even MORE amazing, perhaps, is that I actually still remembered most of the 1st Tenor part ("Ah-Ah-Ah-Ahhhhh...") and EVERY lyric.

Congrats to Mr. Hannisian.

And kudos to the Internet!

Todd (NFHS, '78)

OMG I absolutley love this song. I sang it in the early 80's with the Albanettes female choir in Albany NY. We were know for singing very complicated pieces but this by far was one of our favorites...the simplicty is hauntingly beautiful. I sang this to my daughter as she fell asleep as a baby and ever once in a while she will request it even now...she is now 19. Thank You Mr Hannisian this piece will always be with me.

My HS Chorus sang this song in 1973 or 1974. I have loved this song and have used it several times in my 26 years of teaching vocal music. This coming Monday night, my choir will be performing this for our conference Honor's Choir concert. I love this piece and so do my students. Thank you Mr. Hannisian for this! (we have a baritone/soprano singing the first solo and a mezzo singing the second solo....the flute adds the finishing touch to the beautiful layering in this timeless piece)
I'm looking for program notes and found this site.

I was fortunate enough to sing this song at our high school choir's annual Spring concert in 1982 and I absolutely loved it!! I learned the guitar chords and used to play it often. I never owned the sheet music, though I memorized most of the song. It's been years since I heard a choir sing it... until I found it on www.youtube.com today. What a joy it is, to hear this beautiful song again!!!

Sheet music is still available at the publisher, Shawnee Press. Also available at Sheet Music Plus, but you have to buy six copies. Looks like you can buy single copies at Musicnotes.com, but only by special order. I didn't see any merchant who offers download copies for sale. I'd say the best place to go is Shawnee Press.

It was my favourite song.

Thank you everybody for shedding so much light, and thank you, Raymond Hannisian, for writing such a beautiful piece of music. I have very fond memories of that part of my life

Hello, Everyone,

My high school choir performed, "Movin' On," in my senior year of high school, John H. Francis Polytechnic High School, in Sun Valley, California, 1977, choir director, George Attarian.

I took the sheet music home, learned it on my guitar and memorized it. Somehow I lost the sheet music. I remembered everything, the notes, lyrics and guitar chords, but I couldn't remember the actual name of the piece. I kept hunting for it under, "I Just Keep Moving," and variations of that, which are part of the lyrics. No wonder I could never find it. The actual title, "Movin' On," is not in the lyrics.

31 years later, I finally have my answer.

That was really cool to see Mr. Hannissian actually answer the thread. Wow. Mr. Hannisian, if you are still reading this, thank you for writing such a beautiful and truly moving piece. I would love to have a copy of the sheet music again.

Deborah

How about one more "Movin' On" long-lost lyric?

There was a beautiful song in the soul style I have never been able to track down, used to hear it on the radio and never caught who was singing it. I can't give you a vintage because I think it was in 'revival' mode when I was hearing it.   A soul singer who has died (David Ruffin, etc) is mentioned in each verse, and the closing line is 'he's movin' on'.

Perhaps the most recent performance of "Movin' On" was mid-December by the Montera Middle School Vocal Ensemble at the school's Winter Concert. Music Director Thom Kwiatkowski accompanied the choir on piano and two students played flutes. It was one of the high points of the night. First time I'd heard the song and found this thread in looking for bio material on Hannisian. The song has such the feel of those stately African-American hymns of a certain time, like "Lift Every Voice and Sing" (sheet music was dated 1969) that I wanted to know more. Can anyone shed any light on this composer?

I knew it wasn't the song you were looking for. I am guilty of thread creep. Very often a subject gets you thinking of another subject and so on and so on. The good thing about it is that if someone is doing a form search for either "Moving On" they will find reference to both here.

It's one of the joys of DT.
