You know John I have spent hours wondering how things would be different if it hadn't been for some idle smokers burning down the Library on Alexandria, or the Spanish Priests who burned the Mayan astronomical codices because serpant symbols were thought to be satanic. The sacking, burning and vandalizing of everything from museums to the Great Sphinx are all acts by some egotistical A hole who wanted recognition as being better than a predecessor or just wanted a quick "buck".

PS At the Vet a guy told me his dog had caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage. I asked how and he strated with "the flexible gas line to the stove..."

By the way, I just checked youTube and there are several of my NFB films which are not currently on the NFB site. Usually the NFB lawyers are hard at work getting them taken off, but they seem to be napping. Rather than give individual links, (since they come and go), you can just go to youTube and type john weldon or john f weldon into the search box. Lately I found:

I have an old letter from my father reassuring my grandma that I wouldn't be made fun of, because my schoolmates would never have heard of Felix the Cat. Little did he realize that cartoon characters are immortal.   I never had problems with it, it was actually a pretty cool name to have.

Thanks, all, for the encouragement. Yes, I enjoy making these things immensely, and they keep me busy enough to stay out of trouble! The devil finds work for idle hands; who knows what I'd be up to if I didn't have these little projects. So, not only am I grateful, but so are the neighbours!

Here's a little experiment I'd like some help with, if possible. For the last few years I've been uploading my videos to youTube, and the embedding them on my website. But lately I've been frustrated by youTube's low quality, so I've thought I might put higher quality videos directly on my website. The downside is, not everyone has a computer & internet service that can access the higher resolution.

So, if you have a moment, check out this link and tell me what you see & hear...

Possibilities are...
1) Plays right away & looks nice.
2) Takes a loong long time to load.
3) Loads but only sound and/or only picture.
4) doesn't play at all.
5) Other.

It took a couple of minutes to download but I have the slowest of high speed DSL (500Kbs). The sound and picture quality is a vast improvement over YouTube.

Well, I went to the control panel and checked on Quick Time and it said that there were some components not working so I did a fix and still it didn't work. So I removed the program and went to the site that Bobad suggested and did a new download. John it works great. Connects quickly and the visual is much better than y/tube. I'd stick with Q/time.

After downloading QT and telling it no, no, no, no I do NOT want you to take over my PC... far better quality... downloads fast (I have high speed Rogers).

Thank you all very much for the feedback, it has been very helpful.

YouTube is very egalitarian, and the movies run on almost anything. The downside is, their compression looks and sounds mushy. (They recently claimed to have improved this, but not by much.)

I'll continue to put stuff up on youTube, but I'll make higher-res copies on my own website, including some of my previous videos. I've discovered that the films the NFB puts up can be embedded on other sites, so some of my old NFB films will start appearing there too.

For techies... ...I'm using a video codec called "H.264" which manages to achieve an incredible 40 - to- one compression ratio (compared to standard "DV" video) with almost no visible loss.   It's been included with Apple's Quicktime for 2-3 years.

For sound I use "AAC" which is becoming quite standard in things like the iPod and sounds nicer than MP3.

Thanks again. I'll be polishing up my website aver the next few weeks....
