Subject: Tech: SeaMonkey Won't Print (sometimes)
From: Uncle_DaveO

In SeaMonkey, suddenly, in my wife's web account, if she tries to print, say an email, she'll get an error message, "Printing failed when starting the document". Same thing often happens (I don't know about "always") printing from various web sites .

After the obvious tries at printer turnings-on-and-off, rebooting, checking cable connections, etc., I got down to suspecting the printer software was corrupted, so I uninstalled and reinstalled the printer. Same problem, same error message. I can print from other programs, like Quicken and WordPerfect.

Copy-and-pasting the email message to compose a new email in her account and trying to print that email gives the same error message.

But copying the email from her inbox and pasting it into a new email in my own inbox and then printing that document is successful.

Based on the above, I'm assuming (perhaps wrongly) that some setting in her SeaMonkey settings is wrong, but if so, what?

Help, anyone?

Have you looked at what you're trying to print using the "Print Preview" setting first? (Under the File menu). Perhaps there is more information that way? You may also want to compare the "Page Setup" settings. Maybe the printer isn't recognized for some simple reason.

Just a diagnostic thought, to get the conversation rolling.

SRS, I opened an "old" email, from before the trouble began. Same problem printing, just as her current emails behave.

I then Print-Previewed that email, and tried to print from that Preview image. Same problem.

Page Setup seems to be unexceptionable, and in any case seems to have no settings in it that could relate to this problem.

This morning, thinking my SeaMonkey installation might be corrupted, I went to Mozilla and downloaded the current SeaMonkey, ver 1.1.16. That's the same VERSION I've been using, by the way. Uninstalled SeaMonkey, and then reinstalled from the new download I had just got from Mozilla. Same problem.

This isn't your first problem with SeaMonkey. Maybe you should switch to FireFox and use Thunderbird for your email. I use those and love them. Mozilla Thunderbird is the easiest of the various resident email programs I use now.

I think you need to try the same "fix" you did last time--right click on the icon, go to the properties, and look into the compatibility of the program. There is a compatibility wizard in Windows that might find something.

SRS, my problems previously were not in SeaMonkey, although that's where I observed them, because that's the browser I use. At least if we're talking about the same problems.

In this case, I suspect it's in some setting within SeaMonkey, because the problem comes up in my wife's application of SeaMonkey and not in mine. Right clicking on the SeaMonkey icon and making changes would equally affect both my account and my wife's, I expect. Since you suggest it, I will look at it, but I don't expect to find the problem there.

I really don't want to use FireFox (though it's a good program as far as it goes), because it doesn't have email capability built in like SeaMonkey or the old Netscape. That's the main reason I also really don't want to use IE, although there are some other reasons too. I used FireFox/Thunderbird for a while, but I won't do it by choice. I did for a period of time after the old Netscape went away, but I loathe having to get out and into another program in order to read my email.

I loved that old Netscape setup, but I used their separate email there, also. Now I use gmail more than others, but I download it into Mozilla Thunderbird (or access it in web version, from my Google Toolbar in FireFox or IE8). Does SeaMonkey allow web access only, or does it have an app that lets you download your mail (from whatever program) into a resident program on the computer?

That question is more for my edification than for solving your problem. I have SeaMonkey on my computer but I haven't taken the time to set it up with an identity and such.

Are you using one computer for the two of you? Are you logged in both as administrators, and are you logging in on that computer under different usernames, or do you have both of these email and browser accounts set up in one computer user administrator account?

I'll answer your questions in a few minutes, but to back up for a second:

I just got into FireFox on my wife's connection, went to a random site, and tried to print. Same problem printing from the web. So it's not just a SeaMonkey problem. Mozilla, yes, possibly.

My wife and I use the same computer for web and email purposes. When she boots, she comes on to XP Pro in my name. There is (by a mistake when I set up the computer five years ago) also an option signing on in the boot process as her name, but that username has never been used, and nothing is installed in that desktop; it's pure generic startup XP Pro. So, operationally, she is an administrator by the name of Dave Oesterreich.

We both get online through one copy of SeaMonkey (or of FireFox, if we should use it). We don't use FireFox, though we have it, because of the lack of integrated email. When SeaMonkey starts, there is a choice of my connection and hers; if her name is clicked, you get her AOL homepage, and if my name is clicked it takes me directly to Mudcat.org forums.   Clicking the mail icon at the bottom of the SeaMonkey screen gets to her or to my inbox, depending on which connection and homepage was chosen. I don't think it makes any difference to the present problem, but we are both set up to download new mail to this computer, rather than accessing it on the ISP online. We do each have a GMail account, but have never used it.

I may be mistaken, but I think I've heard that SeaMonkey and FireFox both access and/or modify the same set of settings, echoing each other. If that's true and there's a corrupted setting, that might explain why we get the same problem in both FireFox and SeaMonkey. It could also explain why, when I uninstalled and reinstalled SeaMonkey, the problem in her connection persisted. Now that I come to think of it, I intend to uninstall both of those browsers, and then reinstall SeaMonkey and see if a fresh install changes things.

You could get rid of that other logon account if you don't use it (have you forgotten the password by now?) and set up a new one for her, or whoever--if for no other reason than to test out different versions of the browser/email software away from the current desktop settings.

She might also want to see if there is anything to download from AOL as an email program update. It has been many years since I used AOL, but they had a resident email program on the computer so you could read it even if you weren't online. Maybe there is a bug there, not to do with either browser?

As I had intended, I uninstalled both FireFox and SeaMonkey. Then I reinstalled SeaMonkey. Same problem; no change.

From the web, should apply to SeaMonkey as well as it is all the same back end.

Simon G

When trying to print in Firefox, you get the following error:

Printing failed when starting the document

However, when you use other applications, it prints just fine.

To try to solve this issue, try the following steps:

1. Type about:config in the address bar.

2. Locate the entry for print.print_printer.

3. Right-click this entry and select Reset.

4. Close all Firefox windows, then reopen it. Hopefully you are able to print OK now.

Circuitous circumstantial evidence that could be based on pure rumor suggests the problem could possibly be with the printer rather than with Seamonkey(?????)

We just received an update from HP for printer software that incuded a patch to "Repair a loss of printer connectivity with computers following an u..."

The message was truncated, and I haven't found a "traceable" more complete explanation; but with the number of updates being tossed out - by Microsoft, Ubuntu, Seamonkey(?), Firefox, Adobe, et. al. it suggests that "somebody" may have made a change that affects computer to printer connections, for some printers, when printing from some applications, and HP is attempting a repair.

Other printers might possibly be doing, or need to do the same.

It shouldn't take more than a few minutes** to check with the maker of your printer to see if there is an update or patch available for something that might have happened. While it's obviously sort of a long-shot chance, if there is a problem that your printer folk can fix, it might avoid you having to completely redesign your internet interface.

** I know it will most likely take a couple of hours, but it shouldn't take more than a few minutes. Optimism, even if only pretended, helps preserve sanity, as long as neither is carried to extremes.

Okay, call off the dogs! I got it!

In my wife's SeaMonkey connection, I give the print command for the present document/screen page.   I get a PRINT window, with various choices. First choice is "Name:", and window. Browsing in the window shows that there are two choices naming the printer, the second being distinguished by "copy 1". The first was shown as chosen. I chose "Copy 1" instead, and printed.   Success!

Since there was the difference between my wife's problems and my successful printing, I assumed all along that it was something somewhere in her settings, but I hadn't thought of looking into the printing instructions in the popup printing window.

If you go into Control Panel and look at the printers that are installed you should be able to get rid of this false "choice" by deleting the non-working setting. Or at least check which installation you want to be default.
