Hallo all , here´s a song that interest me ,

The Diggers (also known as "Levellers and Diggers") is a 17th century ballad ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZbVmHTiBbs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJYUz31i_Go

here is a lyric I found butis it the right one ??

You noble diggers all stand up now, stand up now
You noble diggers all stand up now
The wasteland to maintain sin (?) cavaliers by name
Your digging does maintain and persons all defame
Stand up now, stand up now
Your houses they pull down stand up now, stand up now
Your houses they pull down, stand up now
Your houses they pull down to fright your men in town
But the gentry must come down and the poor shall wear the crown
Stand up now diggers all
With spades and hoes and plows stand up now, stand up now
With spades and hoes and plows, stand up now
Your freedom to uphold sin (?) cavaliers are bold
To kill you if they could and rights from you to hold
Stand up now diggers all
The gentry are all round stand up now, stand up now
The gentry are all round stand up now
The gentry are all round on each side the are found
Their wisdom so profound to cheat us of our ground
Stand up now stand up now
The clergy they come in stand up now, stand up now
The clergy they come in stand up now
The clergy they come in and say it is a sin
That we should now begin our freedom for to win
Stand up now diggers all
The lawyers they conjoin stand up now stand up now
The lawyers they conjoin stand up now
To rescue they advise, such fury they devise, the devil in them lies
And hath blinded both their eyes
Stand up now, stand up now
'Gainst lawyers and 'gainst priests stand up now stand up now
'Gainst lawyers and 'gainst priests stand up now
For tyrants they are both, even flat against their oath
To grant us they are loathe free meat and drink and cloth
Stand up now diggers all
The club is all their law, stand up now stand up now
The club is all their law, stand up now
The club is all their law, to keep all men in awe
That they no vision saw to maintain such a law
Stand up now diggers all !

any one know

All the best Skarpi

From wiki

'The Diggers' Song (also known as "Levellers and Diggers") is a 17th century ballad, in terms of content a protest song concerned with land rights, inspired by the Diggers movement, composed by Gerrard Winstanley.
The lyrics were published in 1894 by the Camden Society. It is sung to a version of the family of tunes later used for Jack Hall, Captain Kidd and Admiral John Benbow, which according to Palmer was first printed in 1714.'

Your lyrics seem to be identical with the ones printed with second you tube link

However the first link to you tube as sung by Solas and the second part of the first link is a modern version of the story of the Diggers called "The World Turned Upside Down" composed by Leon Rosselson in 1975.

Diggin my self :

From A Ballad History of England, Palmer

You noble Diggers all, stand up now, stand up now,
You noble Diggers all, stand up now,
The wast land to maintain, seeing Cavaliers by name
Your digging does maintain, and persons all defame
Stand up now, stand up now.

Your houses they pull down, stand up now, stand up now,
Your houses they pull down, stand up now.
Your houses they pull down to fright your men in town
But the gentry must come down, and the poor shall wear the crown.
Stand up now, Diggers all.

With spades and hoes and plowes, stand up now, stand up now
With spades and hoes and plowes stand up now,
Your freedom to uphold, seeing Cavaliers are bold
To kill you if they could, and rights from you to hold.
Stand up now, Diggers all.

Theire self-will is theire law, stand up now, stand up now,
Theire self-will is theire law, stand up now.
Since tyranny came in they count it now no sin
To make a gaol a gin, to starve poor men therein.
Stand up now, Diggers all.

The gentrye are all round, stand up now, stand up now,
The gentrye are all round, stand up now.
The gentrye are all round, on each side they are found,
Theire wisdom's so profound, to cheat us of our ground
Stand up now, stand up now.

The lawyers they conjoyne, stand up now, stand up now,
The lawyers they conjoyne, stand up now,
To arrest you they advise, such fury they devise,
The devill in them lies, and hath blinded both their eyes.
Stand up now, stand up now.

The clergy they come in, stand up now, stand up now,
The clergy they come in, stand up now.
The clergy they come in, and say it is a sin
That we should now begin, our freedom for to win.
Stand up now, Diggers all.

The tithes they yet will have, stand up now, stand up now,
The tithes they yet will have, stand up now.
The tithes they yet will have, and lawyers their fees crave,
And this they say is brave, to make the poor their slave.
Stand up now, Diggers all.

'Gainst lawyers and 'gainst Priests, stand up now, stand up now,
'Gainst lawyers and 'gainst Priests stand up now.
For tyrants they are both even flatt againnst their oath,
To grant us they are loath free meat and drink and cloth.
Stand up now, Diggers all.

The club is all their law, stand up now, stand up now,
The club is all their law, stand up now.
The club is all their law to keep men in awe,
But they no vision saw to maintain such a law.
Stand up now, Diggers all.

The Cavaleers are foes, stand up now, stand up now,
The Cavaleers are foes, stand up now;
The Cavaleers are foes, themselves they do disclose
By verses not in prose to please the singing boyes.
Stand up now, Diggers all.

To conquer them by love, come in now, come in now
To conquer them by love, come in now;
To conquer them by love, as itt does you behove,
For hee is King above, noe power is like to love,
Glory heere, Diggers all.

World Turned Upside Down (Diggers)
(Leon Rosselson)
Recorded by Dick Gaughan

In 1649
To St George's Hill
A ragged band they called the Diggers
Came to show the people' s will
They defied the landlords
They defied the laws
They were the dispossessed
Reclaiming what was theirs

We come in peace, they said
To dig and sow
We come to work the land in common
And to make the waste land grow
This earth divided
We will make whole
So it can be
A common treasury for all.

The sin of property
We do disdain
No one has any right to buy and sell
The earth for private gain
By theft and murder
They took the land
Now everywhere the walls
Rise up at their command.

They make the laws
To chain us well
The clergy dazzle us with heaven
Or they damn us into hell
We will not worship
The God they serve
The God of greed who feeds the rich
While poor men starve

We work, we eat together
We need no swords
We will not bow to masters
Or pay rent to the lords
We are free men
Though we are poor
You Diggers all stand up for glory

Stand up now
From the men of property
The orders came
They sent the hired men and troopers
To wipe out the Diggers' claim
Tear down their cottages
Destroy their corn
They were dispersed -
Only the vision lingers on

You poor take courage
You rich take care
The earth was made a common treasury
For everyone to share
All things in common
All people one
We come in peace
The order came to cut them down

Also one of our members, theleveller, uses a mudcat name taken, if I recall correctly, from a movement associated with the diggers. It could be inteesting to PM him about this, if he doesn't join in on his own.

The article linked by Emma B has a good bibliography. Those were times of ferment, very important to the development of dissent.

The book by Joseph Clayton which I mentioned extends to other groups important to democratic history; it also is an ebook but there are many mis-spellings.

Subject: Lyr ADD: The New Diggers Song (Gayle Wade)
From: Joe Offer
Date: 29 May 23 - 10:12 PM

Here's a contribution from Gayle Wade:

NEW DIGGERS' SONG
(Gayle Wade)

The cost of living’s rising, stand up now, stand up now,
The cost of living’s rising, stand up now,
The cost of living’s rising, global temperatures are rising,
And it isn’t so surprising that our anger, too, is rising
Stand up now, stand up now.

You can’t afford the heating, stand up now, stand up now,
You can’t afford the heating, stand up now.
The winter’s bitter cold if you’re poor and if you’re old
‘Put a sweater on’ we’re told, though we’re dying in the cold
Stand up now, Britons all.

The shops are stocked with food, stand up now, stand up now,
The shops are stocked with food, stand up now.
The shops are stocked with food, and you’d buy it if you could
But it isn’t any good, you’ve no money left for food.
Stand up now, Britons all.

It’s hard to see a doctor, stand up now, stand up now,
It’s hard to see a doctor, stand up now.
Not a doctor or a nurse, or a dentist – even worse
If they don’t get better pay, our health service will decay.
Stand up now, Britons all.

We can hardly make ends meet, stand up now, stand up now,
We can hardly make ends meet, stand up now.
We can hardly make ends meet, while the rich and the elite
Drive their limos down the street, fly in private jets to meet
Stand up now, stand up now.

The clergy bless us all, stand up now, stand up now,
The clergy bless us all, stand up now.
The clergy bless us all, the long, the short, the tall;
So long as we’re not gay, though they love us all they say.
Stand up now, Britons all.

'Gainst Tories and 'gainst bankers, stand up now, stand up now,
'Gainst Tories and 'gainst bankers, stand up now.
'Gainst Tories and 'gainst bankers, for they’re all a load of wankers,
Private profit is their aim, they will cheat us without shame
Stand up now, Britons all.

The law forbids a protest, stand up now, stand up now,
The law forbids a protest, stand up now,
If you carry glue or string, a blank paper – anything -
They’ll arrest you for a breach, lock you up to stop free speech
Stand up now, Britons all.

They may have passed a law, stand up now, stand up now,
They may have passed a law, stand up now.
They may have passed a law to keep poor men in awe,
But we don’t consent, for sure, to keeping such a law.
Glory now, Britons all.
