Subject: BS: Thanks Catters From: olddude Date: 04 May 09 - 02:08 PM I just finished my CD with 12 original songs. I did it for my kids. I would never have written music again or picked up the guitar again if it were not for the support of so many Catters. Thank you so very much and I mean that from my heart. It is nothing to write home about, just recorded at home me and the guitar, no studio work or enhancements , rough and amateurish - and more like a live session then anything else. The music is forgettable but for me it was a struggle after so many years away. Thank you Dan |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanks Catters From: olddude Date: 04 May 09 - 02:10 PM Oh and if anyone wants a copy I will send it to you, no cost just PM me your address Dan |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanks Catters From: maeve Date: 04 May 09 - 02:37 PM "It is nothing to write home about..." I disagree, Dan. It is the result of your hard work, joy, and courage. Something special, I'd say. maeve |

Subject: RE: BS: Thanks Catters From: gnu Date: 04 May 09 - 02:54 PM Ditto, ditto, ditto... And, ya know, there are lots of 'Catters around here who were similarly inspired by this bunch... already three on this thread that I know of... and more to come. Congrats. |

Subject: RE: BS: Thanks Catters From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 04 May 09 - 03:44 PM WELL DONE - olddude
Indeed this IS the essence of Mudcat.
On behalf of those you have yet to meet along time from now - THANK YOU. Imagine the feeling - if you could hear your own distant scion singing in the branches of the family tree.
And given the current turmoil in the "upper kingdom" - your notice would have been lost - up there.
Sincerely, Hand me the broom - I'll gladly clear the floor upstairs for a real celebration. |
Subject: RE: Thanks Catters From: Bill D Date: 04 May 09 - 04:43 PM It's a good thing to make things that tell about YOU for your family. Your kids will cherish it...and grandkids. |

Subject: RE: Thanks Catters From: olddude Date: 04 May 09 - 05:18 PM Thank you folks, but it is you good people that I owe. I didn't think I would ever play again after my fingers lost their feeling from the neck injury. Little by little the picking came back just different. Bruce is not only a world class musician. But a world class friend who never let me put the thing down, just kept kicking my butt. So many others I just cannot count. Ditty, and JT, and Ron, and Frank, Art, Kat, Jerry, Kendall, Lizzie, Susan, enjay so many others all saying hey it is working keep at it. I cannot begin to list all the names. The CD isnt much but to me it was everything just to prove to myself I could write and play again. And I wanted original music for my kids. They love it so it worked. Gargoyle giving advise as to how to position the mike to pick up the finger work on the recording. Others saying fix the lyrics not tight enough to make an average song a better song Thank you kind folks, you are in my heart for sure. |

Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: olddude Date: 05 May 09 - 11:16 AM I would be honored Jean The thing I tell folks about mudcat is this. It is not about being a great songwriter or great musician, that is for the masters of the Cat. But if you listen to the masters and the folks on the Cat a person can be a better songwriter or a better musician whatever their skill level is. People here go out of their way to make a person better in whatever they do and if a person is going to fail they have to do that themselves. I was writing and deleting as fast as I was writing - Jayto wrote me and said "if you delete another song I am going to come there and climb all over your A_S". Bruce saying you put that thing down again and will answer to me. People here won't let you fail, you have to do that yourself. We sometimes argue too much with each other, we get upset and I wish we wouldn't do that. But then on the flip side if someone gets sick or wants to do a music project everyone comes out of the woodwork to help. |

Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: Bill D Date: 05 May 09 - 01:28 PM Sitting here listening to the hi-fi versions online. (Spring Waltz at the moment) and let me state clearly.. these are FINE songs! You sing clearly, in tune, and with a great, flowing guitar accompaniment. (It is interesting...my wife, who is the real musician in our house, is sitting at HER computer, doing other things, but humming "Spring Waltz" to herself as she works. No doubt she'll know it by the end of the week... *big smile*) |
Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: olddude Date: 05 May 09 - 02:44 PM Gosh Bill that is so nice of you. I kinda like Katie's song since I did it for my kid's wedding. Ron Bankley put a steel guitar and mandolin into South Bound Train for me and my kids loved it with the added instruments. Thanks Ron!!, my youngest Amy plays that one over and over. |
Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: olddude Date: 05 May 09 - 03:10 PM What you said about the guitar means the World to me. 15 years it sat in the case, oh maybe a strum now and then. I told Bruce, I can't feel that dang strings so i can't play. His comment was "Why do you need to? the finger know where to go .. let them" .. then the picking came back because of a world class friend who said they will work let them do their thing you do yours .. Thank you Bruce, you mean the world to me and I love ya to my brother |

WHOOOPPEEEEEE!! :0) Dan's Myspace "Riding on a Southbound train, on my way back home again....." ...and I'm rockin' from side to side over here, Dan, feeling the motion of that Southbound Train, watching the man looking out the window, dreaming...Such a great song this one. You've a real talent for writing tender songs, and as someone said on Youtube, I think it was kat, your voice sounds like 'kindness' itself, which I thought was such a lovely thing to say, and very true as well. Hey, didn't we all tell you that your music's GREAT!!! I can't wait for my CD to get here. Excited Smiley! :0) I can hear the Apple Hollow Stage calling.. We're all SOOOO proud of you, Dan! Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: sharyn Date: 12 May 09 - 01:16 AM My CD arrived today. More praise for "Southbound Train," my favorite of the bunch: I like the way the second line slides into "Oh, baby." that little bit of melody. |

Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: olddude Date: 12 May 09 - 08:40 AM Oh my brother Ron Bankley really made South Bound Train work for me. I was picking it after I wrote it and was going to toss it. Ron took it added the mandolin and steel guitar and blew me away with the added instruments. Jerry's advise on my finger picking, Art Thieme's advise on my phrasing when I was singing it, Bruce advising me on the flow. Lots of folks willing to help. Thank you Bruce you are most welcome my brother. No halos just horns LOL !! |
Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: maeve Date: 13 May 09 - 07:19 AM The CD arrived! Thanks very much, Dan. I'm listening and loving what I hear. Good for you for being open to help from friends while keeping your own sound and style. maeve |
Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: SINSULL Date: 13 May 09 - 07:58 AM My copy arrived yesterday. Thank you, Dan. Tonight I get ti listen to it but I have heard some of the cuts on Utube. |
Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: bankley Date: 13 May 09 - 08:25 AM glad I could help out.... here's some related trivia... the horn on Southbound Train was actually from a southwest bound freight rolling along the Quebec City/Windsor corridor... I had just finished my slide part and heard the 'whistle' blowing so I stuck a mic out of the door and there you have it.... I've always found it interesting how the horn's pitch will drop a half tone as it passes... something to do with air pressure and velocity, 'tho I wasn't close enough this time to capture that effect much.... I suppose if I lay down on the trax it would give some surround-sound samples, but it could cause other problems... just ask the squashed penny... |
Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: olddude Date: 13 May 09 - 08:32 AM Ron that was absolute genius however, I loved it... Dang should have put a thank you on the disk to the Quebec Train line also .. LOL |
Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: bankley Date: 13 May 09 - 11:05 AM good old CNR.... talk about 'laying down tracks'..... the 1st train tunnel in Canada is here in Brockville.... runs about 3/4 mile...belonged to the Grand Trunk Railroad.... it's not used now, but you can go a couple of hundred feet inside it near the river... all made of greystone blocks in an arch,,,, nice reverb.... |
Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: wysiwyg Date: 13 May 09 - 11:11 AM Our arrived yesterday. I sorta have the impression Dan would not want me to write a "review." How the heck am I gonna hold in how GOOD that CD was to hear in the car yesterday??? ?!?!?!? ~S~ |

Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: Janie Date: 13 May 09 - 06:16 PM Just now checking into this thread, Dan, and listening to "Katie's Song" I agree wholeheartedly with what others have said. Fine songs and fine performance! I"m not a musician, but this Mudcat crowd (with a considerable dose of encouragement from FSGW Getaway sessions) gave my voice back to me, got me singing again after years and years, and gave me the confidence to sing in public. ain't this place great! So glad you are a part of it. Janie |

He listened to every song and always had some kind words of encouragement. Thanks Spaw ... sorry buddie to spoil your reputation but that is the absolute truth !! Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!! From: olddude Date: 14 May 09 - 05:39 PM This is not a thread about a catter who did some forgettable songs. It is a thread about helping each other. That is what this place is about . Train song from folks talking about trains and pointing to great train music The old picker a song about no one - yet about everyone who ever played. Thank you Art you are a treasure for the idea . Waltz from folks talking about spring and bird watching - Going to Montana from catters discussing TV dish network. Every song except Katie's came from some master discussing something that gave me the idea. The thread is not about a homemade CD it is about people helping others. People caring enough to take time away from themselves to make someone they never met happy because he wanted to do something nice for his kids.. Then taking more time to listen and advise. Thank you (signing off now) Dan :-) |
Subject: RE: Thanks Catters - Olddude does a CD!!
