Subject: Can anybody help me find this song?
From: Popinjay

Hello,

I have been looking for this song for several years now, and I just can't find it. I once had a copy but then lost it due to a HD malfunction.

I do not remember the name of the song but I remember the story of the song (though not the exact lyrics):

The song is about a woman who walks by a cemetery and see three dead men and a big dog. They start to sing their tale to her and, while she is scared, she still stays and listens.

Within their song the men say that they were sailors on a ship and that one crew member had broken a witch's (or sea witch's?) heart and and that out of anger she tried to cast a spell on them and sink their ship. The first time they just barely survived because their captain knew enough magic to counter the spell (It was some sort of song magic--it was named but I don't know if it was banshee or siren or what...) and so they were saved. The second time they went to sea their captain did not have such knowledge and the witch took her revenge sinking the ship to the sea and cursing the men to the "gates of hell" until somebody was brave enough to listen to their song.

They had been there many years and many people had fled but the woman by having the courage to listen to their tale broke the curse and set them free.

It was a more interesting song than perhaps I am making it sound.

If anybody knows anything about this song from its title to where to find it to some exact lyrics I could try to look up I would really appreciate it.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and any advice would be appreciated.

Pop

P.S. It was sang by a female vocalist if that helps.

Thank God it wasn't sung by a dead dog.

Good luck, I'm hoping someone will come up with an answer for us both

Barry

I wrote "The Sea Witch" of Orkney but it is not this story.
The Girl (Janet Forsyth) rows out to the ship in a storm and saves the ship and the crew but is branded a Witch.Good article about her if you care to Google it.
