Any of the FoM Committee watching this?

With Get Well cards and messages from around the world, I figured somehow I'd become a bonafide worldwide phenomenon, but I'd never thought I'd go interplanetary! If I were from Planet Ahead, I'd have thought to sell advertising space on this thread, but I probably couldn't exchange currency from another planet, anyway. I just might give it a listen anyway.

Bob, you say you learned English off of radio stations? At least it doesn't sound like you tuned into Rap.

Welcome to Planet Mudcat.

Ignore last message. Joe must've eliminated Guest Bob from another planet, smoking cure and all. I don't know if he saturation bombed other sites or not, but thanks, Joe. You can even drop my last two posts if you deem it nescessary.

So wish we come over & join the fun and still haven't found a way to contribute from the UK.

Severn, we're still sending you positive thoughts for your recovery. The Cottage would be a good and peaceful place to recuperate, I can just see you lounging around on the lawns surrounded by our flora and fauna, being waited on hand and foot and cooking up crazy schemes with Richard! Hope you're still behaving yourself!

Paypal or Western Union, chance (put this in the other thread too) Paypal is very cheap, but slow, around 12 days. WU is very fast, in minutes, but expensive.

Max has a paypal account for Mudcat, why not PM him and find out more?

Love and hugs to Severn..a very gentle hug, of course... :0)

According to Paypal you can send money to anyone with an email address. I haven't tried to do that but I have sent quite bit to the States at various times without problem to a registered Paypal account.

Max: Can we use yours please? Or maybe Big Mick - I think he has one as well.

Karen's idea of having a bash over here is a good one. Are there any good organisers out there?

Blessings
Rhiannon

Severn has made many friends in the UK but, unfortunatly, we are fairly well scattered.
It's a lovely idea Karen and Rhiannon but may present some practical problems - however I feel that if we all bought a ticket for the Maryland benefit we could join in what I hope will be a great tribute.

Severn has a computer keyboard problem. His had a problem, and I offered him one, but he needs a female connection on the plug, whereas all the ones I am familiar with has a male... (the little [purple] one with 5 prongs in a semi-circular pattern. He is going to a couple places to see what they have.

Anyone familiar with that configuration?

(I'll see some of you at the benefit!~)

Severn's benefit got some nice coverage in the Gazette, a local paper, and we're hoping for a good crowd.

I don't know about recordings, Emma B, I'll look into it.

Thanks Peace for the kind words, but the Mudcat itself is really the friend to us all. It isn't everything to everone, but its something important to all of us, a way for like-minded folks to connect. Sometimes I expect too much of our mudcat friends for this reason, but mostly I'm amazed at the outpouring of support and self-less concern. (thanks, Max)

cheers,
chance

As for the article in The Gazette:

There were a few botched facts and misquotes. I awaited the ambulance in a chair, sitting up, rather than lying down on a couch, until a guest called 911. The normal sugar level for diabetics is NOT 200, which is instead the level that doctors don't want you to exceed. It also graciously makes me sound like I have a singing "career", rather than being a floor singer at various open sings and pub sing situations. A few other minor condensations exist, but I'm grateful and pleased and it was awfully nice of them to take interest in me when the concert was submitted to their calendar event schedule, something totally unexpected. And a very nice photo.

After a brief hiatus without a working keyboard, I cand send again, as well as recieve, so some long overdue updates and thank yous will be sent out soon.

Out-patient rehab on the left arm and shoulder areas and home excercise is going well, but will take some time and I'll be recieving some (insurance plan excluded, alas) Compression Shirts to help the burn tissue healing very soon. Pain is still a constant with some pain and sleep meds occaisionally needed.

Friends and family have helped greatly with driving, food, organization of things needed, music and lots of other matters, with far too many names to single out here. I have been driving short distances, but am not ready for a cross country long haul yet. There is still sick leave left and the insurance is still in force, but lots of docs take lots of co-pays and some exclusions always exist.

Doing well, I guess for the shape I'm in, and I thank all for the help and friendship extended.

All for now.

If you keep this up, Sev, Mick will have to find you a position with the Layabouts At Large.         Of course, you will have to give up the rehab - too close to work and that would break a rule or two. Enjoy your party!

There's a reference in the Gazette article to me exposing my newly (by about 4 hours) bald Chemo Head during my "set" (Caught in a photo by wincingdevil and posted on some back thread somewhere)
I'm usually singing one song at a time in a situation where it goes
around the circle, and eventually everybody becomes each other's opening act. My all too infrequent visits to Maidenhead Folk Club in the UK are my only guaranteed times to sing TWO songs in a row, which is the closest I come to a "set". Maybe someday I'll get booked for something beyond Disturbing The Peace, as I've gotten a lot better at it all, but the article tended to glorify me a bit.

Now I've been given something to live up to, so I'll proceed from here to either live it up, live it down, or some combination of the two. May my cooings live up to my billings.......

And may all of this help some billings to become payable......

Chance, I'll try to remember to get the Hissyfit info for you. They are an excellent duo from the UK and I even perform one of their songs from time to time. Whoever ends up with it will eventually consider themselves lucky. Some, but not all, maritime material is performed. If the Hissyfits, wear it!

I'm pretty much guaranteed a good time, Bruce, I hope all the others enjoy.

I wish all my scattered Mudcat friends could be there, and I could hear you all sing, as well....

Thanks again, everybody.

It's over and done, with wonderful performances by all the featured acts. Musical friends, family friends dating back from elementary school, college and high school days attended.

Best of all was a surprise unscheduled appearence by my daughter as a Father's Day surprise. She'd never heard me sing in a pub before.

And yes, I got to sing a few including a few requests for ones I hadn't done in a while. And a few pauses to figure WHICH WWII song or WHICH smuggler song. A mini-set by myself with help from Ship's Company Shantymen, with special guest former member Chip Hixson, who originally got me going to the shanty sings, back up on stage with them. I was only expecting two or three songs, but managed to end up diong a bunch. Some forgotten words on "Ain't Ging T Sea No More", but all in all, all went well. Also, I ended up getting to do "Copper Ore","Skipper Jan Rebeck", "Lifeboat Horses" and "Captain Courtney's Mistake" As I told the audience, if I seemed a little nervous, I'd just realized that it was my first EVER paying gig.

A regeneration song, "The Green Man" was sung for me by Steve Winnick (in Green Man mask) & Jennifer Cutting as today marks the solstice. Ship's Company sang a few of my own verses to "Donkey Riding" and Letter Of Marque did Al Grierson's "The Midshipman And The Maid",which I'd shown them. Lots of other personal touches were added, but it was all about my friends coming ouy and either experiencing or particioating in it all, some for the first time, some old hands and fans of some of the performers. A lot of people got to meet new friends or see friends not seen in a while.

I was overawed (Awwwwwwwww.......) by the support and friendship shown and the turnout. A better Father's Day or Solstice I could not have wished for. Someone had asked me about some of the folks I would like to hear, and quite a few were there. I remain amazed, possibly for life.

Ironically, I first got to know Chance from Solstice Parties held by friends years ago.....

Anyway, millions of thanks to all. I hope all enjoyed everything as much as I did.

'Twas a delightful afternoon! A good crowd, happy faces and non-stop music. Severn was everywhere, trying to "meet & greet" everyone....*grin*. He did a damn good job of it, too! And he got the hang of the mike pretty well...at least I could hear & understand him. (Ol' Fortunato had be encourage to speak up...by me, anyway. "Turn up your hearing aid", he says....hmmppfff!)

Anyway...Severn did those pretty LONG songs, and I am envious of his memory on 'em.... didn't miss till they threw him a curve, but he got thru it.

I saw a bunch of CDs & other odds & ends leave the "boutique" table, and that felt good.....

I expect there will be be a few pics posted....

It was a rollicking old time. And Severn, as he says, was in great form. Don't think I've ever heard him sing so much. Admittedly he had a grand backup chorus--Ship's Company and some other performers.   Chance and Suzette did two for us. And there some other groups and solos. I think there were 7 acts.

And the whole audience got a chance to belt out a whole bunch of choruses, as well as to buy merchandise including "Death By Accordion" T-shirts. I bought one--think they could have in fact sold more of those--how could we resist when Severn himself was modeling it?

Also I never knew there were three verses to " I do like to be beside the seaside".   And great verses they are.

Oh, Severn those verses to "Donkey Riding" were yours? Should have known. I was disappointed they weren't in the CD of 'Ship's Company I bought there.   They were the best verses of the song.   I think I got one of them.

The verses in question, which Ship's Company so kindly included:

Was you ever indiscreet
Where they do it in the street
Indiscreet in the street is a rare old treat
Riding on a donkey

Donkey Hotey, Donkey Shane
All them donkeys look the same
I've got donkeys on the brain
Riding on a donkey

Does that mean I've entered tradition?......

Or will merely be threatened with extradition?.....

This is Jan, Ron really has to get his own e-mail address instead of using mine! But that is beside the point, the point being: Severn's bash was good music, great company, lovely Guinness and yummy grub. When can we do it all again?

I can't wait for Ron to wear his Death By Accordion T-shirt in Sidmouth next year!

Anyway what I forgot to say was, and this is very important : does anybody know the result of the Formula 1 Grand Prix race at Silverstone this afternoon? I missed it because I was with all of you singing with Severn. Fox Sports, the nitwits, didn't show it live. If they had I would have been able to watch it before joining the fun at McGinty's, and they don't do a replay. I mean what kind of sports channel doesn't show live races and then doesn't show a replay for those down at'pub?

Hamilton 16th as Vettel wins British Grand Prix

CMC

Monday, June 22, 2009

SILVERSTONE, England (CMC) - Britain's Lewis Hamilton could only manage a 16th place finish as Germany's Sebastien Vettel sped to a magnificent victory in the British Formula One Grand Prix event yesterday.

Clocking one hour, 22 minutes, 49.328 seconds, Vettel won ahead of his Red Bull-Renault team-mate Mark Webber of Australia, to record his second win of the year.

Rubens Barrichello was third and fellow Brazilian Felipe Massa was fourth.

Hamilton, the reigning F1 champion with Grenadian roots, had started 18th on the grid.

"I gave it my all today. Despite fighting for the lower positions," Hamilton said.

With only nine points so far in the season, Hamilton is 11th in the drivers' standings, a whopping 55 off the leader Jenson Button (64) and Hamilton was happy he still had the support of the home fans.

"The best thing about this weekend has been the fans: they really gave me some consolation by cheering me on throughout the race. I would love to have given them a result to make them happy and my country proud, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us before that will be realistic," he said.

Championship leader Jenson Button's Brawn, who has won six of the eight events this year, struggled to sixth on Sunday.

Vettel took advantage of his team-mate Mark Webber being caught behind Brawn's Barrichello to build a striking early lead and in the end added to his victory at the Chinese Grand Prix in April.

So glad to see you haven't lost your (twisted) sense of humor, Severn.
So sorry I couldn't be at the big doings today, even 'virtually'. (Hard to be online when you're driving a stick shift on the interstate and have nothing but a cell phone at your fingertips.)

I still want to contribute to the Save The Severn fund, even if it means acutally buying some of your bad-pun poetry, my friend.

I'll check back to see if anyone has unsold stuff avaiable. But I'll prolly end up just sending more good wishes with a backup check, as I'm in the midst of MAJOR de-clutttering at my house right now.

Hang in there, Sev!

It was a great show, and rest assured that those of you who couldn't be there were remembered. There will be photos on Flickr, I understand, and I'll post the link.

We raised some money for our pal, Severn, and sold many of the items you sent, and the proceeds join the contributions you made through paypal and your checks.

There were a few items that were not sold and the current plan is to bring them to the Getaway for silent auction, unless it's a cd that Severn wants for his very own.

i wish you could have seen the smiles on his face as he moved through the crowd of friends, family and well-wishers.

If anyone plans to use my paypal for contributions from now on, please let me know the amount in advance through PM or email, to keep accounts straight.

thanks to all, you are a wonderful bunch,
cheers

Here is as email thanking the volunteers and performers and contributors to the benefit for Severn from his cousin, Kathie Mack:

"Thank you, all performers and volunteers for Songs for Severn, for making this fundraising event a great success yesterday! The audience definitely got their money's worth, and Severn -- as everyone could see -- was particularly pleased and touched. Today I deposited $1440 in Severn's account, all raised by donations at the door ($1070) and from the "Severn Boutique" ($370). When I called Severn to tell him the money was there, he said he would get in touch right away with the folks who provide the compression shirts that he has been directed to buy. Thank you for attracting the audience that helped to make this possible. You are wonderful. May you live well and prosper! All best, Kathie Mack P.S. If I have forgotten any performers or volunteers, please forward this email to them with my apologies."

This is in addition to the generous contributions of you Mudcatters who sent paypal donations and checks!

I heard from Kathie on the way home from seeing my daughter on Monday and $1000 worth of bills were paid by noon. Thanks for lightening both my burdens and my heart.

The infamous "Death By Accordian" T-shirts that Jennifer Cutting and I were wearing came from Catter leftydee, whose former Celtic band they represented. The Motor City Sidestrokers are his main project now, and their fine new CD sold to someone. Kendall, Jacqui, katlaughing, Hissyfit and others sent and donated lots of fine stuff and the performers CDs went out to a lot of bedazzled listeners who will be happy for life with their booty from the 'tique.
I couldn't spend too much time looking and keeping track, as if they caught me shopping for anything other than medicines, they'd have cried "Fraud!' and cancelled the show. Luckily, I'd a bunch of it already, because the temptation was definitely there. Get thee behind me, Satan! I've burnt enough already!

My joy from will never wear off or fade.

A Mudcat Moment, and a tip to people helping out other people in the future:

If you're sending items to help defray someone's cost and are sending your items to an area with a high Mudcat presence/infestation, it would help to also put your Mudcat handle with it on a piece of paper.

One of the people at the "Boutique" table was unfamiliar with a few of those who donated their wares and said they didn't know who Bruce Murdoch was until I said, "Peace, on the Mudcat" and they said "Omigod, I've got to get one!"

Mudcat can be another form of product recognition in the right circumstances from the good will you've generated under your handle in the forum or in Chat.
