I've noticed this mostly on Irish folk music. The writing credits are listed as (Cop Con). What does Cop Con mean, is it like Irish for "Traditional" or something? Is it an abbreviation, etc.?

avondalemusic@nfld.net

The Cliffs Of Baccalieu: Jack Withers. Cop. Con.
The Squid Jiggin' Ground: Art Scammell. Cop. Con.

I expect the folks at that e-mail address could and would answer your question.

I've seen it by other songwriters' names. Maybe it has something to do with copyright designation?

"Copyright Control" is used when the writer/composer is not represented by a publishing company.

oh, "copyright" good one. I looked it up and found the phrase "Copyright Control." I saw it after two songs: "The Ramblin' Rover" (Cop Con) / "Whiskey on a Sunday" (Cop Con). You get a lot more search engine results for "copyright control" than "cop con" -- I am still not crystal clear what it exactly means, as copyright are awful complicated, but I am happy to know what Cop Con stands for. THANKS.

It means that if you record the song onto an album, you then have to pay the copyright levy direct to the author rather than to a copyright control body (MCPS, AMCOS, ASCAP, etc)
