Subject: BS: Lost kitty From: katlaughing Date: 09 May 09 - 11:02 AM This may seem trivial compared to some of the other things we are helping with here on the Mudcat, but my brother's cats are his kids and we're having a tough time this morning and would appreciate any good thoughts, etc. There's not been much sleep this night past. A nasty outdoor cat has been trying to pick a fight with Cody for the past week. One of them, or both, tore the screen out of my brother's window last night and now my brother's cat, Cody, is missing. This happened while my brother was at a jazz concert in the evening. Cody is a beautiful, very shy cat who "found" my brother's home and moved in. I rarely see him because he is so shy. I *feel* he is hiding out under the mobile home, but so far no sightings. He is not the type who would cry out. I'll be going over to help in a little bit. Any thoughts, etc. happy pictures of him home and with my brother would be greatly appreciated! Here is a picture of Cody in the Middle, the white one with some markings and the bluest Siamese eyes! Thank you! |

Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty From: wysiwyg Date: 09 May 09 - 02:05 PM It DID seem trivial until you introduced the need, Kat, goodonya. Kitteh love is its own best connection. I give thanks for the strength of it and ask only that the owners follow their hearts to where the kitteh may be waiting, needing help to get loose to follow the connection from it's end. Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty From: katlaughing Date: 09 May 09 - 03:33 PM Thank you all, very much. I read your messages to my brother, over teh phone and he was quite touched. Amazed at the geographical range of folks who care. He is kind of numb at the moment, blaming himself for not shutting the window while he was gone. Cody is his most affectionate cat. I *think* he will show up when he gets hungry, as Spaw says. My sister did a meditation and doesn't hold out much hope, but I still feel it is early and this cat can hide like none I've ever known before and will not let out a peep. I've just printed up some flyers for bro to put up. I don't suppose it really means anything, but yesterday my dad would have been 92. Thanks, again. kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty From: Cats Date: 09 May 09 - 03:45 PM My cats are my children and it isn't at all trivial. If they are not around when it is time for bed I roam the fields looking for them and walk the lane calling for them. If they are not to be found I lie awake listening for them to call when they come in through the cat flap. Sending my love and kindest thoughts as do Bathsheba Everdeen and Isolde of the White Paws. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty From: wysiwyg Date: 09 May 09 - 04:07 PM A curious cat can so easily become a trapped cat. We can;t always go where they will go, to look. Don't think I'm kidding when I say that the next kitteh I go calling for will find me wearing a hearing-enhancer to hear it's weak mew of reply. These can be had way-cheap at any WalMart type store. In a pinch I've used the mic on my MP3 recorder, sometimes, that way-- set it on record and then wear the earbud, and you can hear so much more. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty From: Melissa Date: 09 May 09 - 05:56 PM Sounds like Cody chose your brother as his Person. He found the place the first time..he'll surely come back when he's done being freaked out by folks tramping around scaring him by saying his name. Kitties are pretty good at finding their way back home and if Cody's mind was set on running that bullycat away, he was going to do it. When he comes home, at least the cranky outside visitor probably won't be coming back to hassle him anymore. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty From: SINSULL Date: 09 May 09 - 06:29 PM I hate when Freddie decides to stay out all night. He has his fun and I wake up hourly to check and see if he is back. Under the motor home could mean up inside. He may have found a hiding place and will come out when he is ready. Poor kitty. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty From: katlaughing Date: 09 May 09 - 09:00 PM My *feeling* was right. We have had a sighting, under my brother's mobile home. My bro decided to look one more time before dark. There Cody was, licking himself over and over, may have an injury, but he is there. He has put out water for him, with fishie up on the porch to entice him out. It will take some patience with this cat, but that is how he came to my brother in the first place. Barring any terrible injury, he should be okay. Even if he gets an abscess from a bite I would think we could treat it quickly enough he will be okay. Thank you all very much...I *see* him inside my brother's house, now, purring to beat the band and lapping up all of the Tea & Sympathy he can get. May it be so! luvyakat |
Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty - Sighted! Now, if he'll just come From: KT Date: 09 May 09 - 10:00 PM Hey, kat! We just went through this last week with our kitten at work. Five nights and twenty-odd posters later, (and a lot of time spent worrying about hungry eagles), he came back home. I hope Cody will soon decide to come back inside, too. One comforting thought-If this is the way he came to your brother, then he must be quite comfortable outdoors, so will probably be able to fend for himself until he decides to come back in. "I *see* him inside my brother's house, now, purring to beat the band and lapping up all of the Tea & Sympathy he can get. " And clicking his heels together, (all four of 'em) saying, "There's no place like home!" KT |

Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty - Sighted! Now, if he'll just come From: Liz the Squeak Date: 10 May 09 - 01:55 AM Have you noticed that they always come back of their own accord AFTER you've spent money and time printing out the flyers and posters? My Max did that to me... lost him for 2 days, spent hours and hours getting posters ready, pinning them up in the neighbourhood, only to have someone say 'he's down here in my back shed and won't come out'... bless 'em. Good news on the location front, now you just need to sit on the porch and make a noise like a tin of tuna. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty - Sighted! Now, if he'll just come From: SINSULL Date: 12 May 09 - 12:41 PM Poor thing is probably afraid that the other cat is still in the house. Try Gerber's 1 Veal - has always worked for me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty - Sighted! Now, if he'll just come From: katlaughing Date: 12 May 09 - 01:22 PM Oh, I never thought about the stray cat being in the house! I don't think it did get in there as he also has three other inside cats; I think it was just Cody who went out rather than anybody in, but ya never know!:-) It was a real surprise as Cody is afraid of his own shadow; we had no idea he'd be so fierce. I have only seen brief glimpses of him as he runs to hide when I or anyone else goes over. He's the scardiest, shyest cat I've ever known. Anyway, Morgan and I got a have-a-heart trap, will give it to my bro this evening. And, the cat will have to make do with tuna or starve...no veal allowed in my house nor my bro's, Sins....that's gross!*bg* |
Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty - Sighted! Now, if he'll just come From: SINSULL Date: 12 May 09 - 01:31 PM The only time veal is allowed in my house is when a kitty is sick. Gerber's 1 is for newborns and for some reason even a "not hungry" kitty will go for it. Of course, then I have to fee it to the other three. |

Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty - Sighted! Now, if he'll just come From: katlaughing Date: 13 May 09 - 11:52 AM I don't think so, gnu!LOL This is becoming a comedy of errors. Got the trap, took it over, my Rog showed my bro how to set it up. So far, so good. Sets it up, cat goes in, eats tuna and leaves. WTF!? Bro calls in a dither, sets up cage, again, placing tuna in a slightly different spot, goes to bed. Calls this AM. It WORKED!! Wrong cat!! Some little half-grown neighbour's cat which he then let loose. Now he's really frazzled...poor bro...he will reset it this afternoon with the food in the right spot and bob's yer uncle, I hope!! Thanks! |

It's a mobile home, i.e. manufactured/trailer.:-) I know, Becca, I don't mean to make light of it. Cody has been AWOL since Friday night, that's a long time and a lot of sleepless nights. I have confidence it will work this time, though. My bro gets off work early today, so will have plenty of time to try it and be successful.:-) |

I think we're dealing with a freakin' Houdini. He has stolen the tuna, again, and escaped right before my brother's very eyes. The good news is he is on the front steps waiting as soon as my bro gets home AND, for the first time since Friday, he meowed at him, several times, so he must be getting tired of all of this, too. Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty - Sighted! Now, if he'll just come From: katlaughing Date: 14 May 09 - 11:34 AM LOL...I haven't seen it, Becca, but apparently it is a latch which keeps the gate up until the cat steps on the magic metal bar which is supposed to release it; apparently completely different from any other dicky latch thingies I've ever seen!**bg** |

Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty - Sighted! Now, if he'll just come From: GUEST,petr Date: 14 May 09 - 12:07 PM hey this happened with our Reavy.. (our 5year old Bengal, very lovely cat - very gentle never once scratched me and very tolerant with our 2 and 4year old girls) We went camping a couple of times last summer - even though we left plenty of food and mom came by to check on him - each time we went away he was gone for a few days. He was an outside cat and we have a cat door. Then we went away for the labour day weekend and he didnt come back. Actually he would come by occasionally and looking healthy and well fed, but he seems to have abandoned us for a house a few doors down. I guess he got a better deal there. I still put out his food for him but after a few months I got tired of feeding all the neighbourhood cats and locked the cat door. He still comes by once in a while but just to say hi. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty - Sighted! Now, if he'll just come From: wysiwyg Date: 14 May 09 - 12:32 PM he is on the front steps waiting as soon as my bro gets home AND, for the first time since Friday, he meowed at him, several times, so he must be getting tired of all of this, too We have one that goes off a short way also, when it's supposed to stay IN. After a day or two of catering to the hidden location, we move the food closer to the door and then, when it's time, we just prop the door open and make the food noises and smells just inside the door, and walk away. The cat is usually found, next, asleep on the nearest warm-spot. Sometimes I think they are like people (I remember my stepson for instance), who don't know how to say they're sorry but don't go away, either, and want to get back together somehow. Apparently cats have AFGOs, too. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty - Sighted! Now, if he'll just come From: katlaughing Date: 14 May 09 - 02:12 PM petr, I love Bengals! They are beautiful cats. All of my cats and my bro's cats are indoor only cats, except mine have a "chicken-coop" run outside my office window. My heart would be broken were I to lose any of them; been through that one too many times. I have had cats all of my life, most of them strays which had to be coaxed in some way. THIS is THE shyest cat I have ever, ever seen. My Kipling was so traumatised when we found him (someone really mistreated him!)it took him ten years before getting on the couch and sleeping on the bed. No one can pick him up, yet he will come up beside us on the bed and ask for a massage. CODY has obviously been even more traumatised, before finding my brother's. Like my cats, he has been an indoor cat since then, with short walks on a leash with my brother. The open door thing has not worked with him and necessitates the other cats being locked in the bedroom so they won't get out. My bro has been a little too impatient and nervous, but this cat is still a little whacked out. Today my bro will go get the other trap and try it. The humane society didn't sound at all surprised when I told them what had happened and that he thought it might be the latch. Becca, I googled it and this thread came up! Maybe I've penned a new phrase?:-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Lost kitty - Sighted! Now, if he'll just come From: katlaughing Date: 14 May 09 - 06:14 PM Folks, may I ask you to send some good thoughts etc. for my friend, Roger Curtis's, kitties, Cassie and Timmy, and his parrot, Toby, that they be kept together and go to a good, loving home? He passed away, unexpectedly, on Tuesday and his stupid family let his abusive-ex take over his apt. and everything including the pets. They should not be left in his care and he has expressed a half-hearted "guess I'll have to find them homes" which in his case, could be anything. Anyway, we have some folks there who are trying to see what can be done. At one point Toby was to come to my daughter when and if anything happened to Roger. That doesn't matter, we and the rest of his friends just want to *see* them together in the home of someone who will love them and care for them as he did, or at least close to it. Thanks for your help on this. So mote it be! |
