Hiya,

I've been listening to Alan Stivell's Tri Martolod on repeat for the last week, much to the chagrin of my boyfriend. But this is mostly because I've found that what I hear and what I read on the lyrics are two very separate things, so most of what I sing is "tri martolod ya-wua tra la la". Is there anybody who knows of a place where I can find some sort of phonetic transcription that I could read, so I could enhance (/pester) my surroundings with a correct version of Tri Martolod?

Any help would be deeply appreciated, I've been a Mudcat fan for years as this is the number one place for music exchange.

A quick search on Google yielded this:

And this here:

I was gifted an Alan Stivell CD which has him singing this a duet with Shane McGowan. I kid ye not!

And always a crowd pleaser:

From Son ha Ton, Per Kentel's valuable site of Breton songs. You'll find a French translation there.
On Diapason Turquoise, T.1, Presses d'Ile de France-2001, it's said to be at least from the 19th century.

Thank you for your swift replies!

I am however still very anxious about having to sing in Breton, me not being a Breton speaker at all, and I think, from listening and reading the lyrics at the same time, that there's a whole lotta altering the sounds when breton is spoken.- Anybody got a phonetic translation for the lyrics?

Thanks again!

The lyrics sung by Stivell are slightly different from those sung by Tri Yann - for example:

Tri Yann
Tri martolod yaouank (tra la la, la di ga dra) "tra"?

Stivell
Tri martolod yaouank (tra la la, la la la la la)

Such tiny differences are like many tiny differences in songs when sung by different performers.

You pays your money and takes your choice!

Cheers

I get that, but I still can't sing anything, because I am not a Breton speaker.- Anybody with a phonetic transcription so I can assume that I sing one version correctly? Please?
Thank you again
