Subject: Kendall's TV shows on MPBN
From: gnu
Date: 16 May 09 - 08:21 AM

From the thread re Kendall's new website, Kendall has agreed to allow us to see if MPBN will air and/or release (sell?) his TV programs.

From the other thread... "Kendall, regarding MPBN, if you are keen on the idea, I am sure some of the folks here might be able to organize an effort to investigate the best way to go about it."

Sooooooo, here's a brief start.

Brainstorming session re Kendall's TV shows...

An email petition? To whom... all of the executives/board at MPBN and the national PBS, newspaper editors in Maine, folklore society, arts council/society, storytellers' association....

Okay, I'll stop there and hope others will add to this "brainstorming list". Just remember, it's a list of ideas for future consideration... throw anything on the list, no matter it's merit, for later discussion.

Oh, BTW, nobody is in charge of this effort, except to say that whatever course is taken should have Kendall's full approval.

Brainstorming session seems to be goind a tad slow, soooo, I'll give it another brief go.

ahhhhhh... errrrrrrr... ohhhh (that one hurt)... ummm.... SINS creates a diversion by letting Seamus, after he has been sparyed by a skunk, loose at MPBN and jac sneaks into the vault and gets the shows. Then, Maeve smuggles them acorss the New Brunswick border in hanging veggie baskets and I make DVD copies for Mudcatters and sell them with the profits going to Mudcat (and a small portion to the Save a Lobster for Kendall Foundation). I simply title the DVD "An Evening of Bodhran with Gnu" and nobody at any Customs Department will ever look at it. Problem solved!

Anybody else got any ideas?

BRAINSTORM PEOPLE!

I can understand why Canucks are not posting... they are ALL out celebrating the long weekend in honour of Her Majesty, The Queen In Right Of Canada, Betty Too. Maybe we'll get more ideas tomoorow, after the hockey game.

From: Crowhugger

Is this particularly about running the shows again on MPBN, or any sort of re-release?

See, I'm thinking DVD sales. My mind's eye is thoroughly enjoying a posse of 'catters extolling Kendall's and the series' virtues on a late-night info-mercial. Down-homey comfortable backdrops, snippets of earnest yet charming remarks about how having the program is (almost) like being right there in the rooms when they were made. I can't be too specific not having seen the series on its first run.

Does someone here know if re-releases of music in this way are profitable ventures? I would think so, since the major production costs are done with, but I don't truly know.

So, I guess this is this where I duck before the verbal rotten tomatoes start to fly. But pleez, it's just brainstorming, so before you reach for that science project in your vegetable keeper and wind up to heave, repeat after me: Any idea is a good idea cuz it might spark something truly brilliant, or it might be truly brilliant when skilfully cut and polished!

I would like to see a series that was broadcast on your t.v. station 30 years ago.The show was "In the Kitchen" with songs and stories by Kendall Morse. There are many of us who would like to see this. He was nominated for a Grammy this year. This would be great to see on the air, or would it be possible to make into DVD format?

My email:
I think it is wonderful that you are airing Marshall Dodge's Maine humor program. He appeared on an episode of "In The Kitchen" with Kendall Morse - a true Maine tale about "Was there frost?". Hilarious and brilliantly done. Thirty plus years and I still remember it clearly. Marshall Dodge goes through every type of wood, its merits and difficulty of use...mesmerizing.
Any chance those shows still exist? Captain Morse recently was nominated for a Grammy. He is in Mass General, as I type, battling throat cancer.
He, I believe, has tapes of performances he and Marshall Dodge gave in local venues as well.
The Portland Press Herald and most of the local papers have covered the Grammy. Timing is perfect to resurrect "In The Kitchen" with the very best of Maine humorists in their element.
Thanks for your attention.
Mary

but many of us still would not get to see them...but perhaps if we were to promise to buy a certain number of copies they would find it worth their while to do the digitising and DVD making...i hope, i hope, i hope...

Another option is the MPBN's "Video on Demand" option..
if you look there NOW, there is a video available,
"So You Think You Know Maine...Celebrity Edition"
that DOES include Kendall Morse..here:
http://video.mpbn.net/video/1350149548/

Perhaps the best way for it to readch the most people
and maybe the easiest thing for the t.v. station to do
is to make it avaialbe in streaming...then we could each
pick it up...on our computers...

i recommend we offer to donate to the station....
to help them decide to do this..one way or another..

Kendall spoke of a storytelling festival on the show where he appeared
as a panelist on the "You Know About Maine" show (see link above)

so, as Gnu suggested (also above) perhaps the story telling enthusiasts would like to join in a campaign to request public t.v. to
bring back Kendall's shows...here is a link which mostly mentions story
teller john mcDonald...but which might be a way to research the story telling festival and any story telling associations which might exist.
http://journal.maine.com/lore/storytellers/

also check out these folks...http://moosetellers.ning.com/
Maine Organization Of Storytelling Enthusiasts (M.O.O.S.E.)
now there is a MOOSE lodge i would like to know more about!!

here is a time mag. article about maine storytellers.
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,949260,00.html

here is the golden raven--http://www.watier.org/Ron/goldenraven.htm

i think that as far as the Maine Public Broadcasting is concerned,
requests for kendall's programs might carry more weight, if they
come from people in thier viewing area. (who might be potential
donors and supporters of their stations) so i have tried to find
some local organizations (storytelling) who might "pitch" this to
their members, to join our campaign to bring back kendall's show.

Will someone please follow thru and contact these story groups?
thanks!

I followed the link. Kendall's series does not appear anywhere. But Marshall Dodge and Gordon Bok are listed.

another reply from Maine Public Broadcasting network..

Laurel,

Thanks for your interest in the classic MPBN program, "In The Kitchen". We are in the process of going through our video library and digitizing as much as we can so that we may not only publish it to our new online video player ( http://video.mpbn.net ), but to possibly make programs available to purchase and to migrate our library to a safe, more useful medium. "In The Kitchen" is definitely one of the programs that we want to showcase along with several other wonderful Maine humor programs. In fact, when you visit the online video player I invite you to search for "Downeast Smile-In" with Marshall Dodge. Also, Kendall is featured in the celebrity episode of "So You Think You Know Maine", also available for viewing at our site. We have found some other gems in the vault and want to share them with the world.
However, most of the surviving "In The Kitchen" episodes are stored at Northeast Historic Films in Bucksport. While MPBN does retain the rights to the programs, we have to pay a fee for labor to have programs transferred to a current medium. As budgets are tight we have chosen to focus on what is on hand in our library.
I would be very interested in talking with you about what MPBN could do in regards to working with Kendall. While I'll be away for a couple of weeks, feel free to respond and I'll try and communicate with you when I return.

Thanks,
Nick

I also called the NE Historic Film (at the Alamo Theatre--
do you know it?)"old film" and left a message with Jane Donnell,
who is the Distribution Manager. I also e-mailed her to find out
what the procedure is to digitize the footage, or release it to
MPBN for distribution. I will let you know what i find...and if
we can assist in the process. I will post the results here...

Sounds like all will take is money. Wonder what it will cost? I would think that labor would be the big expense. Let us know, Laurel.

I was briefly interviewed last Thursday by a man from MPBN and he said they want to do another program like "In The Kitchen" and he will get back to me.

Maybe I should tell him that I have DVDs of the whole series?
Problem is, I don't dare spread them around because I don't own them.

Here is a copy of the letter I sent to Charles Beck:

I'm still getting many requests for a re run of In The Kitchen which I hosted and co produced in 1980.
I understand that you have told some people that you no longer have the recordings, and that they are in the archives. I believe you also said there is a fee for getting them back?

I believe I have the whole series on DVDs if you would like to have them. I keep them for old times sake, and of course I don't spread them around because I don't own the property rights to them.

Let me know what you would like to do.
Kendall Morse

Odd that they don't put them back on. Cheap for them and, witha bit of advertising, lucrative really... for them.

Keep a copy of anything you send, Kendall. Those shows are a treasure, and they shouldn't get lost. In fact, if I were you I'd make a few copies now, for archival purposes.

And to be on the safe side, maybe I'd better hold on to those for you. ;-)

Seriously, do make an extra copy for yourself.

Warmly,
Dan
