Sam Lee with Ed Hicks and Michael Wright @ The Magnolia , East Dulwich , London SE22 9HA.

Friday 22 May 2009

This evening is a new departure for The Goose! We are returning to our roots with a traditional folk club format Upstairs at The Magnolia on Lordship Lane. Except maybe most folk clubs don't have such great food as they have here! We might even have a raffle ......

Sam, Ed and Michael will be doing two 45 minute sets, and the rest of the evening will be open to anybody who would like to sing or play traditional songs and tunes in the cosy informal setting of the Magnolia. If there's a chorus, all the better! There will be no mikes and no PA.

If you want to be sure of getting a spot, please email us beforehand or at least turn up early - doors open at 8pm and the live music will start around 8.15pm and finish around 11.15pm (or possibly when the last singer leaves!)

There is a late bar at the Magnolia with last orders at 12.30am - and the N176 night bus passes the door every half hour!.

Many of you will know Sam from The Magpie's Nest and from his work for the English Folk Dance and Song Society, based at Cecil Sharp House. Sam also appeared at the Goose with Lauren McCormick as one of the support acts for Dick Gaugah last year.

Sam is a singer, promoter, researcher, teacher and confessed die-hard enthusiast of the folk arts. Since swapping his career teaching wilderness survival and performing on the Burlesque Cabaret circuit to work in folk music, he has performed at many of the major UK festivals.

Since discovering folk music Sam has become apprenticed to the great traveller singer and storyteller Stanley Robertson who is passing on his vast legacy of Scottish ballads. He spends much of his time in between gigs travelling in the footsteps of Peter Kennedy collecting songs from the English Romany Gypsies, The Cumbrian Fell pack hunts and many other communities.

FRoots said: "Sam is the most accomplished and authentic interpreter of traditional English song to emerge in years"

Tonight Sam performs with banjo player and Magpie's Nest regular Ed Hicks and jaw's harp player Michael Wright. They have already performed at Islington Folk Club and will be playing at various festivals this Summer including Glastonbury, Whitby, and Sidmouth.

And a plea - if you like traditional music and you'd like to see this evening carry on, please come and support the Goose tonight as we will only be allowed to continue if enough people come!

Tickets £5 on the door, £3 if you do a floorspot. There's an incentive!
