Of course I made it up. It is a very funny video, but I'm sure that some of the humour( and certainly some of the reactions) is sparked by schadenfreude.
Why are some people so offended that some very good musicians, who did the folk club trail for years, have made good! In Buddhism 'Mudita' is the quality of joy at the achievement of others, rather than jealousy or ill will. Try it, it makes life brighter.
I posted that little fib to check those who were sniggering down their sleeves rather than laughing out loud, as I did, to the inventiveness of the film.
SoH are playing tonight at the Exmouth Pavilion, seats 500, sold out weeks ago, could have been 4 times that. No ticket, so will enjoy Topsham Folk Club instead. It sounds like some correspondents would wish SoH to still be doing floor spots at Topsham and Exmouth, and dreaming of what might have been. They've made it! be generous! Rejoice!

This was really hilarious and such a wickedly clever idea, brilliantly executed. Thanks a million for posting the link, Vic. It has been quite while since I have had such a good laugh!

However, on a more serious note, I'm wondering if the original film makers, from whose film this clip was "borrowed", would have a case for infringement of copyright and misuse of material ? The only reason I mention this is that I found another clip on you tube last night which seriously abuses and misuses recording of a song written by a friend of mine, which it turns out was used without requesting prior permission from the author, who has now alerted you tube regarding copyright infringement and requested that it is deleted forthwith.
I've sent him this link to cheer him up ! LOL

This is an unnatural thread. The backlash should have started by now. Joy - support - nitpicks - doubt - anger - sides - equilibrium: that's the way it is here. Will someone please pick a nit, it feels weird.

Well, the thread was started by someone who runs a traditional club, and has had posts from people who have disagreed with each other on previous threads.

I suspect people are reading more into the thread than was originally intended. Joan Crump is the Artistic Director for Sidmouth Folk Festival (and a Mudcat member).

As I already commented earlier on another thread, I am wondering how exactly the current Sidmouth organising committee feels about being likened to the 3rd Reich.

Top of my A-list of who might have produced this vid is someone scarcely likely to have collaborated with me, though you'd all have had my complete absence from proceedings categorically confirmed the moment the ridiculously-named "Zimmerperson" started flinging out wildly-off-beam accusations yet again about me, who he knows neither from Adam (nor Eve).

I don't actually find The Producers wildly funny either. But at least that was a Mel Brooks personal choice and not an unwarranted attack on someone who has striven long and hard to raise the level of tradarts programming here in England.

The evil of the Third Reich may be, to some extent, ceremonially diffused by appropriate humour. This doesn't do that - rather it lifts it into another context altogether and by doing do trivialises the deaths of millions. This is is not funny in the slightest - it is vile, and it is shameful.

This is one of the rare times I disagree with S O'P. Not on whether the thing is funny or not - the sequence has become one of the internet subtitle standards for whatever send-up you fancy - but the error was in making such a film in the first place.

Some events are beyond art, especially popular cinema, and re-writing them for anctors in wigs and costume was pathetic. It invites pastiche for the tastelessness of the original film.

'Some events are beyond art, especially popular cinema, and re-writing them for anctors in wigs and costume was pathetic. It invites pastiche for the tastelessness of the original film. '

Which events are you specifically referring to? Either way, surely revisiting such events as the holocaust, the rise and fall of the 3rd Reich etc through film and other art forms, is sometimes the only way to communicate the seriousness of such things to a new generation. History lessons and documentaries just dont do it for some people, and not having films like this will reduce the understanding of the events that could so easily repeat themselves.

Whether people should profit from such films is a different matter.

There are over a hundred Bruno Ganz as Hitler memes, audio and video snatchings from Downfall, the 2004 German film. What makes this one particularly distasteful is that it purports to represent people   known to us who are merely trying to run a festival, not a political campaign, fer chrissake. I mentioned The Producers before as just a bit iffy on the pastiche front, but that film was meant to ridicule evil through tastelessness. This is a step much further as it implies a lot more than shambolic lack of organisation (not that I would concede even this failing upon the present Sidmouth team).

It is the wrong way to satirise the shortcomings of music programming and should not have been made. But as it has been, I deplore the OP's decision to give it publicity.

So let's see: the story so far. Show Of Hands think its funny and the person running Sidmouth thinks it funny and so do lots of viewers judging by comments here there and everywhere, apart from Deirdre Spart and some person named after a garden creeper. Any word from the Bellowhead camp?

"Some events are beyond art" -

Good idea, but which ones, and who is to say? We probably need some sort of National Committee to issue licences to soi-disant artists.

Then we can weed out those aiming to make money from entertainments constructed of unacceptable material - child abuse and murder, warfare, rape, religion, domestic violence, unfair social relations, mining & shipping accidents and natural catastrophes and so on - backed up with lethal legal force.

Andy Hamilton informed us on Have I Got News For You last week that he was chided by clear-thinking Government minister Hazel Blears, who said that clever "wordsmiths" like him shouldn't go around offending people by deploying their fancy words.

Have you seen the whole film? I have: it's shocking, gripping, disturbing, strongly acted and filmed. The subjects are certainly not glorified: the message is very clear

But I still didn't mind the SOH Bellowhead clip. Not only is it funny in itself, but by taking the scene out of context it by-the-by reduces the original participants to ridiculous cartoon characters, no bad thing on a different level. But not how the scene works in the film.

It's back to that thing about the difference between intentionally giving offence and deciding to gratuitously take it. The latter is a self-important luxury.
