Subject: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: Mrs Banjiman Date: 17 May 09 - 05:20 PM I'm finishing off in the recording studio in the next couple of weeks and about to start the less exciting admin phase of getting CD number 2 out there. Although I was happy with the studio which replicated a 1000 of my first CD, I wondered if anyone out there has other recommendations of places to seek quotes for this business? (Or equally of any places to avoid like the plague!) Thank you, Mrs B (Wendy Arrowsmith) |
Subject: RE: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: Peace Date: 17 May 09 - 05:24 PM Do you want to have it done in the UK? |
Subject: RE: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: Mrs Banjiman Date: 17 May 09 - 05:30 PM Yes I do - I should have made that clear in my title. Sorry. To anyone picking up this thread...this refers to CD replication in UK only. |
Subject: RE: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: Banjiman Date: 17 May 09 - 05:31 PM ..... are you paying or am I? |
Subject: RE: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: Peace Date: 17 May 09 - 05:33 PM Did you do your own mastering of the CD? |
Subject: RE: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: Peace Date: 17 May 09 - 05:36 PM Sorry. The reason I ask is that very often the people who make the master compress the hell out of it. Whoever you get, make sure THEY don't do anything BUT what you want. Replication of the CD. Bruce |
Subject: RE: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: GUEST,Gary-The Hut People Date: 17 May 09 - 05:58 PM Hi Wendy, We had our demo done at Fairview Studios in Gilberdyke. They do loads of albums for all sorts of music and I would recommend them. Really nice people too. Good luck with it and hope to see you both soon. Cheers Gary |
Subject: RE: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: Herga Kitty Date: 17 May 09 - 06:51 PM We had ours copied by Bump studios because Les Sullivan used them for his CDs. We just sent the copy mastered by George Papavgeris, and the artwork. Kitty (PS, I thought I'd already sent this post, but it failed, so apologies if this comes in twice.) |

Subject: RE: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: Backwoodsman Date: 18 May 09 - 08:11 AM +1 for Bump Studios. They do what it says on the tin - and very well. |
Subject: RE: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: GUEST,Graeme, Brother Crow Date: 18 May 09 - 11:58 AM Another +1 for Bump, we had both our CDs done there... ...the only thing to remember is to proof your artwork properly, our first CD was printed too dark...but that was mainly down to our lack of understanding of the print process. Our second CD was spot on once we knew what we were doing!!! Graeme, Brother Crow. |

From: matt milton Date: 18 May 09 - 12:26 PM "..the only thing to remember is to proof your artwork properly, our first CD was printed too dark...but that was mainly down to our lack of understanding of the print process" that's interesting, because I work in illustrated book publishing, and I always adjust pictures so that they look almost too light on screen. In my experience, what you see on a computer monitor invariably prints out a fair bit darker. |

Subject: Replication Overage From: GUEST,Yossar Date: 09 Jun 09 - 01:04 PM I have a question that I hope isn't too non-related for this forum. We just produced a CD and went in for replication with a fairly large U.S. based company (to remain nameless for now). We had a couple of issues with them during the process (mainly with art proofs, etc.). The final questionable practice had to do with overage fees. I understand that it is fairly standard within the industry to charge for whatever overage (the number of additional units manufactured over your original order) occurs by the end of the process. The thing that didn't sit right with me is the fact that they ran nearly a 100 more digipaks than actual CD's. We're basically paying for 94 empty digipaks. I am told by the sales rep. that this is pretty standard as well. Does this seem right to you? |
Subject: RE: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: GUEST Date: 09 Jun 09 - 01:26 PM If I've understood you correctly, that's something that plenty of companies do NOT charge you for. I think it happens quite frequently, but a profitable company wouldn't charge you for it. How many CDs were pressed? I'm thinking if it was over 1000 that might be OK. but I'm willing to bet it wasn't, right? |
Subject: RE: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: GUEST,Duncan McFarlane (at work!) Date: 09 Jun 09 - 01:39 PM Birnam did all the repro of my 'Bed of Straw' solo CD ...and the McF band's highly acclaimed 'All Rogues & Villains' for which we got a five star review from Rock 'n' Reel (now rebranded as 'R2') and a top-ten album of the year accolade from the Telegraph's (now retired) reviewer, Colin Randall! That told me something... I KNOW we did a good job recording 'em, mixing and mastering in the studio - and Birnam made a great job of the repro thereafter - changing nowt! They were VERY helpful with regard to the artwork turning out just how we wanted it too! So I can't fault 'em! You've got those Cds, I believe, Wendy - let your own ears call it! Birnam will be doing our/my next repro, too! - cheers! - Duncan |
Subject: RE: CD Replication - any recommendations? From: Banjiman Date: 09 Jun 09 - 01:45 PM Thanks Dunc, we've gone with Bump again actually. They did Wendy's first one and we had no problems..... and this one is MUCH better from a sound recording/mixing/ production point of view. (I would say artistically as well...... but then I'm biased!) They seem to have quite a few other satisfied customers looking at the thread. Thanks for your contributions. They certainly didn't charge us any "overage fees".... I never did hear of such a thing! Paul |
