Subject: Review: Dave Apollon From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 18 May 09 - 01:10 AM This is one of those little gems one finds when least expected. I was watching TCM this evening when a 1937 Warner Brothers Vitaphone short entitled Dark Eyes came on. It starred Dave Apollon who was amazing in that he played virtuoso mandolin ( a Lloyd Loar Gibson F), violin, tap-danced, ballroom-danced and did comedy. He also conducted the small orchestra which featured a Hawaiian lap-steel player. But his mandolin playing was what grabbed me: he played Gypsy music, jazz and '30's popular songs. So I googled him and here's what I got. http://www.dawgnet.com/acd_html/artists/apollon.html Check him out. Seamus |
