I've just heard that Tuesday is John Sheahan's 70th birthday. And the Dubliners are still going strong despite losing Luke and Ronnie. What an inspiration! Happy Birthday, John.

Click here for a video of André Rieu & John Sheahan playing fiddle together. They look like they're having a grand time.

Don't forget that they lost Kieron Bourke as well, even if it was a long time ago,Cobber ! (Tin whistle and vocals on lots of early Dubliners numbers). Anyway,Happy Birthday John---seems like being Tee-total was a wise move !!

From The Dubliners Live at The Albert Hall London, LP MMLP44 1968, sleeve notes.

Beneath John Sheahan's bushy chin
He hides a flute and mandolin!
But when our John is asked to play
His fiddle's never far away.
And play! The man will play you any
rom Zozzimus to Paganini.
No gargle ever wets his lips
(Except unalcoholic sips).
Though up and down OUR elbows go
When John's goes up, the tunes will flow!
With solemn face and twinkling eyes
His long bow sweeps draw praising cries:
A touch of tear-jerking vibrato
And a final, cheeky "pizzicato".

Jim McLean

Happy birthday!!

It's Ciaran Bourke actually, and they also lost Bobby Lynch, fine and well loved musicians all.

Talking about the EFDSS on another thread, they had The Dubliners to play at Cecil Sharp House many years ago, on the LP recorded at the time Ronnie remarked what a fine place it was but there was no booze.

John was in the same class at school as Paddy Moloney and also two brothers also fine musicians, Liam and Leon Rowsome. I might have got one of the last two mixed up with Leo Rowsome. Not the most imaginative people when it came to naming sons by the looks of it. :-)
