speaking of radio shows, JT Oglesby, my good buddy with the flaming frets, will be doing a live, in studio broadcast this Sat. May 23 at 8.00 pm Central D.T. on WKMS-FM out of Murray, Kentucky... this station has online streaming for those interested and out of 'earshot'.... maybe some kind 'catter' can add a blue link to make it easier to hook up... have a good time JT, and make me proud... don't break anything....

thanx Bobad.... at one 'point' about a couple of months back I was sitting out on a back porch near Marion, KY... sharpening gramaphone needles with sandpaper... it worked...
I was able to play an old Count Basie 78 of St.Louis Blues (Fats Waller) and record it to digital format...

I might just use the intro scratchy sound one day if I get itchy for an idea... like 'don't share needles'

we've come a long way baby...

Good for Jayto!

What is the format of the program segment? Is it an interview with JT as well as Jayto playing his music?

Also, would someone please post the hour this radio program airs by US regions (and British time) as was done for Bruce's recent radio interview?

I'd do it myself but I'm not confident that I would post the right times.

Hi yeah it is going to be earlier in the day. i have to be at the stuido by 11:30 am but I am not sure what time they are puttin me on air. It is a live in studio performance and interview. I am going to have Tommy Oliverio from the band Bawn in the Mash playing fiddle and mandolin with me. I am also having Johnny (Keys) Sheldon play accordian, washboard, and spoons with me. They are both unreal musicians. If I get more info before the gig I will post it. Thanks Ron for posting it.

an 8 second delay is common for talk shows....
but 8 hours ? you bad,,,,

they likely need time to do sound, warm up, record, then assemble the pieces for broadcast.... that's my guess...
we'll soon find out..

Hi to Johnny...tell him to leave the djembe at home, ha, ha
got a cool pic of him at the KFMF... R.

JT's 20 May 09 - 09:56 PM comment indicates that he's not sure when his radio segment will air.

I'm sorry about that since it we don't know the time it'll be on, we probably won't hear it.

But I know you'll make us -and yourself- proud, JT!

Best wishes,

Azizi

and chewing gum at the same time ?

I look fwd. to what you cook up this time out, JT... That station plays some good music on their folk/roots program... I remember leaving Nashville in a hurry, heading for the KY State line, dialing across the radio for something I could relate to at the moment.. about 20 minutes into KY.. it got calm again and I found WKMS, they were playing some fine music... I recall something by Sam Bush that I hadn't heard... it was a nice welcome.... you're in good company..

Good on you Jayto. I'll try to tune in if I get the right. I believe that would be 12:30 PM tomorrow here in the Eastern(US) time zone.

Now for a bit of pedagogic thread drift addressed to Ron. What was the Fats Waller connection to "St. Louis Blues"? Was he playing with Count Basie's Orchestra on that 78? Was this a different "St. Louis Blues" than the one written by W.C. Handy? Different arrangement?

Neil, you're absolutely right... it was WC Handy.... I got my giants mixed up again.. thanx for noticing..... I'd like to try that out with 2 guitars sometime...and keep one of them close to the original left hand descending chordal thing.... JT can do the melody.. he knows it well.. but it's more complicated than it seems at first glance... R.

No problem Ron. I thought I was missing something. Now as to whats really important, I'm looking forward to listening to Jayto tomorrow. I think guitar, fiddle and accordion are a great blend and it takes a confident and accomplished guitarist to surround himself with other strong instruments.

Thank ya'll. I am going to be beat man lol. I just got back with a gig with Mark Collie. He had some country hits in the 90's. Most people remember him from that movie The Punisher. He played the singing hitman in it. It was a great gig. He is a great writer and excellent performer. I got lost and showed up just in time to tune his guitar. Believe it or not there was a minor crisis going on involving tuning his guitar. Noone had a tuner and Mark had not shown up yet. As soon as I arrived they all rushed me wanting my tuner. I forgot mine at home as well. So I took his guitar and grabbed the land line phone. The dial tone is an F note so I used it to get his guitar to standard tuning lol. It is 3:00 am and I have to leave here at 8am to get to Murray in time so I am going be a tad tired lol. I am going to the Lowertown arts fest to play after the Radio Show. Well thanks to everyone that is tuning in.

Oh yeah I am working up a version of St.Louis Blues with my accordian player. I love that song.

Cya
JT

cool, what did we do before tuners and phones ?
My buddy Fred has perfect pitch and can throw a tuning on a guit. A-440 if he has to..

I used to tune by ear, but it was giving me a headache so I switched over to my fingers to turn those tuning pegs.... R.

It sounded great! Kept locking up at first and I'd go out and back in. But the third time was the charm and from "Dark as a Dungeon" on I had no problem. The mandolin complimented the guitar quite nicely and I really like the mining songs. My mom's father was a lifelong coal miner from around 1914-1969 so I like hearing those songs and appreciate Jayto carrying on that tradition.

no problema..BM.. I recorded it to minidisc.. can make CD copies later...

now I'll be able to blackmail the young gun when he gets famous

seriously, working on 'the fly' like that is a challenge, getting the levels right, the tuning thing with the humidity... but they did really well... and the main thing is that it's great to witness that kind of energy and enthusiasm... JT's blazing his own trail while respecting and promoting the roots and rich musical heritage from this part of the country and state... and that's how the thumb picking style developed way back when... just folks trying out things that hadn't been done, open to new ideas and making their own sound... there's a multitude of pickers out there today that owe a great deal to that 'pioneering spirit' on the instrument...
L'il brother tells it straight and has the chops to back it up..
Good singer too, he must gargle with coaldust and slag... and the writing is solid... not what you'd expect from 'another pretty face'

it's a real treat to be working together on this new CD... we keep each other alert....   good one Jayto....

Thank ya'll I am glad you enjoyed it. I had a blast doing it. I think Mark is going to have me back on sometime. When he does I will let you all know. I could have gone all day I enjoyed it so much. Tommy (the mandolin player) is an excellent musician. He wasn't real familiar with the songs but I thought he did great. Next time I promise he will knock your socks off. Now that he is getting the feel of my playing and the songs he will kick it into overdrive and really shine. After the radio show we went to the Lowertown Arts Festival in Paducah. It was great all knds of artists showing off thier art on the streets while musicians were sitting around playing and all. They had 2 stages with bands going. It was a great vibe and a very nice day to have it (though it was a bit hot but hey it is Ky). I have some pics from the radio show I took and I will post them on my myspace and then put a link up so ya'll can see them. Tommy's band is call Bawn in the Mash you can find them on myspace and youtube. WKMS is going to play the CD Ron and I are working on as soon as we are finished with too. I was so exhausted from last night (going to bed around 3 am and waking up at 7am) that I headed back before Bawn played at the arts fest and before the after jam sessions. I appreciate it everyone and will let you know about pics and the next radio show.
thanks
JT

ps 'gmail' can work with up to 25 kb and it's free....
