Subject: Tech: 'Access denied' From: GUEST, RIchard Bridge via Shadowsurf Date: 20 May 09 - 03:57 PM Is anyone else gettin "access denied"? Is it the mudcat blanking me, or is it my ISP barring the mudcat? |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: VirginiaTam Date: 20 May 09 - 04:09 PM I can access from home as usual. Don't know about work. Essex County Council upgraded the filter so it is now blocking just about everything on the internet. Do you have broadband? Have you reset you router lately? |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: treewind Date: 20 May 09 - 04:10 PM It's (or was) almost certainly an internal error in the Mudcat system. Clearly it's gone away now, but they often have little hiccups like that. I often see "disabled by system administrator" or similar and it comes back a few seconds later. Maybe Max, Joe or a clone is making a configuration change that can't be done while we're in the middle of using it. If your ISP was blocking it you'd most likely just get a "can't connect" display from your web browser. Anahata |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: Jeri Date: 20 May 09 - 04:32 PM Try again, Richard. |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: Richard Bridge Date: 20 May 09 - 05:04 PM Back now thanks all. Thanks also to Max, Joe, and Jef if they acted on my emails and did something. I was out for several hours. It was not router - router was behaving normally and I have not re-set it now. It might have been ISP - I have had no response from them. But somehow it LOOKED like a Mudcat error message. Don't ask me to put my finger on exactly why. Some of the proxies I tried were getting the same message - but some were not. In all cases I tried the normal route immediately before the proxies and found I was "denied". Maybe somewhere in the globe the cock has crowed twice (just a joke, for the religious amongst you). Virginia Tam, try Shadowsurf - it was consistently the fastest of the proxies I tried, and it let me post too which many did not. |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: VirginiaTam Date: 22 May 09 - 02:50 AM Thanks RB. Tried it yesterday and Shadownsurf is also blocked by the ECC filter. Blast. What I need is a legitimate job related need to be permitted access to Mudcat. Anyone got any ideas? I am stuck out at Record Office and mobility prblems prevent me going into town at lunch. Used to spend the half hour to an hour Mudcatting. Now it has been taken away, I am just continuing to work. No break at all. Bleagh. |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: Richard Bridge Date: 22 May 09 - 06:00 AM If you just want to read, you could try proxify. But it would not let me post anywhere. If you google (can you access google?) "proxy server" you will find HUNDREDS of them. ECC can't have blocked the whole internet apart from permitted sites can it? |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 22 May 09 - 07:17 AM Ms. TAM
If you need the job - and they have blocked your access at work - do NOT use a proxy from work.
Sincerely,
Your Mudcat posting record shows times that were not half hour lunches. |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: Richard Bridge Date: 22 May 09 - 07:38 AM However, Garg, can ECC hack the 'cat like you can? And if VT posts as guest via a proxy then the cat won't show the times and ECC won't know the visits, unless they compel the proxy to hand over records, and if different proxies are used then that won't help them much either. |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: GUEST,Jon Date: 22 May 09 - 11:21 AM The ECC will see the use of the proxy(s). I wouldn't have thought it need matter much which sites are visited from there. An employee is bypassing/attempting to bypass the ECC system. |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: Joe Offer Date: 22 May 09 - 12:53 PM I didn't get your e-mail, Richard, but I found out through this thread. One of the volunteer moderators fixed the problem for you. Most access and login problems are on the user's computer. If you get an "access denied" message, it's a problem on our end that we have to adjust. I'm the one most often on duty and the one with the e-mail that's easiest to remember. I'm also pretty easy to find in phone directories like switchboard.com and 411.com - I'll be the only Joe Offer in California. Sometimes, e-mail from Mudcatters gets routed into my Spam folder. If you want to get hold of me, make sure "Mudcat" is part of the subject title of your e-mail. -Joe Offer- joe@mudcat.org (530)878-8419 |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: Richard Bridge Date: 22 May 09 - 01:38 PM Thanks Joe. I know there is only one you, but I'm amazed there are no other Joe Offers in the whole of California. Jon, that will only be true (surely) if the ECC logs and identifies all outbound destinations, won't it? |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: GUEST,Jon Date: 22 May 09 - 02:00 PM It would depend on what they log, yes. My own (perhaps wrong) assumption as an employee would be that they could and they might be doing. As far as I understand it, companies tend not to take kindly to systems being bypassed and my own feeling is better to be safe than sorry. |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: Richard Bridge Date: 22 May 09 - 02:03 PM Agreed with that. Big Brother is watching you. |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: Jeri Date: 22 May 09 - 02:11 PM I've worked places that DID monitor all websites accessed by employees and what computers were used. I know, because I got along well with the IT guys (I was the office computer geek) and one time they showed me the log. It's about people goofing off at work, sure, but it's also about people doing illegal things from the company's servers. |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: VirginiaTam Date: 22 May 09 - 02:40 PM To others - I am not going to bother with asking for access because the ISIS team will just say that I need to take a break from the computer anyway. So I will not be accessing Mudcat from work unless they relax the filter. Gurgly- I don't have to explain anything to you so I am not. Take a moment and think about why I might not have been at work during some of those postings. Use your imagination or actually read my posts. You might gather a lot. Try not being such a nasty SOB. |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: Joe Offer Date: 22 May 09 - 02:55 PM Gurgly tries to help, but has a hard time saying things without an "edge" to them. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: robomatic Date: 22 May 09 - 03:52 PM I was getting it at work but not at home. Haven't checked yet to see if it has corrected, I played hooky from work rather than have my mudcat blocked! |
Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: Joe Offer Date: 22 May 09 - 04:21 PM I was getting it at work but not at home This could be the start of a scandalous discussion... |

Subject: RE: Tech: 'Access denied' From: Mr Red Date: 03 Jul 09 - 12:44 AM a friend has this on Talktalk. It was fine once, but this has crept in. It could be updates on the firewall but it is annoying. |
