Subject: Gryphon Reunion Gig - London 6 June From: GUEST,Blowz sans cookie Date: 21 May 09 - 05:47 AM This may or may not be known about already, but the 70s band Gryphon (all original line-up) are doing a one-off reunion gig at Queen Elizabeth Hall at the South Bank Centre in London on Saturday 6th June. I can't go, unfortunately, as I'm still settling in a new nervy rescue collie, and trips to London mean overnight stays for me. However, I'd have loved to have dusted off my orange caftan for this. For fans of Midnight Mushrumps ... I'm betting it'll be a fantastic night |

Subject: RE: Gryphon Reunion Gig From: Jack Blandiver Date: 21 May 09 - 07:17 AM I saw them supporting Yes on the Relayer tour at Newcastle City Hall - I bet there's somewhere on-line that'll give me the exact date as well... Sure enough: either 15th, 16th or 17th of April 1975 - so I would have been 13. Was I impressed? Of course, but not enough to buy their albums... Whatever they were doing I remember thinking Gentle Giant did it better! |
Subject: RE: Gryphon Reunion Gig From: SteveMansfield Date: 21 May 09 - 08:45 AM Here's a link - http://www.gaudela.net/gryphon/ I'd love to go to that gig (but we're already booked for playing ourselves that night). Let's hope they enjoy it so much that a small tour ensues, perhaps even bringing them Oop North, Manchester way would be nice ... |
Subject: RE: Gryphon Reunion Gig From: Ross Campbell Date: 21 May 09 - 10:36 PM Saw them at the Marquee at the launch of their first album. Brilliant bunch of musicians. I think they were all still at college at the time, absolutely amazing talents. Ross |
Subject: RE: Gryphon Reunion Gig From: Jack Blandiver Date: 22 May 09 - 08:18 AM absolutely amazing talents It might be worth mentioning here that Brian Gulland has a distinguished career in fine folk music taking in Malicorne and The New Scorpion Band on the way... Though I still remember him as the hirsute bassoon player in Gryphon - a band who once appeared on Blue Peter (those were the days!) introduced by John Noakes as the Medieval Slade. Seminal stuff! Can't seem to find any of their live / TV stuff on Youtube, alas - but there is a BBC Session CD at Hux - http://www.huxrecords.com/cdsales27.htm And if you like Gryphon you might appreciate the Prog Medieval Stylings of Gentle Giant... |
Subject: RE: Gryphon Reunion Gig From: GUEST,ifor Date: 22 May 09 - 12:25 PM Ah ,Gentle Giant? The drummer ,John Pugwash Weathers, lives in the Swansea valley .But I remember him as the drummer with the Eyes of Blue...one of the best bands I have ever seen. Ifor |
Subject: RE: Gryphon Reunion Gig From: Jack Blandiver Date: 22 May 09 - 12:52 PM Eyes of Blue. Much Respect. Both Pugwash and Phil Ryan served in The Mandband of course, though maybe not at the same time... |
