Subject: BS: Kendall's bad news From: jacqui.c Date: 21 May 09 - 07:58 PM We've just got back from the hospital where Kendall was due to have further treatment to his damage vocal cord. When the surgeon was about to put more filler in the right vocal cord he noticed a lump on the left vocal cord. Further examination showed that there was a growth on the left vocal cord which seems to be a carcinoma in situ. A deep biopsy has been taken and we will, hopefully, get the diagnosis by the end of next week. In all probabilty this will entail further laser surgery to excise this new cancer and then further reconstructive surgery to try and improve the voice quality, which will deteriorate as a result of this surgery. Needless to say, we are both devastated by this latest news, as is Kendall's surgeon, who has become a friend. |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news From: katlaughing Date: 21 May 09 - 08:57 PM It's obvious that all the good thoughts and prayers are worth zero. I know you are angry and feel devastated, but think..if you had NOT had all of those good thoughts and prayers, you might not be here. There are always worse alternatives and always more than an "either/or"...third and fourth alternatives, etc. The Kendall I know and love has a strong faith in the Great Spirit, as do I. You can make it through this, if you choose and with Jacqui there I think you'd better choose or else! (Hope that got a small grin out of ya, at least. Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news From: Dan Schatz Date: 21 May 09 - 09:39 PM You're right, Kendall. The prayers and good thoughts and wishes don't change anything. You still have cancer, you still have to deal with the damage, and it still stinks, completely. All the prayers and the good thoughts and the best wishes do is tell you that you don't have to go through any of this alone. They tell you that as much as we all love your singing and storytelling, that isn't why we love you. (In some cases, actually, it's the leather jacket, but I for one like you as a person.) They won't take away a single ounce of suffering, but they can let you know that the suffering isn't all there is, and there are those among us who will walk with you - Jacqui most of all, but she is not the only one. It's bad news, yes, and I'd be thoroughly pissed if I were you - at life, at God, at the universe, at my body, at whatever and whomever I could find to be pissed at. You've earned the right. But on the other side of despair and anger is love - and you are deeply loved by more people than you know. You don't need to get there today, or even soon. It's all right. Our love and friendship will be wait for you. Dan |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news From: Stilly River Sage Date: 21 May 09 - 09:47 PM Kendall, read the article Amos linked to. I've been listening to that series all week, and now I see the reason why--it was to chime in as one more voice to say you can get over this, just take one day at a time and don't waste time looking at what you had, look at what you have now and what you want to have in the future. That's all we can ask of you. In the meantime, your friends at Mudcat and elsewhere are keeping you in their thoughts and prayers, and there isn't a damned thing you can do about it. Except get better. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news From: Janie Date: 21 May 09 - 09:54 PM Kendall and Jacqui, I can and nothing to what has been said so far, other than to strongly second Dan's post. Prayers and good thoughts may not make a disease go away, but love does matter. You know that but that knowledge is just hidden from you right now by what I understand is in many ways devestating news, particularly in view of your expectation that you were going to take another step toward restoration of your voice. I think you know just how much you are loved, both of you. And Kendall, you have Jacqui at your side now, unlike the first time cancer was discovered, to walk very, very closely beside you. When you are ready, let this precious knowledge exist beside the anger and deep, deep disappointment. I am grateful that the carcinoma appears to be in situ and fully contained. I love you for who you are, not for your voice. Janie |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news From: SINSULL Date: 22 May 09 - 07:58 AM So...after a few Fucks! Shits! Sons of a Whore! and some tears, I settled down and realized that today is not a whole lot different from yesterday. The "What is": Kendall's voice is no worse than it was on Monday. Kendall may still get it back. As to the positive thoughts not helping, I see just the opposite. Two months of looking for Ezra, comforting Meghan, and worrying 24/7 have taken their toll. This growth is at least partially due to all that stress. So, for now, rant, rave, throw things. DO NOT kick Jacqui or the dog. Get all the frustration and anger out. And then we start over. But not at the beginning - the experience you have with the first tumor puts you light years ahead on treating the second one. Let us know when to re-light the candles. Mary |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news From: catspaw49 Date: 22 May 09 - 07:59 AM Dan came along and Janie and said what I was thinking as well. I see Bill and others, not surprisingly, agree with them too. If you didn't get it Kendall, then let me phrase it in a different way...... Fuck You........... It don't matter a fat rat's ass whether thoughts and prayers heal or not. They are though, the tangible proof that you have loyal and caring friends who love you......and how dare you tell them otherwise? You have the right to feel pissed over the cancer and all but you have no right to tell these folks that they don't matter........because they do. And you know what? They obviously aren't going to let you remain in that present mood because it takes a lot more dumbass behavior than even you can provide to shake their love and friendship. So wallow around awhile and then get up and apologize to those fine folks who love you for the man you are rather than anything you do, have done, or ever was. They don't care. They love you. I thought that any asshole could see that but I may have been wrong. All those good wishes and prayers are the proof of their love and care. If you can't see that or can't do that, then what you can do is kiss my ass.....and I just farted. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news From: jacqui.c Date: 22 May 09 - 02:12 PM Thank you all of you. I love you all. I think that this hit us harder because we went to Albany on the hope that there might be some improvement to Kendall's voice as a result of the procedure. Those of you that have seen Kendall in the past few months know how much of an improvement there had already been. Instead of that improvement we were told that he could lose some of the voice he has now and that really hurt. I think that having to tell Kendall the bad news when he was out of recovery was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. He still thought that the original operation had been carried out and the look on his face when I told him that it hadn't, and what Dr Shapshay had found, was one I never want to see again. We were staying at the house of friends fairly close to the hospital and had the house to ourselves as they were away overnight. That was a blessing as we both needed some space to deal with this. Now he has to have a CAT scan of his neck next Tuesday and then wait for the results of the biopsy, we're told at the end of next week. In the meantime we're looking on the web to see what information there is and whether there have been any new treatments that might be a bit less invasive. We will both have our reactions, of course, but we will get past that and deal with what is. The one good thing was that, if he had not had this procedure, this cancer was in a place where it would not have been easily seen - it didn't show up on the exam that Kendall had about a month ago. hopefully, because it has been found early, there may not be so much damage. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news From: kendall Date: 22 May 09 - 02:16 PM Spaw, you bastard! This is the first post of yours that has made my eyes leak. Folks, I never said that you don't count. What I meant was, praying for someone else doesn't count. As the article Curmudgeon posted said, there is not one bit of evidence that prayers for someone else work. Sure I believe in the Great spirit, but I'm a Deist. I'm mad as hell that it created tobacco, and that I got addicted to it.I quit smoking 13 years ago, and this appeared 4 years later. I'm tired. I can tolerate the despair, it's the god damn hope that's getting me. There is a photo on our bathroom wall of a penguin covered in oil walking up the beach and the caption is: FUCK IT, I'M GOING HOME. I know just how it feels. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news From: gnu Date: 22 May 09 - 02:24 PM Well! At least there is a bright side, somewhat. And, with all the good wishes and Spaw to cheer things up, it's already taking an upswing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news From: gnu Date: 22 May 09 - 02:26 PM Oh... there you are Cap'n. We all know you didn't mean ity that wat way, Kendall, but Spaw needs some kinda material to work with. |

Instead it turned into more of the same old shit. At least this time, they know exactly how to treat it - no screwing around for a year with radiation, for example. And a doctor who puts his diagnosis in writing! Wow. You're going to be OK. Now if we could only improve your disposition... Mary |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: VirginiaTam Date: 25 May 09 - 12:14 PM Oh I agree. I took a pack of Wrigley's gum (yellow pack) from local store when I was about 6 years old. My mom marched me back to the store and made me own up to what I'd done. I was terrified. And I did the same thing to my son when he did pocketed one caramel from Brach's pick and mix counter. Was that terrible? No. I think both events added to my understanding of childhood experiences and lessons and the ability to forgive myself. |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: Ebbie Date: 25 May 09 - 01:47 PM I never filched anything from a store- one of the things my mother got firmly across to her kids: Don't touch that - it's not yours. When my daughter was four and "safely" out of the store, she opened her pocket wide to me and said proudly: See? Inside was nestled a canday bar. I first explained the crime then took her inside to tell the clerk what she had done and promise never to do it again. She didn't cry but she was a bit pale around the gills. She has since said it made a great impression on her. But sometimes the store's reaction is counter productive, I think. When my nephew was four he picked up and pocketed an apple from a display outside. I saw it and followed the same procedure I had used with my daughter. But the grocer said, Oh, that's all right, Mama. He can keep it. |

We were about half an hour away. When they got back it was clear to me that something had happened.....thye had stolen make up from Body Shop. I called all the mums involved and told them what had happened anx drove penny back to Guilford to the store and the manager said ....IT DOESN'T MATTER .....! I looked at her and said it certainly does matter and pointed out she had the right to call the police -- my daughter went white = gave back the makeup and never stole again - to my knowledge |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: Janie Date: 25 May 09 - 08:27 PM We are talking about lessons in integrty, here. (Boy Kendall, has this thread morphed - but not unrelated - one of the reasons you are so beloved is because of your integrity.) Thing is, integrity is multifaceted, and it seems to me, is no longer the norm. Because it is no longer taught within the context of the greater society. Cash register honesty is important, but it is a small piece of a much bigger pie. These days, what is legal is considered to be integrity, but integrity goes well beyond what is legal. Business values that posit that the only loyalty is to the stockholder or corporation lack integrity, even if the corporation stays within the letter of the law. Remember when it was considered bad sportsmanship to boo the opposing team? Remember when you were in high school and technical fouls would be called if the crowd behaved badly to distract a basketball player at the foul line? IMO, those were lessons in integrity. Integrity engenders respect for others and the efforts of others, as well as moral respect for the self. Remember when a kid would actually tell on other kids who were drinking, smoking, stealing from other kids or teachers? It might have pissed some kids off, but it was generally accepted that the kid who told did the right thing, and they were not likely to be completely ostrasized or beat up in the alley because of it (at least in many places.) Teaching integrity, because it was broadly defined and understood, was not such a hard task for my parents. I'm finding with my own son that I do not have the support of the general mores of society to teach him. That is what Deborah and others are encountering when the store says "nevermind." My guess is the store is so shocked that a parent is holding a kid accountable that they see that as the point, not recognizing that they also need to hold the child accountable, by offering some sterness and then forgiveness, instead of just "that's OK." My son has had two i-pods taken at school after he carelessly left them in the library or classroom, and his lunch gets taken at frequent intervals. He simply accepts this. Kid's attitudes are "finders-keepers." No effort to figure out who left the equipment and return it to them. He recently found a PSP at school and was going to keep it, consistent with what his peers do. When I say it I asked where it came from. We had a heart-to-heart, and he decided he needed to put up posters saying he had found a PSP. It was soon returned to it's rightful owner. Curiously, after that, one of the I-Pods he had lost was returned to him by another student who decided after three months that maybe it wasn't just "found." It is a mystery to me that parents do not notice, or do not inquire when their kids suddenly have these small but expensive electronic devices. Why do they not insist the kid make an effort to return the device to the student who carelessly left it somewhere at school? (Disclaimer- my son attends a small, Quaker school with less than 160 students attending the upper school [9-12]) |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: SINSULL Date: 25 May 09 - 08:47 PM I am considered a bit of a joke at work because I don't accept the concept of "found" when it comes to wallets, jewelry, and expensive electronics. The norm appears to be finders keepers... Maybe I have lost or had stolen too much not to feel the loser's pain. I don't understand how anyone could sleep at night after finding a diamond ring and turning it into a gift. But I guess I am old. |

My record with goodluck bracelets has been mixed. About 50/50. But I have one with your name on it if you decide you need it. They are good looking bracelets in of themselves so maybe you need one to improve your already adequate looks. Then again maybe you don't. Anyway, The news is good and I am pleased. Let me know if I can be a help. Don |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: kendall Date: 27 May 09 - 04:20 PM For some reason, I have a hard time wearing a bracelet or a wrist watch. They irritate my skin. However, Jacqui volunteered to wear the one you made for me, Don, so I can admire the workmanship without the irritation. Now, the wedding ring you made for me is ok, no irritation at all. Do you know what a wedding ring and a tourniquet have in common? They both cut off circulation. |

Kendall, I was playing your CD in the car yesterday as I drove a young neighbor to her train. Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: gnu Date: 30 May 09 - 12:58 PM Ma Mere's pies were not so bad. She used Me Pere's recipe, a master baker who passed away when I was a wee one. The LeBlanc family sold 5" apple, blueberry and raisin pies in their "corner store" for 15p each when I was a lad. I recall seeing my first real scrap when I was about 4 years old. The pop guy had bought the last pie and put it on the seat of his truck. The chip guy took the pie and put 50p on the seat. What a fight! Me Mere called the cops and the lads were in bad shape by the time the cops arrived. Both of them were marched off to jail by a very large Tete Rouge (Irish) after he gave the 50p and the pie to Me Mere. Yup, she gave me the pie. |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: Micca Date: 30 May 09 - 04:04 PM maeve I suspect what makes them impressive (to me) is probably your choice of apple, here in the UK they frequently use Bramleys!! (YeChhhh) which are fine for apple sauce , but in a pie the go sludgy and mushy and are sort of fluid slop fillings and are too sweet also. Last time I made apple pie I used a mixture Coxs orange pippins and Granny Smiths (at the green tart stage)it was closer to the kind of firmness of filling and tartness of taste that I crave in apple pie more like the German Apfelkuchen with firm chunks of apple. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: Will Fly Date: 31 May 09 - 06:30 AM Micca - come down to Sussex this autumn and you can have a sack of apples from my tree - it's a "Crawley Beauty", an old Sussex apple variety. Makes beautiful crumbles and pies, and is a sharp eater as well. The tree fruits every other year, and this year - from the amount of blossom - looks to be a good one. |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: catspaw49 Date: 02 Jun 09 - 05:47 PM "So, Once more into the breach!" Well geeziz Kendall......There's your whole problem right there! What kind of Doc do you have anyway? You have a tumor that needs removed and it needs to be done in an operating room and not a breach! That's the dumbest damn thing I ever heard! I guess you may not know this but your Doctor should. Operating rooms are sterile environments whereas a breach has probably got a lot of residual gunpowder and acids associated with the shell's combustion and has got to be very dangerous in terms of future infection and other complications. My advice would be to get the tumor removed properly by a Doc that can tell the difference between an operating theater and a Howitzer. I'm surprised you're this friggin' stupid.......damn................ Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: curmudgeon Date: 02 Jun 09 - 05:59 PM The "breach" quoted is filthier than a howitzer, to wit, the walls of Harfleur, a crude opening in a stone fortification, full of dirt and dust, blood and feces, and all manner of rats and vermin. |

I thought that I had learned a lot of 'communication' in the pubs but Kendall has definitely added to my education in that respect. Not at me, I hasten to add, but even I've been rather surprised at the descriptive terms he can dredge up for the former president, inanimate objects such as kitchen units and cars as well as phone companies that overcharge him. It's keeping him quiet after operations that gets to be a problem. I think I'll take a roll of duct tape with me next time! |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: frogprince Date: 06 Jun 09 - 09:30 PM Gnu, I never heard of a law like that. Is the rationale prevention of people "shining" game, or what? |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: gnu Date: 06 Jun 09 - 09:38 PM Yup. It's called "harassing game". It's a law that is seldom used. It gives the wardens the ability to harass known poachers before they jack deer. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: Rapparee Date: 06 Jun 09 - 10:54 PM I know a guy who jacks bulls. Works for an artificial insemination company. The bulls are in a tight pen. I didn't know it was a crime to jack deer in Canada, but they must be some kind of tough poachers up there. I suppose it would be a crime to get the buck deer all excited and then...well, never mind. |

The one I planted for Utah died, and they were kind enough to replace it. You should see their place, all kinds of life all around them! Flora and Fauna as far as you can see. They have gone back to the land and it is obvious that the land wants them back. Thank you my dear friends. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: jacqui.c Date: 07 Jun 09 - 08:52 PM And they have free range chickens - absolutely beautiful ones! It is a lovely place, very hard work, but it will be very rewarding. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: kendall Date: 08 Jun 09 - 07:14 AM And they put up UNPAINTED bird houses for the wild birds. I get irritated when I see painted bird houses. They are not natural and birds wont use them. |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: Rapparee Date: 08 Jun 09 - 08:44 AM Free range chickens? Do they have a roundup every spring and brand the chicks? Do they hire on chickboys for it? What about the fall roundup? I can just hear the songs of the night guard as they circle the flock: "Get along little chickies get along, get along...." and "Little Joe The Chicken Wrangler" and "I'm An Old Chick Hand". Nothing like a chicken stampede, either, with the chickboys trying to circle them back and the lightning cracking overhead, a couple of chickboys trampled.... "Yee-ha! Head 'em up! Gotta get this flock to Machiasport!" |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: jacqui.c Date: 08 Jun 09 - 09:07 AM We didn't see Headless Jesus - there was too much else to inspect and too many mosquitoes for me to stay out there too long. Sorry RAP - the only round up was done by Maeve, when the chickens got too close to a forbidden area and she gently shooed them back to their own ground. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: Rapparee Date: 08 Jun 09 - 09:10 AM Do they have a chickwagon on the roundup? I knew a guy who had a chick wagon -- different sort of thing, though. |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: kendall Date: 09 Jun 09 - 11:29 AM maeve, our tree is looking quite dejected. I think it misses you. I followed your instructions to the letter, but it may not like the clay soil I stuck it with. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: maeve Date: 09 Jun 09 - 12:57 PM Kendall, not to worry. Red Oak is one of the most adaptable oaks around. It was in a sandy loam soil, so we were able to get the roots out without losing any. Clay soil isn't the problem for this tree it might have been for a White Oak. We have a week or so of cloudy skies and moderate rain coming up, so let's just give it time to adjust to its new home. If it still looks unhappy in a week, give me a call and I'll take a look. Thinking of you, maeve |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's bad news (May 2009) From: gnu Date: 09 Jun 09 - 02:34 PM Red oak is the only wood I use for making furniture and such. The grain is just soooo pleasing to the eye. There are lots of other woods that are great for certain applications, and budgets, but red oak is the only stuff I keep in stock. |
