Subject: Recording of Woody's 'Deportee' (UK) ? From: Pete Jennings Date: 18 Jun 04 - 12:40 PM Anybody know where I can find a recording of Deportee in the UK? I've searched the CD shelves endlessly and can't find one anywhere. Thanks Pete |
Subject: RE: Recording of Woody's 'Deportee' (UK) ? From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Jun 04 - 12:54 PM Hi, Pete - I've searched high and low, and I haven't found a Woody Guthrie recording of this song. Many other people recorded it, but not Woody. Cisco Houston's recording is probably the best-known rendition, followed perhaps by the recording by Judy Collins. See the other threads on "Deportee": for a history of this song. Woody didn't write the tune - Joe Klein's Woody biography says he chanted the lyrics. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Recording of Woody's 'Deportee' (UK) ? From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 18 Jun 04 - 03:19 PM I'm not sure there are any recordings of Guthrie performing this song. The music was added in the early 1960's by Martin Hoffman. It is my understanding that Woody recited the poem when performing. |
Subject: RE: Recording of Woody's 'Deportee' (UK) ? From: Backstage Manager(inactive) Date: 18 Jun 04 - 03:42 PM There are no recordings of Woody singing "Deportees." He wrote the words, circa 1948, and it was set to music by Marty Hoffman in 1958. As Ron noted, Woody would kind of recite the words. There are many, many recordings. SOme as "Deportee," some as "Deportees," and some as "Plane Wreck at Los Gatos." Artists with currently in-print recorded versions include: Joan Baez; Tom Williams; The Byrds; Joel Rafael; Barbara Dane; Arlo Guthrie; Judy Collins; Cisco Houston; Priscilla Herdman; Peter, Paul & Mary w/Ramblin' Jack Elliott; Peter, Paul & Mary w/Tom Paxton; David Rodriguez; The Short Sisters; Nanci Griffth w/Lucinda Williams, Tish Hinojosa, Odetta, Steve Earle, John Stewart; the Highwaymen (Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson & Waylon Jennings); James Talley; The Vanaver Caravan; Bruce Springsteen; Mike Beck; Hoyt Axton & Arlo Guthrie. I'm sure some of those are available in the UK I'm sure some of those recordings |

Subject: RE: Recording of Woody's 'Deportee' (UK) ? From: GUEST,Ballyholme Date: 18 Jun 04 - 05:11 PM I remember reading that Martin Simpson regarded Dolly Parton's version very highly. I've been trying to get a copy of her recording for a long time but can't seem to find it in record shops. |
Subject: Looking for a version of 'Deportees' From: GUEST,Kegan Mahon Date: 22 May 09 - 08:17 AM The version I'm trying to recall was sung by a folk group, probably in the '60s, but I don't know. I heard it a few years ago online, but it's since been removed. It opened with a male singer reading part of the 1948 article about the plane wreck at Los Gatos. The only other bit of info I can seem to recall is that there was also a female in the group. If anyone knows, I thank you in advance. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a version of 'Deportees' From: GUEST,TIA Date: 22 May 09 - 09:37 AM I sure do remember the Joan Baez version. Will look for the one you mention. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a version of 'Deportees' From: GUEST,Brad Sondahl Date: 22 May 09 - 10:00 AM Could it be from the Tribute to Woody Guthrie compilation album from a concert shortly after he died, with narrations by Will Geer. Can't seem to find it on Amazon though... Ramblin Jack Elliot, Odetta, and a bunch of the major folkies were also on it. Seems to me like the version of Deportee on the album was by Judy Collins, but my memory is faded. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a version of 'Deportees' From: Declan Date: 22 May 09 - 01:16 PM Brad, Your memory of that album is spot on. Will Geer does some narration on track 19 followed by Judy Collins singing Deportee on track 20. I'm listening to it right now. The only thing is that the narration is not about the song deportee and definitely doesn't come from the article about the crash. So maybe this isn't the one that Kegan is looking for. |

Subject: RE: Looking for a particular recording of 'Deportees' From: GUEST,Mike Solakian Date: 24 May 10 - 05:03 PM I can't believe no one thinks Arlo's version is the best-probably the closest we will get to hearing Woody sing it. I think it clearly brings out the emotions, etc. I had the privilege to meet Arlo at a benefit concert a few years ago and told him this was my favorite song of his-he seemed truly pleased. |

Subject: RE: Looking for a particular recording of 'Deportees' From: Joe Offer Date: 24 May 10 - 08:22 PM Hi, Mike- I agree that Arlo's recording of "Deportee" is wonderful, but I doubt that he sings it like Woody sang it. Note that the tune was written in the early 1960's by Martin Hoffman - after Woody was too sick to sing (he died in 1967). Wooid's performance of the song was described as "chanting," while Arlo uses the Martin Hoffman tune. So, far, I haven't found any indication that there is a recording of Woody singing this song. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Looking for a particular recording of 'Deportees' From: GUEST,Jim Date: 27 Jan 17 - 02:26 PM I thought there was a version, possibly by Nanci Griffith, where there is a spoken part where the narrator reads from the Fresno Bee (the Fresno newspaper). Subject: RE: Looking for a particular recording of 'Deportees' From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Jan 17 - 03:55 PM Good day to refresh this thread, Jim. The "Plane Wreck at Los Gatos Canyon" happened about ten miles outside Coalinga in western Fresno County, California, on January 28, 1948. Nanci Griffith did indeed make a recording of Woody Guthrie's "Deportee" on her Other Voices, Too (A Trip Back to Bountiful) album. The artists on the track were Nanci Griffith, Lucinda Williams, Tish Hinojosa, Odetta, Steve Earle, and John Stewart. Here's a YouTube recording: You may want to look at the other threads on this song, crosslinked up at the top of this page. This thread (click) includes a transcript of the New York Times article that inspired Woody Guthrie to write the song. -Joe Offer- |
