Hi to everyone,

Back in March I contributed to several threads on the theme of yodellers. It occurs to me that it might be worthwhile to ask:

1). who your favourite yodellers are?

2).who do you think the best yodellers are?

3). what are your favourite yodel tracks?

There are of course many potential contenders from around the world but maybe someone out there has a favourite who is not one of the "big names". Also what is it about their style that makes them your favourite.

To start the ball rolling, Ranger Doug once told me that he idolised Roy Rogers and elton Britt but thought the best yodeller was Franzl Lang.

Kenny Roberts however said that elton Britt was his yodel idol, Slim Clark was the fastest he had heard but that Franzl Lang was the overall best yodeller.

I have also heard say that Jimmie Rodgers was the best - not because he did anything spectacular but because what he did was excllent and he always made it fit with the mood of the lyrics. I think Merle haggard said something along similar lines on his famous "Same Train A Different Time" album.

So what does everyone think - serious answers please.

Ranger Doug is a pretty fair hand in his own right, but I have to go with the old Blue Yodeler himself, Jimmy Rodgers. His yodels do fit right in not just the mood of the lyrics but in the rhythn of the song as well.

Elton Britt was exceptional and as has been said about Jimmie Rodgers the yodel was integrated into the rhythm and emotion of his songs in a unique way. Other yodelers I enjoy for various reasons are Marge and Debby Rhodes of Nashville, TN for their harmony yodeling and Kerry Kristenson and David Bradley for the beauty of their yodels.

Right now my favorite is Switzerland's Melanie Oesch of Oesch's die Dritten. She yodels wonderfully and her regular voice is very good. Also, she's a born performer. It is obvious that she enjoys singing and she genuinely likes her audience.

She's so pretty, too. I enjoy watching her.

Many spoken of here are great, but for pure technical ability combined with real listenability, I have to give a slight edge to Bill Staines. --- 15 or 20 years ago, Bill was the best.

having just run across a pre-Rodgers recording of Riley Puckett, I'm enchanted by him for the moment.
Mary Schneider fascinates me for her apparent doublejointed throat.

I'm with Art on Bill Staines for listenability. He and Ranger Doug are two I can think of offhand that don't wear me out quickly.
For listenability, Jimmie Rodgers is low on my list..but I sure do like him--in very small doses.

Patsy Montana impresses me for her early success and ability to still yodel well after so many years.

Louis Armstrong did a wonderful vocal version of "Erzherzog Johann Jodler". It's on an extreme rare record I bought in Vienna in the 60'.

Patsy Montana certainly belongs on any list of favorite yodelers and she was also an influence on many and going strong up until her death and a fine, gracious lady. I've also enjoyed Slim Whitman, Kenny Rogers, and Frank Ifield who could create interest in a song by inserting a falsetto note or two.

My (revised) list in no particular order.

On any given day I'll listen to one more than others.
OK, OK, Frank Ifield, Roy Rogers and Rex Allen are my biggest influences.

GUYS: Roy Rogers, Rex Allen, Frank Ifield, Elton Britt, Slim Whitman, Bill Staines, and now Bill Haley,Kenny Roberts, Ranger Doug Green, Wilf Carter, Montana Slim, (although I'm not sure which of the last two I like better!), Merle Travis and Marty Robbins.

GALS: Carolina Cotton, Patsy Montana, Rosalie Allen, the De Zurik Sisters,Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer.

Tug - nothing wrong with Jimmie Rodgers; I found his yodeling to very plain and unornamented, just not my cuppa joe.

I really enjoy the yodelling pyrotechnics of a Frank Ifield or Rex Allen or all the others I mentioned.

However, I love Jimmie Rodgers' songwriting and singing.

As a quick follow-up: JR did pretty much the same yodel in his songs.

If you listen to Rex Allen singing 'Yodeling Crazy' he does 4 or 5 different yodels in the song.

Kerry is a present-day American who learned to yodel in Europe. He's great, and he does both Alpine and cowboy yodeling. His regular voice is warm and beautiful and his yodeling is fantastic. You can search for his name on YouTube and hear a number of his songs.

He sells a CD on how to yodel and freely admits that grandparents buy it for grandkids so as to get revenge on the hapless generation in-between.

There are still quite a few exceptional yodelers who have not been recognized. Bill Staines has been mentioned, now, four times. Janet McBride of Mesquite, Texas certainly should be on the list if one is being compiled. She has been an inspiration to many of the younger singers attracted to yodeling and was recognized by Leann Rimes for her influence when Rimes recorded her unique version of "Blue". Janet has deservedly won a number of awards.

An oldtimer who is rarely mentioned among artists who excel at the yodel is Goebel Reeves, the Texas Drifter. I have only heard a couple of recordings by Reeves, and he is a little quirky for my tastes, but I would be interested in what others who are more familiar with him might think.

Chic Murray was a nice, easy yodeller. His best known recording was the country classic "Satisfied Mind" which had a gentle, tyrolean style yodel in it. The recording was included on EMI UK's compilation "Yodelling Crazy" released around 1992 if I remember correctly.

The set might be worth checking out as it has recordings from US, Australia, UK, Germany, etc and ranges from 1990s back to 1920s. Do not confuse with a current budget collection with the same title that is currently doing the rounds. This on EMI UK but was also distributed by EMI Australia and EMI Europe.

Keep yodelin'....this is fascinating!

By the way, I agree that Bill Staines is / was great by why doesn't he do it on his recordings? I have several LPs / CDs and only about 3 or 4 with a yodel

Yodeling doesn't have to be comic. Go to YouTube and search for 'Yodel Choir' and you will hear yodeling which has no comedy and no oom-pah.

Yodelling uses all the skills a singer has. It is the vocal equivalent of a top gymnast flying around the parallel bars at top speed. Yodelling is an example of a basic human drive - the drive to show off.

Here's a video of a Angela Wiedl of Germany singing to an audience in Michigan.

She sings from B-flat below the staff up to an F at the top of the staff. Her low notes are rich and her high notes are sweet. When she yodels, she yodels very fast and she whips from her chest voice to her head voice with amazing rapidity. These are things we look for in a good yodeler.

The audience is courteous and attentive. They know what she's accomplishing, and they like it. This rapport with the audience is another thing I like about the world of yodeling.

A yodel song usually has two parts, a story told in verses (narrative) which alternates with yodeling. My personal standard is that the narrative voice must be nice to listen to. It doesn't matter to me how fancy the yodelling if the narrative voice is ugly. In other words, out goes Jimmy Rodgers...

I just found a present for a friend who once made me a yodeling compellation CD. I have yet to listen to the intended gift, but it is a 2-CD sey of Mary Schneider-"Australia's Queen Of Yodeling" called "Yodelling The Classics: The Complete Collection". The Dezurik Sisters, the amazing Yodelin' Slim Clark, and the Girls of the Golden West, with a special mention of Elton Britt, not for "Chime Bells," which is great, but for "Cowpoke," which is better.

No account of yodeling would be complete, either, without the ultra-mellow duo and trio yodeling of the hugely talented *original* Sons of the Pioneers of the 1930s.

And for easy, slow and spine-shivering, the blues singer Tommy Johnson (especially "Cool Drink of Water Blues") and the man who learned from that style, Jimmie Rodgers and his blue yodels. Not all yodels need to be athletic to qualify!

Personally I have found that my favorite in Canada's top yodeller Leo "Little Slim" Celsie. He has also just passed away August 31, 2009. Do a search on him on the internet. He is fantastic!

it's great to see that somany people are still appreciating the yodellers. The BBC's Radio 2 is planning a 1 hour special on the subject in August.

Goebel Reeves (The Texas Drifter) has taken some hits in this thread. In my view he was an excellent yodeller - listen to his uptempo recording of "Happy Days" to hear his unique "gurgle" or "trill" yodel! If you then track down Tex Morton's incredible version of "Big Rock Candy Mountain" you will be able to hear the result of merging the Reeves trill into the yodels of Harry Torrani!!

Mention should also be made of Belgium's singing, whistling yodeller Bobbejaan Schoepen who - despite his reputation for novelty and comedy songs - had a beautiful singing voice and a sweet, powerful yodel. He passed away a couple of weeks ago - a great old gentleman and a multi-talented showman.

Australia has produced some superb yodellers. Several have been mentioned already but check out Buddy Williams, Shirley Thoms, Gordon Parsons, Reg Lindsay, Tim McNamara, Smoky Dawson, Tom & Ted LeGarde, Lily Conners, Johanna Hemara, The McKean Sisters (Joy & Heather) - and that's just for starters.

Ronnie Ronalde was a great yodeller - not one for the vocal gymnastics but his falsetto was incredibly pure and powerful.

Also the English Music hall singer G H Elliott could yodel well - his music is not heard much now because many of his songs were pseudo-black songs and use terms that are no longer socially acceptable. His music was never intended to offend - it was innocent and happy. His vocal range was amazing -listen to his 1950s recording of "In Carolina"

Harry Lester & His Hayseeds featured a superb yodeller who was billed as "Goofus" - anybody know who he was?

Finally, who is familiar with the old-time music hall yodeller George Van Dusen?

A few years ago, a woman with a doctorate in choral directing came to give our church choir some tips. She told that us that some people with southern accents use 'umlauts' or front vowels. I didn't believe her. But I've been listening since then, and she's right.

Here's a link to a nice song with yodeling by Frank Ifield. (I came across it while searching for some of the singers mentioned here.) Listen when he sings 'true' and other words with a long u sound. There's a long e sound in the u's. That's an umlaut.

Patsy Montana certainly belongs on any list of favorite yodelers and she was also an influence on many and going strong up until her death and a fine, gracious lady. I've also enjoyed Slim Whitman, Kenny Rogers, and Frank Ifield who could create interest in a song by inserting a falsetto note or two.

one of the best yodelers in the world today must be Jim Whitman. I remember buying one of his albums in England in 1985 whilst on holiday in Great Yarmouth with such great yodeling in song like 'Yodel me a lovesong' and Indiam Maiden. whilst on holiday in Ireland this year to my surprise Jim was doing a show near where we stayed. His yodeling that night was supurb rattling of songs like 'She Taught me To Yodel' 'Chimbells' 'Indian Lovecall' 'Storm Clouds' 'The Skaters Waltz Yodel' how he hits those high notes is amazing and the long yodel note in 'Chimbels' had every standing to applause. He is definately the best today.

Sandy, I think that Jim and Slim are different people but have no idea if they are related. I do think there is some resemblance but am no expert in these matters.

Some interest in Bill Haley has been shown here. I am no expert there either but several years back I stumbled upon several reissues from Haley's early days. Back in the 1940s before he became a rock and roll icon, Haley's primary interest was country and western music. Early bands bore the names of Texas Range Riders, Four Aces of Western Swing, and the Saddlemen.

He recorded such songs as Wreck on the Highway, The Covered Wagon Rolled Right Along, Ten Gallon Stetson, Yodel Your Blues Away, My Palomino and I, and Candy Kisses.

I wondered when someone was going to mention Jim Whitman, Jim has been around for a long time and still in big demand, try booking him and you may have to wait a year. There are many great yodellers but their singing voice lets them down. There are only to yodellers that have a fantastic singing voice as well as a great yodel. Jim Whitman and Slim Whitman are not just great yodellers but they have fantastic singing voices able to sing any type of song.By the way,Jim Whitman holds the Guinness book of records for the longest yodel, 30hours 1 minute. which he did for Children In Need at the BBC studios Newcastle. Jim also holds the world fastest yodel record, 10 yodel tones in .88sec. I've just bought Jims latest albums. Jim Whitman-The Yodelling Legend. I have been a great admirer of Jim Whitman for a long time he has done so much for charity over the years.You couldn't meet a nicer person. Here's a little known fact about Jim. In 1977 The Hillsiders from Liverpool were recording an album called 'Goodbye Scottie Road' a young Jim Whitman was asked to record 2 tracks for the album. The tracks were, 'Rose Marie' and 'redwing'. Jim Sounded so much like Slim on these two tracks they wouldn't let him use his own name is case people thought it was a mis-print so they put the tracks out as Rory Kain. I've heard Jim so many times over the years, like Slim he knows how to hold an audience. Jim always does a great tribute to Slim a medley consisting of, China Doll/Fool/Lovesong of The Waterfall ending with I'll take you home again Kathleen' you could close your eyes and swear it was Slim.His latest album 'Yodelling Legend'is a must for any yodelling fan. Jim's rendition of 'The Skaters Waltz Yodel' is a great tribute to Elton Britt.

Rod Erickson's singing shows one difference between Alpine and Western yodelling. Alpine has a lot more consonants.

In working on yodel book 2, i've come across 100s of wonderful yodelers but 4 that immediately come to mind are Carolina Cotton, Leon Thomas [jazz], and Cliff Carlisle - all 3 unfairly under-regarded and then there is the brilliant Bollywood yodeler Kishore Kumar. all will be featured in YODEL IN HIFI. i will make note in this long thread of the yodelers who i've never heard of and investigate them before i finish the book...

I think the German singer Peter Hinnen has a wonderful voice. However, his singing is often overshadowed by schlock.

Goebel wrote Hobo's Lullaby which Guthrie recorded, so there may be some creditability there. Goebel's recording of the song has a couple of extra verses and yodelling as well but it doesn't seem to fit to my ear. In any case it's his song so who am I to judge!

In England, there were really only two really great yodellers on the English country scene.

One of course was Frank Ifield. the other was the late Keith Manifold. Keith must have gigged every inch of England in the 1970's and eighties. he did well on the Hughie Greene version of opportunity knocks - only narrowly beaten by Lena Zavaroni. I think every cowboy in England voted for him.

Yodelling always sounded a bit weird to me. i did a gig one night in Oswestry with a bloke who yodelled Abide with Me as the climax of his act. he went down a storm. I sort of felt, which planet have I landed on now.

FRANK IFIELD

Frank Ifield these days lives in Australia (where he did most of his growing up) and still works in the business but no longer performing. If you want to know more about him check out www.frankifield.com

Back in the 50s he yodelled on a lot of his records and you might want to seek out "The Yodelling Cowboy Years" on the UK Jasmine label at www.jasmine-records.co.uk or the 3CD budget set "The Complete A & B Sides" on EMI Gold. The former is early Australian material with lots of actual yodelling, the latter presents his EMI UK recordings and some Nashville cuts from the 60s when he yodelled less but had one of the best voice-break voices in the business. He did a lot of amazing falsetto breaks on his records.

Frank was the first artiste to have 3 consecutive No 1 hits in the UK pop charts ("I Remember You", "Lovesick Blues" and "The Wayward Wind" in 1962) and gave the Beatles their first break outside Liverpool.

KEITH MANIFOLD

Keith Manifold was a country fan as well as a singer and he loved yodelling. He made several albums (vinyl) - mainly on the UK Westwood label and you can probably find some of them if you search www.gemm.com. He was a real gentleman and lived in Matlock Bath in Derbyshire, England.

YODELLERS ON RADIO

By the way, I am now presenting a 3 hour country show every 2 weeks on a Sunday from 6pm-9pm UK time. I am playing all types and styles of country music from the 20s to the modern day but the emphasis is on the more traditional sounds. I always try to include some yodellers as few stations seem to play them these days.

I think Rex Allen and Roy Rogers are the best yodelers. Two completely different techniques. Elton Britt's yodels, from what I've heard, are good, but I can do them, so they can't be *that* good. :D Hee hee! I yodel some, but my breaks aren't as clean as they should be, yet. I'm still practicing!

I grew up with Yodelin' Slim Clark. Whilst untangling this thread I've been smiling as I recall his lyrics. Smiles~fantastic thread! Thanks for the many suggestions.
I often have the pleasure of hearing Manitoba's own Stu Clayton, most recently at an epilepsy fundraiser. Stu is a great traditional 'western' yodeler, and a fine gentleman. His daughter, Juanita Clayton, has taken up the habit, and is now an award-winning yodeler as well. Thanks again for the thread, Paul. Keep on yodelin'!

Mary Schneider has been mentioned a couple of times so far. I have no idea who billed her as the Australian Yodeling Queen and am in no position to comment on whether the title is deserved but she is a formidable talent. She may not appeal to everyone but surely some folks will like what she does. She is well represented on youtube.

This is a different Mockingbird Yodel than is sung by Carolina Cotton and other country and western swing singers. A search on youtube for Mockingbird Yodel will turn up several fine Aussie yodelers including Angela Hayden and Dianna Corcoran. You can also find Wanda Jackson and the Cowboy Yodel.

I have two. Elton Britt and Wilf Carter. I don't think either of them ever made a poor recording. Many others (including myself) are imperfect yodelers. They crack or strain.
'Though I have not heard her in years, I recall Carolina Cotton as the best among the females(I have to get her recordings).
