This Sunday, May 24, is the birthday of Olly Athelstan-Price, fiddler with the twmpath/ceilidh combo Dr Price's Fire Band, musician and daner with Gwerinwyr Gwent, writer of many tunes including Lady Caernarfon's Pig, Three Crocodiles And A Dead Sheep, Aldi Inspiration and Bone's Beer's Revenge (which have implanted themselves in Welsh dancing tradition), member of Llantrisant Mari Lwyd (the horse's head), founder member of the Swansea ceilidh bands Pig's Ear and Play It By Ear, erstwhile committee member of Swansea University Folk Club and secretary/treasurer of Llantrisant Folk Club.

Erratum... Olly says: "I was secretary of Bedford College Of Education Folk Club. I don't think Swansea University had a folk club - if there had been, I would have been a member."

But there WAS a Swansea Uni Folk Club, long after Olly had graduated. Mike James (my co-founder in the folk band Swansea Jack) was organiser, and we watched and listened to an absolute plethora of stunning artists, including the electric Swan Arcade (which soon burned out,) wizard Welsh guitarist John James, John and Sue Kirkpatrick, Richard Thompson, Shirley Collins and The Etchingham Steam Band, which contained Ashley Hutchings and Vic Gammon.

Does anyone remember those heady days of the Swansea scene? You could make Olly a wonderful birthday present...

Hi Olly - Happy Birthday.   Andrew used to go to the Swansea Uni Folk Club - he's out at present but I'm sure he'll post some memories of the Club later on.

Happy birthday, though we have only met once, I think. (Ivy bush reunion).
