Art, thanks again for the Don Lange songs you sent me a long time ago now. I hope you are keeping well and enjoying life.

A long-gone Don Lange album from the 70s is available for free download here:

Lange and Freeman.

It has both 'Allende' and 'Northern Lights'.

Don's song "Northern Lights" has always been a particular favorite of mine.

"I was the Northern Lights on a July night,
And you were a southbound train."

(Or maybe id was the other way around...?)

Art

My favourite is 'Allende'. I posted the lyrics to it in the thread linked below. The lyrics of Christy Moore's cover version were posted by michaelr. The third line of my transcription of Lange's original should be amended to: 'And, like it or not, it's country or rock'. As Art Thieme points out in another thread, Don Lange these days is into wine production.

Allende.

I booked Don Lange for a concert at the Stamford Museum many years ago and he was always grateful. He'd sent out something like 30 cassettes and promotional material, and I was the only one who responded. I thought he was a great songwriter but haven't heard anything of his in years. Two songs stick in my mind... one was "What the Country Needs Is a War sung from the viewpoint of business people who make a fortune on producing materials for war. There as another one about spinning Grandma's tales. I long since lost the cassette, so I am fuzzy on details, but the songs have never completely left me.

Sitting here listening to Art Thieme doing "Here's to the Rounders" by Don Lange. I have to admit I am not that familiar with Don's songs but this is a masterpiece done by a folk legend and I am blown away by it. What are some others that I should hear ...

amazing writer I think
