Subject: "Hootenanny Hoot "The Film From: GUEST,Bluesman James Date: 24 May 09 - 10:54 AM This may sound a bit silly and I apologize if anyone things this is a waste of time. Some time around 1963, ( was only 9 years old at the time) there was this movie called "Hootenanny Hoot" I guess it was an attempt to exploit the so called "college folk craze" at the time. By recollection "The Rooftop Singers" "The Kingston Trio" and "The Brothers Four" all had AM hits so its understandable a Hollywood attempt to cash in on the success is plausible. I am going to assume the film is not worth the cellulite its printed on but I have seen some youtube clippings of "The Brothers Four " Joe and Eddy (theres a meeting here tonight" and the remarkable Judy Henske doing her famous "Wade in the Water" I saw a clip of Johnny Cash with straight black hair playing a Gibson 12 string singing "Frankie and Johnny" These clips got my curiosity and I would like to see the film. Has anyone here had and would know if there is a DVD version? Thanks to all. |
Subject: RE: Hootenanny Hoot The Film From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 24 May 09 - 11:12 AM I don't know if this turkey (except for the musical portions) is available on DVD...but Turner Classic Movies (TCM) shows it from time to time. You might check their website to see if coming soon. Good luck. |

Subject: RE: Hootenanny Hoot The Film From: GUEST,Huck Date: 24 May 09 - 11:40 AM Yes I saw this last year on TCM & it was worthwhile for the music parts. I had forgotten the name of the title, usually they show these marginal items in the middle of the night so have your dvr ready. Interesting they also showed, later that year, a Brit film about the traditional jazz movement that was sweeping England's campuses at the same time that the folk "scare" was happening in the states, "It's Trad Dad!" |
Subject: RE: Hootenanny Hoot The Film From: JJ Date: 24 May 09 - 11:46 AM I saw this from about halfway on, once. The plot is so bad as to not even be forgettable, but the acts -- well, some of them -- are worth it. I have the original soundtrack LP, which isn't, really, but what can you do? And it can't be found on home video anywhere, except in a taped-from-TV version. TCM remains your best friend, here. |

Subject: RE: Hootenanny Hoot The Film From: Don Firth Date: 24 May 09 - 02:04 PM I can't speak from personal experience myself because I decided to give it a pass. I knew, from the number of carpetbaggers who had suddenly started trying to mine the folk scene for quick profits and the kind of garbage they were trying to pass off as "folk," that this was going to be a real stinker. Friends who did see it warned me that if I went, I should be sure to take a good supply of barf-bags. I heard that after she saw it, Judy Henske, who was in the movie, begged people not to go see it. Subject: RE: Hootenanny Hoot The Film From: Padre Date: 24 May 09 - 09:47 PM Among the 'stars' of the picture was one Vikki Dougan - THE Vikki Dougan of the Limeliters' song. And yes, she did wear one of her famous backless dresses! This was also the last film she ever made - wonder why? Padre |
