Guests for this months jumping KFFC are:

Anna Shannon
Since being awarded BBC Radio Yorkshire Songwriter of the Year in August 2006 Anna has been forging a steady path into the folk scene, appearing at numerous festivals during 2007/8 where she has entertained her audiences with her original songs.

She is just great.... deserves a much wider audience.

Garry Jackson (USA)
Canadian singer/songwriter and Wild Oats Recording artist. Grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, then spent half of his life in the Newmarket, Ontario area. Now splits his time between Nashville, Tennessee and Schomberg, Ontario, Canada.

Not our usual fayre at all.... a Nashville songwriter! but he has some great songs (they make me cry!), and a really simple "folky" style presentation.

Starts at 7.30pm, bring your own bottle this month. Share your music with us after the main acts at 10.30. £5, kids free.

Kirkby Fleetham Village Hall, Kirkby Fleetham, North Yorks, DL7 0SH

Call Paul on 01609 748 259 for tickets

Looks like we might have lost Garry Jackson.

If anyone sees him, can they let me know?

Lining up a couple of surprises just in case!

Look I don't want to be rude to Anna, I am sure she's a lovely lass, but I have seen her live, and I have seen her website, and although she can clearly sling and play, the material is dreadful. I don't understand why she seems to be getting so many positive reviews... the lyrics are mostly corny folk-cliches. It's not original, nor fresh. It's a pity because like I said, she can sing and play pretty well. I wish her all the best, but I just don't get it.

Forgot to add that I am a big fan of Anna's so i am biased. I have known Anna for nearly twenty years and she is incredibly tallented, what you see is only a tiny bit of that tallent.

Guest guest.
While you are of course entitled to your opinion it would maybe be more likely to be given serious consideration by others if you were to sign in/join with a proper Mudcat name, so that folks know you are being serious and not just someone who is out to make a fuss on the thread.
I dont agree the materiel I have heard is dreadful but I find with music that tastes differ.
If you don't think a particular artiste is worth another listen then don't go. I listen and make my own mind up as you do.
I sometimes overlook the skill and mastery of the playing if the materiel is moving or has something to say to me.
but I find it a little distasteful that you see fit to comment in this way.

Hi Stallion & Tim. I thought I'd get that kind of response. No, I did not post it so no one would turn up - didn't realise there was anything coming up. I didn't sign in cos I am not a member yet. The point of my post was not to slag Anna off, like I said she can sing and play well, I just donlt like the material. What I love about the folk scene is that anyone can get up and play, good players and bad, without prejudice. I just don't get the rave reciews for Anna's stuff. I do get that Anna is a fine performer, I just don't think that her material warrants the reviews. So I suppose I was asking for someone to let me know why they like the material. I just wanted a conversatiom with some other follies, not a slanging match. I did not come on to insult Anna, I paid her some compliments, I just don't think her material is strong. And I wondered what others thought.

Its just not your thing I guess.
Move on. There is loads of music to choose from and unless she is getting the gigs you were after or filling a rival club whats the problem?
I myself have music on My Space.
Maybe that is more to your taste?
If it is please feel free to make a big thread about it and render me rich and famous beyond my wildest dreams.
Sigh!

I have never posted on here before. I just saw the Anna Shannon post thing, and replied. I have nothing to "move on" from. I haven't set out to slag her off, nor convince anyone else of my opinion, I just thought I'd have a conversation with someone. There is no problem with Anna performing at all. Like I said, I love the folk scene cos anyone can have a go, and I would never have a go at anyone for doing it. That's not what I was doing here, I just wanted to know what others thought, because I don't get the rave reviews - it's not that I don't get Anna's right to perform, nor anyone's right to see her peform, nor their right to enjoy it. I know one person's thing isn't anothers, and I just thought I'd have a conversation with someone about what I thought, I didn;t want to get personal with people. I kind of thought that's what these discussion things were for. I did think I might get a negative response, because I have seen other people get into right ding-dongs on here, and sometimes it get's a bit heated. But don;t take my post as a nasty piece of spite, it wasn't. I just wanted to know what others thought. Maybe I could have worded my original post better, but I did say that my intention was not to be rude - and it wasn't. I'll check out your myspace! But gosh, I'm not going to post anything again!!!

You are saying you got what you expected I think.
So you knew when you posted that what you were posting may be seen by some as inappropriate for this thread?
So you were right .
Don't forget the rave review of me music.
Do you have some stuff online I could come listen to?
It would be a pity not to give it another go.
There are lots of people out there with loads of opinions and a wealth of experience of music.
Its also a place of give and take, you don't give it if you cant take it.
Cheer up its still the weekend.

Nah, I kind of expected a negative response, but not that bad, so no, it was unexpected. I didn't think it was inappropriate. I thought this was a forum for people to discuss stuff, not attack each other (i didn't attack Anna, i just said i thought the material was bad, bu tpaid her other compliments). But anyway, I'll stick to reading other people's stuff. Nah I have no stuff on line, I am not a peformer.

Ok well being mindful of this being a thread to promote a club I am gonna stop posting now but hope you will go sign up and get yourself around on the cat as it is a good place to spend some time usually.
Some people come on here just for the argument sometimes so you can be misunderstood if you are a little forthright or your comment seem inappropriate to others.
I am always in trouble :-)
Cheers.

Let's be clear, this gig was last year.

....and Anna was great! Personally I like alot of her songs as well. Each to there own though.

"A Little Piece of Africa" is a masterpiece, one of the most moving songs out there.

Tim, chill mate, you're absolutely welcome to post a link to your MySpace, I like alot of your songs too!

Oh Lordy, if only I liked everyones music! It's true! sometimes I glaze over. But I am careful not to express my opinion since I am not really a skilled critic. Similiarly I rarely listen to our detractors since we really do not take ourselves too seriously...watch out for new cd "Songs from the back of a taxi" it's about fun, I am sorry Anna doesn't float guests boat but it aint the end of the world.

I find it incredible that someone whould come onto mudcat for the first with the sole intention of being negativeff. OK, you don't like Anna's music. so why not find a thread about someone you do like and post something ?

Personally, I'm a huge fan of Anna, both live and on CD. Her 'Song Without Words (Yorkshire Song)' is a wonderful piece of writing and brings a tear to my eye whenever I hear it. It comes well to the top of my 'songs I wish I had written' list.

I did not come onto mudcat with the sole intention of being negative, I didn't come on deliberately to make that comment, I was rooting around and just saw a thread and commented. I apologise for any offence caused. As I said, I just wanted to get into a discussion. I though these forums were to discuss music, likes as well as dislikes, opinions etc. Email and text always sound much worse than they were meant to sound, but I know it could have been worded better, and ideally I wouldn't have posted it at all. I realise my original post was badly worded, I shouldn't have posted it, but it wasn't meant to cause offence to Anna or her supporters.

Guest, Guest.

You are of course entitled to your opinion! ..... and I think it has been discussed, in pretty forthright terms.

Most people are pretty guarded about posting negative comments about individual performers (who probably have friends and supporters who read Mudcat)preferring to post when they have something positive to say.

If you are new, as you say, you may not have picked that up though.

GUEST, Guest, thanks for clarifying your position. What you have to understand is that, a while ago, there was a very unpleasant series of posts from someone using the name GUEST, Guest - much of it directed at me. This got so unpleasant that Joe Offer banned the use of that particular guest name. Your post seemed to be deja vu for a moment, especially as you chose a thread that is nearly a year old. If you are serious about posting on Mudcat and getting into discussions, why not become a member - even if you use a pseudonym, people will get to know you?

Oh, and I forgot to say, as you may have realised if you've read through a few threads, there are some of us (oh alright, me) who are grumpy old bastards who take offence at the drop of a hat and over-react.
