and...A large number of the current Live at the BBC recordings, including Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Led Zeppelin, The Moody Blues and the Incredible String Band feature the Peel Sessions recorded by the aforementioned musicians.

The label, established by Clive Selwood and John Peel in 1986, was the primary distributor of BBC recordings, including Peel Sessions

Having worked with Stuart Maconie for many years, I would concur with Mr Cringe. He is undoubtedly one of the best broadcasters that work for the Beeb. Open to all styles and tastes of music (and a big Nic Jones fan as well!)

Richard - 6 is mainly fairly generic indie music, but I'll forgive them anything for broadcasting "The Freak Zone", Stuart Maconie's excellent Sunday Tea Time show. It's a proper eclectic mix of folk, jazz, prog, psych, post-punk and outright strangeness. Far and away the best programme on national radio. And not so long ago he interviewed Shirley Collins as his featured guest...

Note to Pavane.
Actually quite a lot of those Peel sessions survived the dreaded cull of the 70's.
Whether they will ever see the light of day again, is probably unlikely, but, we live in hopes.
But, at least all of the surviving sessions are now saved to a huge digi database, that can be accessed by programme producers.

The thing is.....and I don't want to disappoint you all here...the thing is, that the BBC won't listen.

But, they are being *seen* to be listening, so they can at least tick the box I suppose.

They have messageboards filled with 'what people want'...but er..it all falls on deaf eyes and blind ears...

I mentioned John Peel in my reply to BBC as well. But unfortunately, they can't repeat his programs, (including Nic Jones, Steeleye Span and many others) because they wiped the tapes.

Looks like the BBC has blooped!!

When I tried the link to the consultation page, I got a Page Load Error with the following message

Done as to R2. I cannot comment on R6 - I only hear short snatches as I am looking for things on terrestrial digital, and from what I recall it always seemed to be playing slumcult urban mobo doof-doof music (unless that was someone else)

I'm a bit young to remember John Peel, but my dad remembers the days of Top Gear and Peel's continued championing of bands he thought worthwhile. Peel's famous quote dismissing the mainstream output of the BBC's pop music station as "incredibly predictable porridge" still stands to this day.
