A recent plot-line in a British TV soap had fun mocking a naive character who saw Jesus' face on the surface of a sliced potato. Clearly we have a trend.......

lol

One of the mystifying aspects of Jesus's face showing up everywhere is the identification of it as such. I have never yet seen Jesus depicted as a Semite which would be a lot more credible. Instead his face is usually given as this androgynous being, often with blue eyes.

So my question is: Just who is showing up all over the place?

Not always, Sins. I have a photo taken from a small excursion boat visiting Tracy Arm, a fjord a few miles south of Juneau.

Tracy Arm is lovely. Deep green water, steep wooded mountains jutting tall from the water and walls of massive glaciers. I like it better than Glacier Bay which is much larger.

Anyway, once I was on the boat when I clearly saw an image on the face of South Sawyer glacier. My camera's batteries died at that moment so I asked my friend to shoot it.

She said, I don't see it. My camera won't see it either.

I said, Trust me. It will. Just shoot it.

She did and even she saw it after it was developed. I labelled it 'Spirit of South Sawyer'. I gave a copy to the excursion company and they have posted it on their wall.

It shows the face and shoulders of a seal-gut parka wearing brooding man staring back at the viewer.

There are so many things in this world I don't understand.

My craft, as many of you know, is woodturning. Often, at a show, someone will look at some grain pattern and say, "Oh, look...there's a cat...or dragon..etc...on the side of that piece."

When I make things, I try very hard NOT to see any pictures, as it affects my decisions about overall shaping, and if I tell someone what *I* see, and they don't, it affects decisions about buying it.. *grin*.
Letting the customer see what THEY see is not only easier, but good business!

Once in awhile there is some obvious thing...usually involving knots looking like 2 eyes, and the surrounding grain resembling some sort of face...human OR animal.

By the way, I'd be happy to send a copy to anyone of the photo I mention. It is not 'doctored' or Photo Shopped; for one thing I wouldn't know how. :)

Also keep in mind that these glaciers can be easily a mile wide so we're talking serious stuff here.

Two weeks later I went back to Tracy Arm, and of course the image was gone. Our glaciers are retreating and their 'faces' (no pun intended) change constantly.

Well, it's quite interesting how we see images in clouds, stains on walls, patterns on tree trunks, marmite lids, etc...

Just another of life's intriguing little things. You could think it was Jesus if you wanted to or you could think it was that guy in the Allman Brothers or maybe someone else. Jesus tends to get more press when it comes to things like that.

I saw Cheech Wizard in the toilet yesterday, for example, just before I flushed it.

In the days when, as a sinner, I smoked a pipe. I dropped my baccy on the floor. As it spilled, the curly strands spelled out "Allah is great", in the tobacco. As I finished smoking my pipe including the miraculous baccy I saw another vision. A tomato with "Allah" written in the sliced half in the window of the sandwich shop.Lying on my back in the street i saw Jesus in the clouds that floated above me. Then I saw a big black face staring down at me. Get up son you can't lie there said the policeman. That WAS bloody good baccy in them days !

One day Chongo's face will appear on the side of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Then you will see a gathering of the faithful such as has never been equalled in recorded history, and the noise level will be simply fantastic. It will be a great opportunity for fruit vendors and whisky salesmen.

Indeed, Amos...one of the things modern technology- including 150 channels of TV and the internet- have brought me is an overwhelming sense of how much of the world and the people in it are ruled ummm... influenced... by ignorance and superstition.

I have also learned how delicate & dangerous it can be to say so.

As Sorcha notes, those who **believe** that vague images on rusting water tanks and corn chips and jar lids can BE mystic, religious symbols are serious about it, and are a force that needs 'coping'.... and I'm sure some of them are also capable of doing harm to those who doubt!

We humans are, relatively, barely a tiny way out of caves, and technology has proceeded far faster than understanding & education in many of the important areas.

I wish I could live to see REAL 'civilization'.

dues that means we is not edukated in clever stuff like you? Or dus ue fink yo is beter than the rest off us? just coz yew not seen the mirrorkle of gods buttocks blowing in the clouds?

We may be only a little while out of the caves but the problem I see with education is that it is not for the masses. The specialist few remove themselve so far from the ordinary people that the gulf gets wider everyday. The language and specialist terms baffle and confuse the layman. The discoveries are beyond the comprehension of most as they have not the specialist background. We live lives led by someone elses agenda.

The real miricles are brain surgery, space exploration etc and not things of hundreds of years ago when fear and ignorance ruled more than it does now.

As mighty Bob puts it. We are "only a pawn in their game".

Bill, you said "I'm sure some of them are also capable of doing harm to those who doubt!"

You better believe it, man! Ever since I found out that you do not ascribe any sacred significance to the image of Winona Ryder that has mysteriously appeared on the west wall of my residence, I have been plotting your demise. I cannot allow a stinking unbeliever like you to pollute our world much longer. The only thing that has delayed your end is my indecision as to which form of destruction to mete out upon you.

I am torn between using a very large amount of conventional explosives, a medieval catapult armed with Greek Fire, or a platoon of rabid hamsters to send you to your final "reward".

I'm leaning toward the hamsters...

Anyone else seen nasty looking I suppose elf like creatures lurking in hedges at night? I think the ability to see them can be enhanced by alcohol but I've seen them when sober and so has (the teetotal) Pip.

On a couple of occasions, eg. there was a particularly mean looking one shaking its hand and pointing a finger at me quite near our gate, where I've gone back in daylight to see if I could work out the shape I'd seen but things never look quite the same in good light.

---
At the moment, there is a giant elephant in the trees the far side of the field behind the house. Pip and I see this shape. She does see another though, this time at the front of the house that I can't make out. She say's it is Worf from Star Trek lying on his back.

" ... an overwhelming sense of how much of the world and the people in it are ruled ummm... influenced... by ignorance and superstition"

But it's not just in the field of religion that people are ignorant and superstitious. I used to work in the soaps and detergents industry. In that field, people - especially people who worked in marketing - believed all sorts of weird things, for which there was no evidence. For example they thought that normal skin needs moisture - when in fact it has been 'designed' by millions of years of evolution to regulate its own moisture content. They believed that you could moisturise skin via soaps and surfactant based shower products - when all the evidence suggests that they (temporarily) dry the skin. They believed that the body and skin are contaminated by man-made 'toxins' and 'impurities' which can be removed by washing with simple soaps and surfactant-based products. They believed that normal skin needs 'soothing' - when in fact only damaged skin needs soothing - and products which do so are medicines, not cleansers. They believed that 'natural' ingredients are better and 'purer' than synthetic ones - when, in fact, natural ingredients are often complex mixtures and cannot be described as 'pure'. And so on, and so on. They not only subsribed to these beliefs in order to sell products but I came to realise that they really believed that they were true.

Of course our glorious leaders also subscribe to such nonsensical belief systems. For example the myth of the 'Free Market' and its 'self-regulation'; absurd beliefs for which we are all going to suffer.

Shimrod - Excellent point! Indeed the world of corporate advertising inflicts far more harmful mythology on today's North Americans than religion could ever hope to. ;-) And with far more deletirious effect too.
