Subject: 'The Laws' play in Orillia From: Little Hawk Date: 30 May 09 - 12:38 AM I saw "The Laws", a folk duo from the Windsor, Ontario (Canada) area, do a show in Orillia tonight and they were great! John and Michelle Law are Canadians, but they have a sound that makes me think of the southern USA...maybe the Carolinas, Georgia, or Texas, and they love that music, having started out steeped in Bluegrass and the music of people like Doc Watson and Bill Munro. John plays really mean guitar, slide guitar, harmonica, and mandolin, and sings with a gutsy twang. Michelle plays great bass on the Fender Precision and fine guitar as well and sings like an angel. Wowee! You gotta catch these folks if you get the chance. They play mostly original songs, very good ones, but they did one cover tune tonight: a beautiful rendition of Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through the Night". The in-between patter comes mostly from John, a bit from Michelle too, and adds a lot more to the show, and the joyfullness of their music together is a delight. Lotsa good anecdotes about Austin, Nashville, how the songs got written, etc. Hey, John and Michelle? I have no idea if you ever heard of this forum, but if so I want to say, "Thanks for putting on a terrific show for me and the other Orillians!" |
