Total n00b here (I was a member *over* ten years ago) who is not sure if this is the best way to ask, but...

I watched the 1973 version of "The Wicker Man" and cannot find out anything about the tune in the opening scene. Have checked out IMDb with no results.

The lyrics (which have been checked against the DigiTrad db) didn't show a response. Got an "Error Occurred While Processing Request" message.

So I ask some kind soul for the wisdom.

The lyrics:

Oh I am come to the North Country
Upon upon a dream
without a penny in my purse
to buy a meal for me

One time I had a hundred sheep
Upon upon a dream
skipping o're yon narrow creek
and growing wool for me

(that's all that could be had)

Anyone??? TIA

If you replace "Ochon, ochone a chroi" for "Upon upon a dream", it could be the "Garten Mother's Lullaby/Lament.

I think third time lucky! "Highland Widow's Lament" is the song you're after...just consult Mr. Google.

Thanks Effsee! I tried googling several of the lines of lyrics to no avail.

That is the one... with a little more "Scotch" added to the receipe than what I heard. I dunno if you have seen the movie of which I refer (The Wicker Man-1973) but it is not NEARLY as dreadful as the one N. Cage made recently.

But listening to this song during the opening scene was worth the other 90 minutes wasted watching this "cult" favorite. Actually the ending was kinda cute....jaaayyyzzzusssss!

BR

Aye BR, I saw the movie way back when it was new!
Watched it again last yesr on TV...seemed awfully dated.
Haven't been enthused enough to seek out the new version after reading reviews.

It's called The Highland Widows Lament by Robbie Burns.
Google( theme music film "the wicker man")

Google also tells us:- "This song is said to be Burns's version of a Gaelic lament for the ruin which followed the rebellion of the year 1745: he sent it to the Museum"...which kinda knocks back the Glencoe Massacre link.
