Subject: Jude Roberts - This Guy Is Truly Great

In all my 37 years of listening to Folk music and now in my role as the head honcho of a venue that books performers, I have never been known to rave wildly about a performer, especially one who is a virtual unknown. As I mentioned many times before, I get on the average 5 submissions a week from aspiring artists looking to play The Borderline. Some simply do not make the cut and some are really good but I have never really come across someone who is truly great, until now. His name is Jude Roberts and he is from Rosendale, NY in the Hudson Valley.

Jude is a young man in his 40s with a conservatory trained, rich tenor singing voice who sounds like John Denver did in his prime. He has an uncanny ability to write songs with ease that virtually tug at the heart strings. He is something like John Harford, John Denver, & Glen Campbell all rolled into one. I am very surprised that he is not more well known given the ability and the talent that he possesses. You can listen for yourself at www.myspace.com/heyjuderoberts.

I first discovred him on myspace about a year ago and I contacted him and asked for his CD "Stained Glass Afterglow" which bowled me over when I heard it. I played it for my wife and other members of our booking committee but they insisted that we have to follow our policy of hearing a performer live before booking him. So I then invited him in to our studio in Spring Valley to make a free video as part of our emerging artist series. The studio audience that day consisted of the 8 members of The Borderline booking committee.

Jude surprised us that day by bringing along his girlfriend, a young Irish fiddler named Lily McCabe as well as his sister, Rebecca DiBennardo, who both accompany him on the CD with harmony vocals and fiddle. I also brought in Todd Guidice, whom I consider the best sound engineer in the Hudson Valley to handle the sound that day. The 8 members of our studio audience were mesmerized by the quality of the performace that was rendered, so much so that each one of them purchased his CD on the spot. They all insisted that I have to book him into the first available spot that we had.

This is all going to happen on Sunday afternoon, September 13th at the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps building in New City. It is going to be the first time that The Borderline will be booking a virtualy unknown performer as a headliner, but I am willing to stake my reputation as a concert promoter on the fact that Jude Roberts, along with Lily McCabe & Rebecca DiBennardo will render an unforgettable quality performance that day. We hope to have the 90 minute DVD that was made in studio available that day for a DVD release party at that time as well.

He's pleasant enough, but I wouldn't say outstanding.

You really have to hear him live, in person to make that judgement.
The video in question does not really do him justice.

Tunesmith-

You know it's true that people can make more of an impression in three dimensions than they can on a video. Thank God or whatever spirit you happen to believe in!

I do appreciate having unfamiliar (to me) performers spotlighted by folks on Mudcat that I respect.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Just listening to his myspace songs now. Sounds nice...I'd like to see him in person, but like Charley, I am always happy to learn of someone new. Thanks, Sol!

I hear more of what you mean, Sol, in the song Amanda McCrae....beautiful and I do hear some John Denver-like harmonies, voicing, etc. Really beautiful song!

What can not be conveyed in a video is the rapport that a performer has with a live audience. When you sit in an audience listening to Jude Roberts you feel like he is singing to you exclusively. He makes a connection.

Yes, I know I can always draw a sellout crowd with Christine Lavin or with Danny Paisley & The Southern Grass like we did yesterday, or even with 25 of the best Sea Chantey singers like we did at our Mystic Benefit.

But I feel that as a concert promoter I have a responsibilty to the folk music world to give this emerging artist, that I truly believe has exceptional talent, a chance to be heard. I am gambling both, my reputation as well as my money on his performance, but I believe that he should get this one break that I can give him.

Of course, the video is from three years ago, and, to be fair, I'd love to hear a whole album to really get the feel of what Jude has to offer.

Tunesmith,
Are you located anywhere near the New York metro area?
He will be back here at the end of this month. He is presently in the San Diego, CA area. I will tell you where you can hear him live.
