Any help graciously recieved,

I have a recording of the song.

Can I suggest that you register with Mudcat (it's free, easy and painless!), then PM me with your e-mail address? I'll then e-mail you an MP3.

Barbara

The following books print tunes.
Jean Richie's 'Folk Songs of the Southern Appalachians' p16
Ord's 'Bothy Ballads' p181
Sharp/Karpeles 'Eighty English Folksongs' (actually from America)
Chase, 'American Folk Tales and Songs' p166
Greig Duncan Folk Song Collection Vol 6 p188 6 versions.
Henry, 'Beech Mountain Folk Songs' p52
Sharp 'FS from the Appalachian Mountains' p32
Owens, 'Texas FS' p90
Cohen/Randolph, 'Ozark FS' p493
Kennedy, 'FS of Britain & Ireland' p453
Sharp/Campbell 'Eng FS of the Southern appalachians vol 2 ' p109

Whilst these are all out of print currently they should be available in good music libraries.

Notice, most versions are American. It could even have originated there. It's not very old, probably middle of the 19thc. Spread by broadside printings.

This version is not the most memorable I have ever heard (that distinction goes to Cathal McConnell's incomparable performance) but if all you want is the words, or to refresh your recollection of the tune, it should suffice.
