Are you sure, Diane, that it was John Craven's doing that SoH were included - is he the director/editor of Countryfile as well as a presenter?

I'm not going to get nasty, however much some people seem to enjoy it, but I do find it sad that so many of your postings seem to be extremely negative, and so few in any way positive.

I've just seen the Show of Hands feature on the repeat of Countryfile.

It's not going to geneate queues of new folkies at every club in the land - but it certainly did no harm - probably neutral with regard to getting folk to new audiences.

Perhaps some researcher might think more readily of folk style music for future documentary type programmes as a result.

My esteemed organ reflects the activities of the agrobarons while the radio soap portrays the social comedy side of it. The pretend squire presenter of Countryfile was inflicting his cosy, one-dimensional platitudes on Britain's children via Newsround two decades ago, listening fodder perhaps more suited to the Rifleperson who is making far too much racket shooting innocent furry and feathered creatures to comprehend that my criticisms of:

(a) said fake neo-country dweller and
(b) the pointlessness of the Countrylife rant

constitute a fervent wish for a more realistic assessment of the iniquities of land ownership and use, the true blight on our countryside.

I live in the city now (thank deity) but originate from a tiny hamlet where the stone cottages had water pumps in the kitchens, ranges for cooking and bogs way down past the orchard. My ancestors had paid a feu to the Prince Bishops of Durham for the "privilege" of living there since the dissolution of the monasteries when they lost their lands.

As a conclusive footnote, John Craven was anong those who attempted to block my booking Billy Bragg for a Newsround mock election special, yet he picks the muddled confusion of Countrylife for last Sunday's transmission. This will, it is to be hoped, clarify absolutely the stance of this programme and its presenter.

Diane, for those of us who live and work in the country, rather than the city (in particular - there are plenty of country towns), Countryfile is one of the few programmes that actually relate to life as we live it - it has nothing to do with the Countryside Alliance. Many of us in the country find it at least as hard to relate to city life as city people do to the countryside - please allow us this small sop to our way of life while it lasts.

What you can say about John Craven is that he is not depriving a yokel of one of their ancestral cottages, living as he does in a converted manor house. Bit like Lynda Snell, really.

I watch it and don't recognise myself in any of those descriptions. I'm not lefty working class nor am I ever likely to get an inheritance (sadly!). I don't read 'The Daily Mail' either.

My mum's family were all farm labourers and my brother is a shepherd. I just like to see what's going on in the countryside.

May I suggest that you take on the redundant journalist above, for your acerbic newspaper. I'm thrilled to see you've finally been given a job reporting again, in the Borchester Echo, albeit in a fictional capacity.

Perhaps you could do an issue on the hardships being suffered right now, in the countryside around Borchester, by those living the country life, who have no jobs, no means of *reliable* transport into the bigger towns or cities to *get* jobs, no money to afford taxis, no hope of ever living in the rural communities where their families may have lived for generations. Could you also be sure to mention about the loneliness of the elderly, who no longer even have their Post Office or Village Shop to go into each day, to get their money, buy their food and generally be amongst people, which used to give them a sense of community, of life, of having people around them.

And then, perhaps you could interview musicians who are writing songs about said subject. You'll find some informationn which may be helpful on some of the links above.

Clearly I have been insufficiently specific before. In common with an ever-growing catalogue of artists and activists including Phil Beer himself who have called on her publicly time and time again to cease and desist, I need her twisted brand of adulation like I need an extra orifice.

Yes, it's like a big dog (or flock of giant seagulls, more like), crapping all over the Sidmouth prom. Unavoidable and very unpleasant. Enthusiasm is one thing, and to be encouraged. Scattergun fawning and blinkered insistence that everyone else joins in or else is quite another. Nor does it stop with pre-pubescent fantasies about over-rated boy bands and popped-up R2 fodder but spreads to the propagation of reactionary middle-England twaddle against the entire education system, glorification of imperialistic militarism and anti-liberal outpourings.

Take Countryfile, a Sunday p.m. telly programme for the smug, middle-class, Daily Mail reading nuclear family (since an item on it forms part of this ridiculous thread). I watched the opening titles on a wonky cable feed, its transferral to the iPlayer being mercifully delayed. Over a shot of the razor-shy dishevelled ones looking considerably more so, plonked uncomfortably in an open field in a howling gale, John Craven unwittingly intoned (the vid and soundtrack being transmitted out of sync): "Down on the farm here are some sheep lining up for their annual haircut". He was never that funny on Newsround.

A bit OTT I think. Walkabout's view was politely expressed and a valid comment as I understand.

I'm not really familiar with Show of Hands but Paul Downes dropped in to our Brighton Sunday singaround sometimes a few years back and sung songs I understand were written by Steve Knightley.

If the song he sung about English people rejecting (too strong a word?) their culture was from SK. then - a bit ironic if SoH are victims of the very phenomenon.

There seems to be a weak mindedness amongst a lot of English singers right across popular music, that, if you open your mouth to sing you have to immediately adopt an American accent.

If you're an Elvis impersonator then it's understandable - but a folky style singer singing an own composition about London - that gets really pathetic!

An American observer was quite bemused.

There's a debate to be had about the cultural inferiority suffered by a lot of (the vast majority of?) English popular music singers. I'm not starting it but will happily contribute if someone else gets it going.
