Subject: Lookin' for some lyrics!
From: Rachel
Date: 10 Jul 99 - 11:22 PM

Hi! I was wondering if anyone could help me with the lyrics to some Irish songs that I can't seem to find. I live in Pittsburgh, PA....and we have an excellent local Celtic Rock band "Red Hand Paddy" that performs a bunch of great songs. I found many of them on the Mudcat webpage database. However, I was unable to find a few. I am hoping that someone can help me to attain some of the following:

1. Fisherman's Blues; performed by 'The Waterboys' (was opening song for the movie 'Waking Ned Devine'.

2. 500 Miles; performed by 'The Proclaimers' (a Scottish band)

3. Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya; (to the tune of When Johnny Comes Marching Home)

Thanks!!! Rachel B.

Hi Rachel -

Can't help with the first two, but there are two versions of Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye (or You) in the Database. Type [hardly knew] in the box on the top of the page and you can see both; one of them is probably at least close to the version you are looking for.

we did have a thread on 500 miles a while back.. but I think I found the lyrics by searching the net for Proclaimers........ I'll see if I can find it again

It is better and works quicker if you put the title of the song you are looking for in the title of your thread request.. otherwise we get heaps called "looking for lyrics" and that makes it difficult to find your request again.

OK I found the old thread but the link went to the International lyric server when it still worked... so here you go

Proclaimers Non Album Tracks

Im Gonna Be

"I'm Gonna Be (500 miles)"
by The Proclaimers
from Sunshine on Leith

When I wake up yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
When I go out yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you
If I get drunk yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I haver yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's havering to you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1,000 miles
To fall down at your door

When I'm working yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's working hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work I'll do
I'll pass almost every penny on to you
When I come home yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow old well I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's growing old with you
When I'm lonely yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's lonely without you
When I'm dreaming yes I know I'm gonna dream
Dream about the time when I'm with you

Subject: Lyr Add: FISHERMAN'S BLUES (Waterboys)
From: O'Boyle

Fisherman Blues

I wish I was a fisherman
Tumblin' on the seas
Far away from dry land
And it's bitter memories
Castin' out my sweet line
Where the band and London love
No sea you ain't bearin down on me
Save the starry sky above
With light in my head
With you in my arms...

I wish i was the brakeman
On a hurtlin fevered train
Crashin head long into the heartland
Like a cannon in the rain
With the feelin of the sleepers
And the burnin of the coal
Countin the towns flashin by
And a night that's full of soul
With light in my head
With you in my arms...

And I know I will be loosened
From the bonds that hold me fast
And the chains all around me
Will fall away at last
And on that grand and fateful day
I will take thee in my hand
I will ride on a train
I will be the fisherman
With light in my head
You in my arms...

Light in my head
You in my arms...

Light in my head
You...

With light in my head
You in my arms...

I'm looking for the lyrics to a couple songs, but I don't know the names. The first song goes something like "deedle-dumpty-deedle-dumpty-deedle-something I have been," and the other one goes "da-duummm-da-dum-doodle he wore a dum-duummm." I need the words and a hand-written manuscript. Thanks.

You have the words a little wrong, Jeri:
Diddle, diddle, dumpling, my son John,
Went to be with his stockings on,
One shoe off and one shoe on,
Diddle, diddle, dumpling, my son John.
There! I think that covers both your requests with just one verse.

how about an ad instead, Joe.

What happens when I post a request for a tune, at 10am UK time, stating the title clearly in the subject line?

15 minutes later, Alison (does she never sleep?) posts me back the words & music.

Brilliant, eh?
