Thought this worth mentioning.

CNN has an article today about search terms that are most likely to lead one to sites that download malware. Among the top terms are "music lyrics" and "free music." The full article can be found at http://www.cnn.com/2009/BUSINESS/06/10/Internet.search.terms/index.html

However, Yahoo does a good job of popping the warning

It says,

If you like to search for "music lyrics" or "free" things, you are engaging in risky cyber behavior. And "free music downloads" puts 20 percent of Web surfers in harm's way of malicious software, known as "malware."

This leaves it vague whether copying lyrics is dangerous or whether lyrics are risky because they might lure one into downloading music files.

So, can merely copying lyrics (using Ctrl+C) cause malware to be loaded onto a computer?

Years ago a computer technician told me that sound files are powerful, and that computers weren't originally conceived as machines that deal with sound. I think that's still true to a certain extent. I avoid messing with sounds on my computer.

If you're using Internet Explorer, I'd suggest getting McAfee's SiteAdvisor. It's free and places a green, yellow or red indication next to your search results with an explaination of their testing and rating for the site. If it's a green checkmark, the site appears to be safe from their testing. If it's not a green checkmark, don't go there.

The site Cowboy Lyrics is a good example of Active X - malware intrusive programing.

To see lots of warnings using the Yahoo security warnings -

"Cult of the Dead Cow - Lyrics"

I have AVG Free (is a free download). Though it is free, it has a very good reputation for protection & elimination of unwanted visitors to your hard drive. It also has a handy little feature that checks out the safety of sites before you click into them. When you do a search & the list comes up, AVG puts a symbol next to each signifying it as free of malicious "intent" or dangerous. While this may not be foolproof (what is?), I have not had a single problem since I've been using it.

Also, Mozilla Firefox is a more secure browser. It features an add-on that allows you to see if a site sends your browsing information to others & if it is encrypted or not if you should want to enter any personal info.
