I'm in possession of a 19 fret tenor (plectrum?) banjo which I want to put into CGDA tuning. Could anyone suggest the string gauges which should be used for such a set up. Thanks in advance.

As the Captain said - or you could go for a little heavier, such as 10, 16, 24, 32 - or whatever's available around that gauge.

You probably already know this, but slightly heavier (e.g. Will Fly) sounds better (IMHO), while slightly lighter (e.g. Capt. Birdseye) is easier to fret.

0.10, 0.13, 0.24 and 0.30 are the gauges I use for tenor banjo with CGDA tuning. Steve Caddick www.stevecaddick.com

Anybody using EADG tuning? I just restrung mine and I like it, much less tinney than it used to be, but i worry about the increased tension on the head. I'm using Octo mandoling strings.

Recommended guages for EADG tuning are generally - 12, 18, 28, 38, for standard scale, heavier for a short scale.

Thanks all for your comments. I'm going to use D'Addario J63's which come as .09, .16, .23 and .30. That seems to be a nice compromise on your suggestions.
