We're back at the hotel now after eating at the local Chinese Buffet (Kendall's choice!)

He was in surgery for about three hours. When his surgeon looked at the vocal cord he found that the cancer was bigger than was the case last time and had gone deeper than we had hoped. He has had to cut away a fair chunk of the left vocal cord, the photos he showed me looked pretty bad. He wants to see Kendall in 2 - 3 weeks for a check up and then will wait a few months for things to settle down before looking at what can be done from the point of view of reconstruction.

So here we are, at the bottom of another steep hill that we know we have to climb. Kendall is, of course, very disappointed at this turn and will have to take some time to get his head round this latest hit, as will I. However, we will deal with it and, basically, what will be will be.

He has recovered amazingly fast from the procedure. Within about an hour of coming round from the anasthetic he was munching on an egg salad sandwhich that I smuggled into the room. He totally charmed Marriane, his nurse, and I think she would have liked to have kept him there tonight. He, however, wanted out and back to the hotel where he could have peace and quiet, and control of the TV remote.

WE shall be heading home tomorrow and I am sure that he will be on line when we get home. Right now I'm sitting here with a styrofoam cup of Chardonnay, relaxing after the stress of a long day.

Thanks to all of you. Your messages mean a lot to us both.

We're home and settling down to decompress and take stock.We both need to come to terms with this in our own way. Kendall needs to be allowed into his 'sulking place' and left for a while in peace, and that he shall have.

We had a good drive home (well, I was driving so it was a bit white knuckle for the Cap'n.) It's nice to be back in familiar surroundings, although the rooms in the Albany hotel we use are becoming more and more familiar. It was a good thing we chose to stay there, rather than with friends in the area, as neither of us was feeling at all social last night.

We go back for the post-op in 2 - 3 weeks and, hopefully, can get more info then on how this goes forward.

I don't know whether to gripe at the results of the operation or to give thanks that modern medicine has kept you (among others) as well and sound as you are. Kendall was royally pissed off last year at Old Songs. There was a Utah Phillips memorial in which Kendall, Caroline Paton and, I believe, Priscilla Herdman were told they could not take part.

If that wasn't enough I was very badly bitten by mosquitoes - got about 50 bites and I react badly to them - it was a week before I was able to get any real sleep so, in spite of the fact that I love the festival, I just can't face those damned little pests again.

Hey, Kendall, I'm looking foward to coming up to Maine, and hope to take the scenic routes you mapped out for me.

Although I'll not have a lot of use for hypnotizing lobster down in Asheville NC (to where we're fixin' to retire next year, I hasten to add)I figure if it works on lobsters it ought to work on hillbillies, too.

I'm still rereading your book down there on the mountain house. It makes great outhouse entertainment (no offense) the stories are just the right length. How did you gauge them so perfectly?

Speaking of outhouses, did I ever tell you how my cousin Viola burnt down the outhouse up on the hill above grandPa's house in Honeyville? She was sneaking a lucky strike one Sunday afternoon when grandPa walked up on her whistling Leather Britches, she jumped up threw her cigarette down the hole and the Montgomery Ward (Sears was too expensive) fell down off her lap into the hole. Pa went in as she went out and sat down. After 5 minutes or so the catalog down in the hole caught on fire. Pa escaped with only scorched galluses on his overalls, but the outhouse burned down to reveal 30 years of accumulated, well, nevermind...

We discussed this at length last year.

There were many people who wanted to perform and not all of them could. Not everybody got to perform in fundraisers and other concerts elsewhere, and Utah was well known to folks in the Albany area who maybe didn't get any other chances to memorialize him. In retrospect, the necessarily hastily organized memorial could have been handled better, but nothing can be done about it now except bitch.

And I'm sorry that not getting priority over others counts for more than Utah's memory or your friends that will be there or the music. I would have liked to have heard Kendall and everybody who wanted to perform, but being pissed over what happened a year ago just makes you and the people who care about you miserable.

I can understand about the mosquitoes though. That's why I'm staying in a hotel this year. First time ever, since 1981.

All of that said, if Kendall's grudgifying and complaining, I figure he's getting back to 'normal' pretty quickly. Do what the doctor says and don't talk!

Jeri, you do make a lot of sense as usual, but there is more to the story. Utah and I were close friends,I was not just another fan trying to get in on the act, and I was grieving his loss. The whole thing was poorly done, it was half an hour late getting started and then it was moved to another location. They had plenty of time to include Caroline, Priscilla and me. I've been a loyal Old Songs supporter for years and it just all piled up at once.

I may change my mind at some point but I doubt it.

Listen, I apologize. I forgot a fundamental thing I learned when I worked in hospitals: people who are sick (or recovering from recent surgery) don't generally have an operational niceness filter. I however, have no excuse.

Decisions were made that wound up making Kendall feel bad. One of the people who made the decision is a Mudcatter and a friend. Kendall may choose to hold onto his resentment or may eventually let it go--I can't do anything about it. The people he holds responsible are my friends and Kendall is my friend, so I choose to not discuss it any more.

Well, funny you should mention that. I just got an e mail from my Doctor, and he said my prognosis is good but he can't be more specific until the pathology report comes back to him.

Of course, I don't know what "Good" means to him. To me it means I will get some sort of voice in time. To him it might just mean it's not going to kill me.

I think I know who that mudcatter was that made the decision at Old Songs. I've talked to him and it's ok.

I have some new designs that none of this crowd has seen yet. Sorry to be missing you and Jacqui this year I missed all the fun last year so I was hoping to see everyone.

I am suprised at all this yammering about Mosquitoes. Don't they have them in some places besides New York State? Of course few are as big as variety we have in central New York. They come out of the wet lands created by the old Erie Canal bed. Anopholese Gigantus Syphona is the only incident of cross species breeding that we know of. The mosquitoes that caused the Yellow Fever that killed so many Irish laborers in Montezuma Swamp during the digging of the canal has since crossed with the Great Blue Herron. The resulting animal is quite large. They fly in packs in the early spring and are often confused with Canada Geese when seen at a distance. There is an unconfirmed report from one of two men who were injured and a third killed while digging a canal feeder stream. The skeeter stabbed through the non critcal parts of the first two men at once only to suck the life and blood dry of the third man in the row. The other two were immediately cured of alcoholism. They claim it is because of the bite itself that the cure was affected. Some say it proves the possibility of accupunture.

Well Jeri. I expect I'll see you any way. You can always stop by the Skipper's, wave your wrist about and gloat.

As I recall, one of the early studies on alcoholism in insects was done in central New York. As Don has said, a primary food source for mosquitos in the Great Montezuma Swamp - during much of the nineteenth century - was Irish canal workers. Alcoholism in the bugs was a predictable result. Unfortunately, that means that anyone who consumes alcohol to dull the discomfort of mosquito bites is simply making her/himself a more attractive target. And that, of course, is most people in central New York.

So what we now have is a mutually-reinforcing, closed-loop cycle of human-insect alcohol dependency. Someone once told me that, that was the inspiration for Utica Club beer, the location of the F.X.Matt brewery and a number of other once-thriving breweries. The hops blight of the early 20th century up here closed many of those breweries.However, it did nothing to stop the dependency, leaving us vulnerable to Coors, Miller Light and other unspeakables.

Our unforeseen weakness has led to our being shamelessly exploited.

Mosquitos in Alaska are formidable in appearance - there are people who carry baseball bats in readiness - but in my experience, they don't mind being killed. Far from being subtle in their attacks they fly straight at you and they are so slow that you can easily bat them out of existence.

no-seeums, on the other hand, are nasty. You can't see them unless they are traveling in packs. Unfortunately they do travel in packs.

Flies work in shifts. Horseflies, deerflies, and blackflies cover the dayshift. Mosquitos cover from sunset 'till midnight and then the no-seeums take over 'till dawn. Then it starts all over again!

I was up in the Minnesota woods once, playing war games with the National Guard, when I saw two skeeters fly off with an M-48A1 tank. The guys inside managed to shoot the lead skeeter with .50 caliber machine gun but the bullets just bounced off. Poor tank crew was never seen again. The tank was found the next day, crumpled up into something about the size of a basketball.

I agree with Ebbie: many of these northwestern mosquitos boldly hover or land where they can be swatted with relative ease. I guess that's good strategy around deer and other large animals lacking hands.

Thailand boasts sneaky mosquitos which know how to get away with biting alert primates. Compared to my sociable neighbourhood mosquito, they:

- are small
- usually fly without singing
- prefer to stay below waist height, well below our eye level
- choose bottom surfaces to perch on (landing upside-down underneath tables, beneath leaves, on the back of your thigh when you're sitting in a chair)
- take to the air (silently) at the slightest movement, and don't hover about. They'll rapidly fly off to shelter if it isn't safe to land again immediately on you.
- wait a few minutes after being disturbed, before attacking again, and
- stay alert for your reaction for a while after landing, before committing themselves to probing for blood.

When attacked by one or a few of our bumbling local mosquitoes, I can often see them coming, hear them around me, and catch them in the air, or as they land and immediately begin to probe. If my first swat is a clean miss, usually the mosquito presses the attack again within a minute, while I am still alert. None of this is true of the highly-evolved Asian "stealth mosquito"!

In Maritime Canada and likey in Maine and their neighbouring coastal states, we have two kinds a skeeters that are "bad". One is woods skeeter and the other is the salt water marsh skeeter.

The woods skeeters have a habitat perfectly suited for them in New Brunswick. From the Appalacians to the coast and coastal salt water marshes and deltas is a large area of mixed boreal forest and bog country with a whack of slow moving drainage. Add a huge number of beaver dams and... damn!

In The Merrytimes, the Acadian settlers reclaimed thousands of square miles of salt water marshes along tidal rivers and estuaries with dyke systems. You do the math.

Now, yer woods skeeter is a fair size, tenacious, sneaky, and flies pretty fast. Yer salt water marsh skeeter come in small, medium and large and fly as fast as all three AND the woods skeeter combined.

Round these here parts, "fly dope" is what we call anyone who goes into these areas without a hooded fly jacket.

And... on my old camp (see the members photos) I had a screened in porch. Used to sleep in it in a LazyBoy chair in hot weather. Ya wake up with an awful feeling when the whine of the engines of thousands of skeeters on the screen get THAT loud.

I knew a guy back home in Illinois who lived in the bottomland of the Mississippi. Come summer he'd kill skeeters, general using a 20 gauge but some were to big he had to use a .45-70. He'd eat 'em as he shot 'em, and those he didn't eat he'd smoke or brine or otherwise put up for the winter. He survived mostly on skeeter and catfish.

Rap, a 12 guage with triple O shot is sufficient for all skeeters except the Northern Swampdinger. Those will only attack bull moose and grizzly bears and consider humans too small to bother with. They can be killed at long range with a .270 or 30-06 if you are a crack shot.

We were supposed to be heading to Albany, via Vermont, tomorrow but have had to put that back a week as Kendall is not well enough to travel right now.

The first lot of antibiotics that he was prescribed for the pneumonia and diverticulitis just weren't touching it. We went back to the doctor yesterday - we made an appointment for 2.00pm and then the doctor himself phoned and told him to come in at 12.00. Result - blood tests to check his white count and he has had to have two lots of antibiotics to try and do the job. The threat was that if he didn't improve he might have to go into hospital.

The good news is that his appetite is just coming back, he's eaten more so far today than I think he's had for the past three days in total and that has got to be good news. He's off for a chest x-ray this afternoon and another doctor's appointment on Thursday - his doctor is really keeping an eye on him.

It's good the doc and you all are being careful, Jacqui. The pneumonia I had was not treated aggressively enough and here I am just finally free of it, but still fighting back the side effects from steroids, etc. and some anemia which came along with all of it. The past two months have really been something. Please encourage him to be patient with himself. This stuff really saps your energy; it's important to move about a little bit to keep it on the run, but lots of rest is also necessary. Take care, Kendalldarlin'!

Right now one of Kendall's main sources of nutrition is mega milk shakes. Full fat milk, three scoops of chocolate ice cream and a banana is the norm. He can swallow these and enjoy them, so he takes in more.

I discussed this with his doctor the other day and he said OK right now - we'll deal with any sugar and fat issues once he's better. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Go get some whey protein supplement powder in the chocolate flavor. Recommended after bariactric surgery because they don't get enough protein. Kendall isn't either. If all you can get down are shakes and smoothies, then this is the way (whey) to go. You need to maximize the value of what you're drinking. Also used by many chemo and cancer patients to get the nutritional values they need.

Frankly, the best price is at Walmart but its available through health food stores and many grocery and pharmacy stores as well.

Tongue with Mustard-Horseradish Sauce Recipe

Serves 6.


INGREDIENTS
for tongue
1(3‚-lb) fresh beef tongue
1large onion, sliced
6garlic cloves, smashed
1bay leaf
1whole star anise
1/2teaspoon black peppercorns
2tablespoons salt
for sauce
1/4cup chopped shallot (1 large)
2tablespoons unsalted butter
1 1/2tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4cup heavy cream
2tablespoons whole-grain dijon mustard
1tablespoon bottled horseradish
1tablespoon chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
1tablespoon chopped fresh dill
1/2teaspoon fresh lemon juice

DIRECTIONS
Cook tongue: Rinse tongue well with cold water and place in a deep 6- to 8-quart pot. Add cold water to cover by 3 inches, then add remaining tongue ingredients. Cover pot and bring to a boil. Simmer, partially covered, until tongue isfork-tender, 2 1/2 to 3 hours.


Transfer tongue to a cutting board (reserve 1‚ cups cooking liquid) and, when cool enough to handle, peel off skin and trim any fat or gristle. Skim off fat from cooking liquid and pour liquid through a paper-towel–lined sieve into a large bowl, discarding solids. Keep tongue warm, covered.


Make sauce: Cook shallot in butter in a 2-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring frequently, until softened. Whisk in flour and cook, whisking,1 minute. Gradually whisk in reserved cooking liquid and cream, then bring to a boil, whisking.


Simmer sauce, whisking, until slightly thickened, 2 to 3 minutes. Whisk in mustard, horseradish, herbs, lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste.


Slice tongue and serve with sauce.

An old friend came to visit me today and it should have been obvious to anyone that I didn't care what he did with the shavings of a stump or half a dozen other things that dont amount to a cane hole in a cow flap. This guy is a Leo and of course, it's all about him.
When I didn't respond he suggested that I'm FRAIL!!
I will have to square him away, but I know he will never admit being wrong. I've known him for over 50 years and I've never heard him admit being wrong about anything. He often shoots from the hip with nowhere near enough information to speak about the problem at hand.When it became obvious that I was not interested, he left.

Reminded me of John Wayne in the film Hondo. His advice to a young man, "Never apologize; it's a sign of weakness." To me, it's a sign of insecurity in someone who knows he's full of shit but can't face it.He often gets up my nose, but this time he went to far.

He's the frail one and I have to figure out how to shoot him down without killing him. Any ideas?

Sometime with friends when they don't know what to say, will say things that drive us nuts. The next time tell him something like. Thanks if I wanted to be more upset and depressed I would simply turn on the TV and watch the news ... Friends make us laugh when we are sick, others don't know what to say and then spout out something that is crazy. One of mine came in after I had a pulmonary embolism and told me how I should be dead cause most don't live through them. Wow what a help, and went on and on ... another friend came in and I swear I laughed my way out of the hospital with all of his crazy stories. Needless to say I prefer the laugh cause they don't know what to do or say thinking they are helping.   Just correct him the next time with that wonderful humor you have to set him straight if he is a good friend who only gets on your nerves from time to time. Sounds like you're describing undiagnosed Asperger syndrome.

The exact cause is unknown, although research supports the likelihood of a genetic basis; brain imaging techniques have not identified a clear common pathology.[1]

There is no single treatment for Asperger syndrome, and the effectiveness of particular interventions is supported by only limited data.[1] Intervention is aimed at improving symptoms and function. The mainstay of management is behavioral therapy, focusing on specific deficits to address poor communication skills, obsessive or repetitive routines, and physical clumsiness.[6] Most individuals with AS can improve over time, but difficulties with communication, social adjustment and independent living continue into adulthood.[4] Some researchers and people with AS have advocated a shift in attitudes toward the view that AS is a difference, rather than a disability that must be treated or cured.[7]

For the past three days I have lived on ice cream and banana frappes. Loaded with sugar, yet my glucose is always around 110 to 120 in the morning. It drops during the day. My blood pressure is normal and I've stopped losing weight.
Looks to me like all my problems are food based. If I just stop eating they will all go away.

That's because you were misdiagnosed as diabetic.... 1 or 2 high sugar readings does not a disease make.

Because it's easy to work from, Kendall. Sort of like the boiling point of water in Celsius is 100 degrees. They probably took the blood sugars of about ten thousand people without diabetes and set the average at 100.

I'm not sure what Type of diabetic you are Kendal but I'm assuming that you are Type 2 and possibly on tablets

Your drop in blood sugar during the day is purely based on exercise. Your body is using more glucose (as energy) than you are taking in as food. Your overnight readings could be normal FOR YOU,

OR

If you are taking tablets - and take them first thing in the morning - their effect could be wearing off overnight. Try taking them at midday and see what happens,

If you are taking tablets there are two kinds ,,,,,,,,

One encourages the pancreas to produce more insulin
The other encourages the body to use the insulin produced more effectively. If not already on both - you may need to change.

I apologise if I am totally off beam with my assumptions but it's taken me 13 years to sort out my own needs as a diabetic so I know it's not easy.

100 is in the normal range... normal range is 70-105, depending on who you ask. The more important number to keep track of is your A1C which should be under 7.0 (again, depending on who you ask).

one of the problems with getting older, bits keep falling off. or some fool cuts them off. just make sure you don't get the wrong bit cut off, kendall, and you'll be fine!

..well, i never worked that out. when you're pregnant, suffering sleep exhaustion with a baby, or recovering from an op, "experts" suddenly flock by with instant solutions. (I hope you're not pregnant, captain).

it's impossible to out-expert an expert, but you could always roll over n play dead.. that'd challenge his expertise..
