Subject: More Clementine verses?? From: campfire Date: 11 Jul 99 - 02:36 PM Hi all - My father "collects" verses to songs; Clementine being, for some reason, among his favorites to stretch out. We have all the verses/versions in the database (including the ones we CAN'T sing in front of Mom), and several others. I was hoping that some of you had some more "obscure" verses that I can sing at their 50th wedding anniversary next week. It would be a great gift. Thanks - campfire |
Subject: RE: More Clementine verses?? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 11 Jul 99 - 04:16 PM The only one I could remember (Not in the DT) is: How I missed her, how I missed her, How I missed my Clementine, 'Till I kissed her little sister, Now I don't miss Clementine! Allison |
Subject: RE: More Clementine verses?? From: Susan of DT Date: 11 Jul 99 - 08:11 PM People also fool around with singing Clementine to different tunes. If you are interested, we can give you a list. Dick is better at this than I am. I remember Babylon is Fallen and something classical, offhand. |
Subject: RE: More Clementine verses?? From: Matthew B. Date: 12 Jul 99 - 09:43 AM I've heard about a hundred verses to "Oh Suzanna"
Here's my favorite: |
Subject: RE: More Clementine verses?? From: Matthew B. Date: 12 Jul 99 - 09:49 AM Now I know that wasn't Clementine, but I couldn't resist. And after all, you were asking about extra verses. Does anybody have the verse about the mule who kicks himself to death? |
Subject: RE: More Clementine verses?? From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 12 Jul 99 - 10:09 AM Here's the complete version of the song as printed in "The New Song Fest": MY DARLING CLEMENTINE In a cavern, in a canyon, excavating for a mine, Dwelt a miner, forty-niner, and his daughter, Clementine. (chorus) Oh my darling, oh my darling, oh my darling Clementine, You are lost and gone forever, dreadful sorry, Clementine. Light she was, and like a fairy, and her shoes were number nine, Herring boxes without topses, sandals were for Clementine. Drove she ducklings to the water every morning just at nine, Hit her foot agains a splinter, fell into the foaming brine. Ruby lips above the water, blowing bubbles soft and fine, Alas for me! I was no swimmer, so I lost my Clementine. In a churchyard near the canyon, where the myrtle doth entwine, There grow roses and other posies, fertilized by Clementine, Then the miner, forty-niner, soon began to peak and pine; Thought he oughter jine his daughter--now he's with his Clementine. In my dreams she still doth haunt me, robed in garments soaked in brine, Though in life I used to hug her, now she's dead I draw the line. Now ye Boy Scouts, heed the warning to this tragic tale of mine; Artificial respiration would have saved my Clementine. How I missed her, how I missed her, how I missed my Clementine, Til I kissed her little sister, and forgot my Clementine. --seed |
Subject: RE: More Clementine verses?? From: Barbara Date: 12 Jul 99 - 10:26 AM I've heard Clementine sung to "Guide Me O, Thou Great Jehovah", "Ode To Joy" (Beethoven) and one of Henry Clay Works songs, I forget which one. I like the first, myself. Improves two songs. We had a thread recently on scurrulous verses to Clementine. Try the Forum Search. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: More Clementine verses?? From: Matthew B. Date: 12 Jul 99 - 11:13 AM The words also fit the melody of "Ode to Joy" |
Subject: RE: More Clementine verses?? From: campfire Date: 12 Jul 99 - 07:54 PM Thanks, folks. With a little "tweaking", I can also use the tune from Clementine to sing "Puff the Magic Dragon" - which my father HATES! Did that already, though. Maybe we've already got 'em all and I'll need to MAKE UP some more! campfire |
