I have just been looking over that game of Mornington crescent and was shocked to note that even though it was made clear early on that stephen fry was "chairing", there was no "cross" refernce made to this when sugarfoot trumped with such bombast.

Mornington Crescent - Origins

The idea that the game has been played since 1567 is, I believe, untrue. As far as I know the game was developed and codified for I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue (based on a simpler game devised by Barry Cryer and others) and only subsequently were similar or similar sounding pre-existing games (such as Tun Crescent) co-opted into a spurious lineage.
The 'international incidents' ascribed to disputes arising from playing Mornington Crescent in the 19th century are nothing to do with Mornington Crescent. Many of these arose from the French game "Eclu" popular when duelling was all the rage. Some pundits have retrospectively renamed this game Mornington Crescent again to seek to substantiate the lineage. (Does anyone know the rules of Eclu? (Or how to show the accent on the E?))

I have some shocking news from Samantha who has returned from polishing Organs; apparently The darned French are trying to call a halt to all Games of "Mornigton Crescent" asserting that "Mornington Croissant" (the French version as you all know) predates and under EU conventions we must now play using the Paris Metro! I believe this is an outrageous act of French chauvinism and must be resisted at all costs.


King's Cross! Aye Caramba! There are few choices here. "Old Street" is allowed from here under Baisingthwaite's 1937 precedent I believe. Or is this viewed as "Castleing out of Check" Gee you guys are good!

Aldgate was expressly cited (in the 14th edition rule book) as a play that could only be made as a counter to Mothers' Square - and only as an emergency play, at that. The previous play was Silver Street, so it looks as though Aldgate is invalid.

I think thay Grenouille's play of Place de la Concorde was made under the misunderstanding that we were playing the French Game also known as Mornington Croissant.

For some reason this game has turned up an inordinately large number of stations remeniscent of my days at University College (from 1969). Lived near Green Lanes, travelled daily to Euston, went to Goodge Street for Dingles Folk Club, moved to Kentish Town and oft went to Camden Town for CSH. Danced in Paternoster Square at St Pauls, went out with someone who lived near Holborn and then got a job in Cockfosters. In all that time I don't think I once used Mornington Crescent and certainly didn't venture south of the river in civilised hours.

It struck me that we could all do with something to take our minds off toughing MPs, whelk-eyed fascists and swine flu and we haven't had a game of Mornington Crescent for a while.

As ISIHAC is back on tonight, let's have a bash!

We'll play using Benn's Revised and Amended Rules (Fourteeth Edition), don't double-back on the diagonals and if we could avoid whiffling and nadgering on this first game it'll make it easier for all.
