Although I think "See ol Death" is "Since" ol Death...has come along. Sounds like that to me at least. "My mother had to part" sounds about right. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Can See Everybody's Mother From: Jim Dixon Date: 19 Jun 09 - 03:49 PM According to this pdf file from a Dutch web site, the line is "My mother had to part" – but I wouldn't put too much faith in it; the site has a couple of other transcription errors (mondegreens). |
Subject: Lyr Req: I Can See Everybody's Mother From: Yoda2U Date: 16 Jun 09 - 02:08 PM Hello! I am stuck again. It's been 2 hours, a missed mid-morning breakfast ("just one more site and I'll eat"), umpteen websites, and I have not been able to track down the lyrics to "I Can See Everybody's Mother (but My Own)." It's not in Mudcat, either. OOOOh, the frustration of all those ads & false leads!!!! [big frowny face] ;o) Anyway--it was the song that put the Blind Boys of Alabama on the map. I believe it is from 1947. (Hard to believe that their first hit's lyrics are so hard/impossible to find!) Here's what I've been able to hear so far: I can see everybody's mother Lord, I can't see mine I can see everybody's mother Lord, I can't see mine Whoa yeah Yea yea See ol death Has come along Takin my darling mother Takin my mother on home Chorus I wonder, can I get a witness I remember kneelin' down by my mother's side I was nothin but a little boy when my mother died but I got to thinking That I was losin I was losin my only friend Whoa have mercy Almost Almost broke my heart To see my darlin mother My mother at the __________ Chorus Where you see the blank is the only word I can't figure out. (That's right--I've been trying to track down just ONE word!) So, if anyone has the magic word, I'd be most obliged. In fact, I'll bet a whole lot of people would be happy to be able to know these lyrics. (How do lyrics get posted in DigiTrad?) (Max was right about losing free time once you get hooked on lyric searching!) |
