Blue clicky to MSNBC story

TACOMA, Wash. - Bob Bogle, lead guitarist and co-founder of the rock band The Ventures, known for 1960s instrumental hits like "Walk, Don't Run," has died at age 75.

Don Wilson, the band's other co-founder, tells The News Tribune of Tacoma, Wash., that Bogle became ill over the weekend and died Sunday.

The band sold millions of albums and heavily influenced other rock guitarists. It was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. The hall's Web site hailed The Ventures as "the most successful instrumental combo in rock and roll history."

I did too, Ron. I still have a couple of their albums, though I doubt they are in playable condition anymore.

Thanks for the link, bobad. I surfed around and found "Wipe Out" also.

Brings back a lot of memories. We had weekly school parties in the gym on Friday nights during the school year (Monthly during the summer.) The boys only danced on the slow songs, and we girls "strutted our stuff" on the fast. I'm getting visual images of the gym, the lighting, and dancing to the Ventures, their songs so long and fast that it was an ordeal to last through them. Hot summer nights, big fans blowing air across the dance floor, and gaggles of girls in circles, dancing with each other, but for the boys lined up along the walls.

I had completely forgotten this, but little sister played rythm guitar in a little rock and roll band when we were in high school. However, the drummer couldn't play "Wipe Out", so she played the drums for that number. (Not that she held a candle to Mel Taylor.)

Rest in peace, Mr. Bogle and thank you for the memories.

"WDR"--first rock song I ever learned. THEY were IT! It's always sad when a legend passes on.

"Walk Don't Run" was hugely influential. I first heard it (in the UK) by the John Barry Seven (yes, that John Barry), but the Ventures was always the authentic sound to me.

"Wipe Out" I knew as the version by the Surfaris.

Both numbers were always great to play live for dancing.

Ah, memories...

A great band, and the loss of Bob is another bad day for rock'n'roll. Can never forget their sound - my favourite being "No Trespassing". Thanks for all you did for us baby boomers Bob, and now rest in peace.

I really liked the Ventures version of "Pipeline" It was a tad faster than "The Chantays" and more exciting. RIP Bob, thanks for the inspiration.

If I ever hear that drum beat and those rhythm chords I'm back on Cleethorpes Prom' early sixties. I always preferred 'Lullaby of the Leaves' myself. RIP Mr. Bogle.

Bob also wrote the theme for the TV show "Hawaii 5-O." So I learned on the NBC Nightly News last night. I assume he recorded it with the Ventures ~ sure sounds like it ~ but can't say for sure.

RIP Bob

I liked the Ventures, but am sorry to say that I always thought "Walk Don't Run" by John Barry was the best version and bought that single.

I was a huge Ventures fan. I own quite a few of their albums. I particularly like their "In Concert" album, with its medley of Walk, Don't Run, Perfidia, and Lullaby of the Leaves, and its extended version of Caravan (complete with drum solo!)

Rest in Peace, Bob.

Don

I'm with Jim on Cleethorpes memories of the ventures - but wasn't it the Winter Gardens? Certainly the Crickets played the WGs in '64.

Perfidia was pretty good too.

HELLO, Sir Roger, Do you mean me and Cleethorpes? My memories are og the jukebox in The Humber arcade on the prom' Walk Don't Run and that orangey red Top Rank label.
A sort of pseudo Crickets played at the Cafe Dansant, Cleethorpes in 1964. They had Jerry Allison on drums, as far as I recall and aBuddy Holly look-alike singing!
ATB from Charlie.
